Abstract

Translating the Qur’an into other languages is an urgent task following the spread of Islam not only to Arabic-speaking countries but also all over the world including Indonesia. The purpose of this article is to examine the process of the Qur’anic translation in the Sundanese Qur’anic translation and tafsir. This article investigates various preferred words choices by ulama in four Sundanese Translation and Tafsir namely: Qur’an Miwah Terjemah Dina Basa Sunda (QMTDBS, hereafter) published by the team members of West Java Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2005; 2) Tafsir Al Qur’an Basa Sunda (TQBS, hereafter), also published by West Java Ministry of Religious Affairs in 1981, 3) Tafsir Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun (TASL, hereafter); and 4) Roudhatul Irfan (RI, hereafter) written by K.H. Ahmad Sanoesi. Special attention is directed to investigating three aspects namely: 1) The procedure of using plural forms; 2) The usage of language levels; and 3) The preference of word choices for the translation of the same Arabic word. This research employs a qualitative method with content analysis of the text of Sundanese tafsir from different eras to accommodate the use of the Sundanese language in the changing society. The philological analysis also utilizes to scrutinize different word–by–word translations in these three texts. This research shows that: (1) There are differences in using plural forms from the source language into the targeted language in these Sundanese tafsir. For QMTDBS, they mostly eschewed the plural structure systematized in the Sundanese language. To our analysis, the shifting usage of the first aspect (1-plural) related to formulating the simple translation (uncomplicated) by eliminating one of the plural forms. The second aspect (2- language level) from coarse/refined to more refine language is associated with the changing society in Sundanese. The Qur’an which is positioned as sacred text represented high society and therefore uses more refined language. The third category (3) of various dictions usage is connected to territorial and context conventions which certainly influence the meaning-making of the translation process. Some Sundanese-translated words may not represent the equivalent meaning of the source language and it becomes one of the limitations in the translation process.

Abstract

This paper discusses how the Indonesian Sunni Muslim leader Abdurrahman Wahid and the Iranian Shiite Muslim leader Ayatollah Khomeini responded to the debate about the relationship between Islam and the state. Their responses impacted on the struggle of Indonesian and Iranian Muslims in considering the ideological basis of Indonesian and Iranian states. On the one hand, Wahid with his educational and social background and Indonesian political context rejected the concept of an Islamic state. He did not agree with the formalization of Islamic sharia. To implement his idea, he promoted the idea of Pribumisasi Islam. For Wahid, islamization was not arabization. Khomeini, on the other hand, believed that Islam is a religion that has complete laws and way of life including social rules. According to Khomeini, to effectively implement these rules, Muslims need to have executive power. In Khomeini’s view, when the Quran calls for Muslims to obey Allah, the messenger, and ulil amri, this means that Allah instructs Muslims to create an Islamic state. To realise his views, Khomeini proposed the doctrine of Velayat-e al Faqeeh. Thus, different religious-political contexts of these two leaders contributed to their different responses to the relationship between Islam and the state.

Abstract

Kinship Care is a form of childcare by close relatives such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, or siblings when biological parents cannot fulfill their parenting responsibilities. In Indonesia, Kinship Care often arises in the context of poverty, migration, parental death, or the inability of parents to care for their children for various reasons, including death, illness, or legal issues. This research is a desk study using Wilhelm Dilthey's hermeneutic analysis method to explore three aspects, namely Erlebnis (experience), Ausdruck (expression), and Verstehen (understanding), in Surah Ali 'Imran verses 37 and 44. The results of this study conclude that in the Kinship Care pattern, Zakariya has four patterns in caring for Maryam, security and support, space for children, financial security, dialogue and appreciation for children. Then, suggestions for further research related to Kinship Care studies to explore broader patterns using different hermeneutical theories and different figures in the Qur'an can also be taken in relevance to different contexts so that they can reach ideal patterns for Kinship Care studies.

Abstract

This study was conducted to try to understand Hasan Hanafi's hermeneutic thinking in the context of the interpretation of the Qur'an. Given that the Qur'an is a holy book that deserves to be applied throughout all times and in various places. There are various methods that can be used to interpret the Qur'an. One of them is the hermeneutic approach. Not a few hermeneutic figures who offer various concepts, from orientalists to Muslim scholars themselves. However, the interpretation of the Qur'an with hermeneutics that is relevant to the slogan above is an interpretation that can provide solutions to the problems of the people, especially Muslims. Among the theories that are appropriate and in line with these interests are the hermeneutics offered by Hanafi, namely the emancipatory critical hermeneutics. This model of hermeneutics is a science that determines the relationship between consciousness (critical attitude) and its object, namely the holy book. It has a lasting stage called the historical consciousness phase, the eiditic phase of consciousness, and the practical phase of consciousness. Hermeneutics is a science that can explain God's revelation from letters to reality, from logical to practical, from words to the world, and from God's thoughts into real life.

Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of non-use of technology remains relatively underexplored. In West Java, certain religious communities choose not to use specific technologies, particularly within the Islamic anti-speaker group known as the Aspek (anti-speaker) community. This study aims to analyze the piety of Muslim members of the Aspek community in rejecting the use of loudspeaker technology. Data were collected through fieldwork, including unstructured interviews with leaders and members of the Aspek community, as well as direct observation. The data were analyzed using the multilevel model of resistance to information technology implementation as the theoretical framework. The findings reveal that the Aspek community’s rejection of loudspeakers is influenced by user-related factors, particularly religious beliefs and interpretations, as well as technology-related factors. These two aspects shape a form of communal technological non-use deeply rooted in cultural and spiritual values.

Abstract

I'jaz is the ability to subdue and show himself above others. When this term was applied to the Qur'an, the holy book brought by the Prophet was able to subdue all the writings that ever existed, while also crowning the Qur'an as a miracle as well as the most noble and undeniable book. The miracles of the Qur'an cannot be matched. This is manifested in aspects of the beauty of language, the stories contained in it, in addition to monotheism, the rules of the Shari'a, and so on, as well as scientific information that is extraordinarily complete when examined in depth. To appreciate the miracles of the Qur'an, every Muslim should fulfill the rights of the Qur'an by reading, memorizing, studying, analyzing and applying it in daily life as a guide for those who are pious.
