Abstract

This paper discusses the participation of educational institution, Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE) in promoting and campaigning moderate and tolerance Islam in Adelaide, Australia. The article also attempts to close reading of the discourse of moderate Islam itself to answer fundamental questions about what moderate Islam is, what CITE attempts to do, can do, and cannot be expected to do. This study is essential to fill the gap in the dearth literature discussing the role of educational institution in campaigning moderate Islam in Australia. This study was based on observation and interviews conducted with main figures of CITE and the staff members or the supporters of the group who actively involved in their activities in Adelaide, Australia. The result of the study shows that as an educational institution, CITE has significant roles in promoting moderate Islam and straightening negative image of Islam in the West.

Abstract

Instructional Methods and Curriculum of Darus Sunnah as an International Hadith InstitutionThis paper delves into "Darus Sunnah as an International Hadith Institution.” This research was conducted to prove that Darus Sunnah is an Islamic boarding schoolexisting at the international level.This research also showed that the educational program of Darus Sunnah used four methods, namely: mudhākarah, halaqah fajriyyah, munazhzhamah, and istijmām.The learning method applied in Darus Sunnah wasstudent-centered, wherein students were required to discuss actively with the mudarris as facilitators. The methods used in this Islamic boarding school dailycomprised: bandongan, sorogan, tahfizh of hadith, tahfizh of Qur’an, and tahfizh of yellow books. The students of Darus Sunnah were also directed to conduct a community service program (PPM) as an ideal of PPM model. This research proved that Darus Sunnah is an international hadith institution. This is proven by the following facts: 1. Darus Sunnah Islamic Boarding School has got a branch in Malaysia since 2012, located in al-Sakinah Eco Resort Kampung Janda Baik, Negeri Pahang, Malaysia. 2. Darus Sunnah Islamic Boarding School has sent dā'i to foreign countries, such as America and Malaysia. 3. The sending of students to Egypt is one proof that Darus Sunnah is an international boarding school. The program to send students to Egypt is in collaboration with the Lido Pesantren 4. Darus Sunnah Islamic boarding school also frequently receives international students especially students who study around Darus Sunnah Islamic boarding school

Abstract

Local Context in Interpreting Tolerance Verses in the Book of Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish ShihabThe search for the idea of tolerance in the interpretation of the Qur'an which is popular in Indonesia is an important thing to do, given the condition of the pluralistic Indonesian nation. This study explores the local context of Indonesian textually in the interpretation of al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab. This study was conducted through a textual analysis of the interpretation. The focus of this study is on the interpretation of the verses of tolerance in Tafsir Al-Mishbah, especially on five things: the interaction of believers and non-believers, coercion in religion, living together with people of different religions, the existence of people of the book [Ahl al-Kitab], and Islam as a mercy to the universe. This study finds that the local Indonesian context contained in this interpretation is in the translation and interpretation written in Indonesian. Although it is aimed at Muslims in general, it is clear that Muslims in Indonesia are part of the target. In the context of pluralism, the writing of this commentary is also intended to ground the Qur'an to a pluralistic society

Abstract

The understanding on Quran requires an approach that is oriented toward inclusiveness. Many Quran interpretation scholars who understand the Quran in a way that leads to antagonistic attitudes and acts of violence. There is a need to propose alternative Quran Interpretation Learning using an integrative approach. This paper aims to investigate the design of an integrated emancipatory Quran interpretation learning at Master Program for Arabic Language Education of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. This research is qualitative using descriptive methods. It applied observation, interviews, and documentation to collect the data. Using scientific integrative approach, this study found that emancipatory Quran learning interpretation was designed into three levels: objectives, process and learning material.

Abstract

Tafsir is one of the essences of Islamic orthodoxy and its authenticity is always guarded. Therefore, a drastic change is avoided in the studies of tafsir especially in pesantren, because pesantren is the institution that most persistent in guarding the Islamic orthodoxy in Indonesia. Not surprisingly, this research that was conducted in 2015 foundssimilarity to what has been reported by Berg in the nineteenth century and by Bruinessen and other researchers in the twentieth century. This article is the report of field research conducted at six pesantren in West Java namely: Pesantren al-Jawami Bandung, Pesantren al-Wafa Bandung, Pesantren al-Masthuriyah Sukabumi, Pesantren Darusalam Ciamis, Pesantren Cipasung Tasikmalaya and Pesantren Buntet Cirebon. This research focus on the study of tafsir books in these pesantren. This research concluded that changes do exist and occur in the study of tafsir in these pesantren, but extremely slow. The study of tafsir is still considered a second choice in pesantren compare to the study of fiqh and Arabic language. The most popular tafsir studied in these pesantren is Tafsir Jalalayn. There are also pesantren where other tafsir were studied like Tafsir al- Manar and Tafsir al-Maraghy, but very rare; that is in pesantren oriented to modernity. In addition, the traditional method of studying tafsir is still dominant in this pesantren, called bandongan where the Kyai (leader of pesantren) annotate the text word by word in front of the students (santri).

