Abstract

We examine how social capital operates as a relational infrastructure shaping community empowerment within rural development programs through a multi-site qualitative case study grounded in interviews, focus groups, and observations. Findings show that empowerment emerges from dense interactional networks that connect bonding, bridging, and linking ties, enabling communities to negotiate power, institutional access, and collective learning. Gendered and livelihood-based networks function as critical arenas where trust and reciprocity are translated into durable participatory practices, while supportive governance arrangements stabilize these relational gains across time. Comparative analysis demonstrates that sustainable empowerment depends on balancing internal cohesion with external partnerships and institutional memory, producing adaptive capacities resilient to social and administrative change. The study advances a sociological model that conceptualizes social capital as a dynamic process linking interaction, power, and sustainability in rural contexts, and offers methodological insights for evaluating empowerment beyond output-centered metrics. By foregrounding relational mechanisms, the research clarifies how community agency is continuously reproduced through negotiated networks that integrate institutional credibility with everyday cooperation, informing more inclusive and durable

Abstract

Digital Farming Advisory Platforms (DFAPs) are posited to help Indonesian smallholders, but their real-world adoption and economic efficacy are unverified. A significant gap exists between the technology’s promise and its practical implementation. This study sought to: (1) empirically quantify DFAP adoption rates, (2) rigorously evaluate their economic impact on farm yield and net income, and (3) identify key drivers of adoption. A cross-sectional survey (N=1,240) was conducted in three Indonesian provinces. We employed logistic regression to identify adoption predictors and Propensity The adoption rate was low (25.0%), with a high rejection rate (33.5%). Digital literacy and education were the strongest predictors. The PSM analysis confirmed that adoption yields significant economic benefits, including a 14.2% increase in crop yield and higher net income (p < .01). The findings present a critical paradox: DFAPs are economically effective, but benefits are captured only by a digitally literate “farmer elite.” This “digital divide” mandates a policy shift from technology-centric investment to human-centric interventions focused on digital literacy.

Abstract

Jembrana disease is an infectious disease that causes significant economic losses in Bali cattle farming. Muara Papalik District in West Tanjung Jabung Regency has a large Bali cattle population; therefore, farmers' understanding of disease prevention measures is crucial for maintaining livestock productivity. This study aimed to identify farmer characteristics and analyze the factors influencing their perceptions regarding Jembrana disease prevention. Data were collected via a questionnaire survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. The results showed that the majority of farmers had an elementary school education (38.2%), 2–5 years of farming experience (61.8%), and a herd size of 5–10 cattle (61.8%). Farmers' knowledge of Jembrana disease was low; 50% were unfamiliar with the disease, and 79.4% had never attended extension programs. Farmers' perceptions regarding Jembrana disease prevention were rated as reasonably good, with an average score of 60.16%. Regression analysis yielded an R² value of 0.657, revealing that farming experience (Sig = 0.011) and knowledge level (Sig = 0.001) significantly influenced farmers' perceptions. In conclusion, greater farming experience and higher levels of knowledge correlate with more positive perceptions regarding Jembrana disease prevention. Enhancing farmer capacity through continuous education and extension services is necessary to strengthen awareness and the implementation of preventive measures in the field.