Abstract

Godly servants in the view of the majority of Indonesian people are good people who diligently worship in their daily lives. This study focuses on the role of pious servants in world life. The object of study is the word 'Abdun and S}a>lih which means servant and a good person, besides that there is the word ‘Iba>diya S}a>lihu>n, ‘iba>dina> S}a>lihu>n, and ‘Iba>dika S}a>lihu>n which refers to the pious servant. This study focuses on the sign of Qur’anic language, using semantic analysis. This study shows that pious servants in the Qur’an are those who do good with three main features of worshiping Allah, repent and make improvements in the world. There are characteristic of pious servants that are sacrificing his soul for his good pleasure, fearing Allah, believing, following the teachings of Islam, worshiping, surrendering to Allah, not giving up hope in Allah, not arrogant, saying good things, trusting and asking for help only to him, doing good in the world, not worrying, or grieving, giving alms, knowing, giving thanks for all the blessings, repenting, always praying, spending some of his income it can be grouped into social roles as leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, workers and institutional activists self-subsistent.

Abstract

Abstract: This study discusses the history of fatwas on Muslim-Non-Muslim relations issued by the Bahthul Masa'il Institute (LBM) of Nahdlatul Ulama from 1926 to 2019. This research is a type of qualitative research focused on studying LBM written materials. The perspective used is the Study of Religion with a theoretical analysis from Joachim Wach regarding the forms of expression of religious experience, especially in the sociological form. This study finds that, historically, NU issued fatwas by considering such sociological aspects that taghayyur (law change) method is used in law enforcement. By adhering to this principle, NU has formulated fatwas to maintain Muslim-non-Muslim relations under the umbrella of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. In this regard, NU argues that non-Muslims in Indonesia cannot be categorized in terms of the infidel in the nation-state because non-Muslim citizens in the nation-state context are not second-class citizens as contained in the concept of infidel with various types. The implication is the increasing quality of inter-religious relations that are increasingly harmonious in a plural society.الملخص :تناقش هذه الدراسة تاريخ الفتاوى حول العلاقات بين المسلمين وغير المسلمين الصادرة عن معهد بهتول المسائل (LBM)  لتابع لنهضة العلماء من عام  1926 إلى عام  2019. هذا البحث هو نوع من البحث النوعي الذي يركز على دراسة المواد المكتوبة من قبل  LBM. المنظور المستخدم هو دراسة الدين مع تحليل نظري من Joachim Wachفيما يتعلق بأشكال التعبير عن التجربة الدينية ، وخاصة في الشكل الاجتماعي. توصلت هذه الدراسة إلى أنه تاريخياً ، أصدرت جامعة النيل فتاوى من خلال النظر في الجوانب الاجتماعية ، وبالتالي استخدام طريقة التغايور )تغيير القانون  (في إنفاذ القانون. بالالتزام بهذا المبدأ ، قامت NU بصياغة فتاوى للحفاظ على العلاقات بين المسلمين وغير المسلمين تحت مظلة الدولة الموحدة لجمهورية إندونيسيا. في هذا الصدد ، يجادل NU بأنه لا يمكن تصنيف غير المسلمين في إندونيسيا من حيث الكفار في الدولة القومية لأن المواطنين غير المسلمين في سياق الدولة القومية ليسوا مواطنين من الدرجة الثانية كما هو وارد في مفهوم الكفر. بأنواع مختلفة. المعنى الضمني هو الجودة المتزايدة للعلاقات بين الأديان التي تزداد انسجامًا في مجتمع تعددي.Abstrak: Penelitian ini membahas riwayat fatwa hubungan Muslim-Non-Muslim yang dikeluarkan oleh Lembaga Bahthul Masa'il (LBM) Nahdlatul Ulama dari tahun 1926 hingga 2019. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian kualitatif yang difokuskan untuk mengkaji bahan tertulis LBM. Perspektif yang digunakan adalah kajian agama dengan analisis teori dari Joachim Wach mengenai bentuk-bentuk ekspresi pengalaman beragama, terutama dalam bentuk sosiologis. Studi ini menemukan bahwa dalam sejarahnya, NU mengeluarkan fatwa dengan mempertimbangkan aspek sosiologis, sehingga memakai metode taghayyur (perubahan hukum) dalam penegakan hukum. Dengan berpegang pada prinsip ini, NU telah merumuskan fatwa-fatwa untuk menjaga hubungan Muslim-non-Muslim di bawah payung Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia. Dalam kaitan ini, NU berpendapat bahwa non-Muslim di Indonesia tidak dapat dikategorikan dalam istilah kafir dalam negara-bangsa karena warga negara non-Muslim dalam konteks negara-bangsa bukanlah warga kelas dua sebagaimana termuat dalam konsep kafir dengan berbagai jenisnya. Implikasinya adalah meningkatnya kualitas hubungan antar umat beragama yang semakin harmonis di masyarakat plural.

Abstract

Quran Translation by the Ministry of Religious Affairs entitled “Al-Qur’an dan Terjemahannya” which has been improved and refined for the third time shows the involvement of the state in providing Quran translation for Muslims. This article aims to show how politics and state policies in the translation of Quran in Indonesia as the power-knowledge, and how this power-knowledge is related to other power-knowledge. By analyzing all edition of “Al-Qur’an dan Terjemahannya” published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs as well as a set of interviews, this article concluded that Quran translation by the Ministry of Religious Affairs is an authoritative strategy of the state in accommodating Muslims interest to comprehend their holy Quran. At the same time, through this translation, the interest of the state in maintaining its stability of power is accommodated as well. The state power-knowledge in the form of Quran translation by the Ministry of Religious Affairs is not only focused on the state (The Ministry of Religious Affairs), but also related to other translation of Quran as the power-knowledge in the society.

Abstract

Various approaches are employed by exegetes to understand the Qur’an. One of those approaches is the linguistic approach. One of tafsīr utilises the linguistic approach is Ḥāshiahal-Ṣāwī 'Alā Tafsīr al-Jalālain. This article investigates the characteristics and the unique attribution of Ḥāshiah al-Ṣāwī in its interpretation of the Qur’an, especially in the language rules usage through his examples in explaining the verses. This study employs a qualitative method to the data gathered from literature (library research) descriptively. The Data analysis technique used the Seidel model through several stages of the process, namely identifying the results of data collection through data clarification, license, analysis, and data categorization. This research shows that Ḥāshiah al-Ṣāwī 'Alā Tafsīr al-Jalālain is an essential and comprehensive interpretation using a linguistic approach. Al-Ṣāwī equipped his interpretation by explaining Nahwu (syntax), Ṣaraf (morphology), and the language rules application. He even quoting Alfiyyah Ibn Mālik, complete with its syi'ir which are very rare to do by other commentators to make his tafsīr more comprehensive. Several characteristics in Ḥāshiah al-Ṣāwī used a linguistic approach to the Qur’an utilizing the Arabic principle of mubtadi (basic), especially in the ‘Irāb (inflection) discussion. In this study, Ḥāshiah al-Ṣāwī 'Alā Tafsīr al-Jalālain can be categorized as an independent tafsīr that differ from tafsīr Al-Jalālain. Al-al-Ṣāwī not only explaining in detail tafsīr Jalalain but also criticizing and comparing it.

Abstract

Pada paruh pertama abad ke-20 karya-karya tafsir mulai bermunculan dan berkembang pesat di Nusantara. Hal ini merupakan fenomena baru, karena pada abad-abad sebelumnya, karya-karya tafsir Nusantara sangat jarang ditemukan.Ditambah kondisi Indonesia pada masa sebelum masa kemerdekaan berada dalam keadaan yang cukup sulit dan rumit. Kitab tafsir yang ditulis oleh para mufasir Indonesia saat itu, berupaya membangkitkan semangat bangsa untuk lepas dari penderitaan walaupun hanya dengan pernyataan yang samar-samar. Penelitian ini memfokuskan diri pada masalah perkembangan tafsir di Indonesia dari tahun 1900-1945, dilihat dari karakteristiknya yang meliputi aspek metode, sumber dan corak penafsiran, sebagaimana terlihat pada karya-karya tafsir yang lahir pada masa itu. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian studi kepustakaan atas empat karya tafsir dari tahun 1900-1945 sebagai sumber data primer yaitu; Tafsir Al-Qurān Karīm, Tafsir Al-Furqan, Tafsir Malja Al-Thalibin, dan Tamsiyah Al-Muslimin. Penelitian ini lebih bersifat deskriptif-analitis dengan menggunakan pendekatan historis. Dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan, ditemukan data-data sebagai berikut: untuk metode penafsiran yang terdapat pada ketiga tafsir ini yaitu, tafsir Al-Qurān Karīm, tafsir Al-Furqan, dan tafsir Malja Al-Thalibinmenggunakan metode Ijmāli. Sedangkan untuk  tafsir Tamsyiah Al-Muslimin ialah Tahlīli. Sumber penafsiran pada keempat tafsir tersebut masing-masing dari karya tersebut semua sumbernya ialah bil ra’yi.Untuk corak tafsir yang terdapat pada kedua tafsir ini yaitu tafsir Al-Qurān Karīm, dan Tamsyiah Al-Muslimin adalah corak adab al-ijtim’i.Pada tafsir Al-Furqān adalah corak lughawi. Adapun pada tafsir Malja Al-Thalibin tidak ada corak yang dominan, adakalanya Sanusi menafsirkan ayat yang berhubungan dengan masalah fiqih, kalam, atau sufi,ini menunjukan bahwa sifat coraknya adalah umum. Dengan demikian, dapat diambil kesimpulan bahwa pada keempat tafsir ini karena berada pada masa pra kemerdekaan, tentu saja di dalam penafsirannya ada sedikitnya ayat-ayat yang menyentuh mengenai motivasi pada semangat perjuangan seperti misal contoh yang ada pada ayat 85 surah Al-Baqarah dan ayat 71 surah Al-Taubah, yang membuktikan bahwa penulisan karya tafsir pada masa ini ada kaitannya dengan persoalan sosio-politik yang terjadi dan bahkan dapat menjurus kepada jawaban-jawaban dari masalah yang terjadi, yang merupakan suatu ciri khas dari karya-karya tafsir masa itu.
