Abstract

Belanti village used to be land before the entry of the palm oil company, which caused the canalization to form a lake or swamp. The company's canalization blocked the flow of a natural river in Ulak Pati, Pampangan sub-district, preventing water from flowing and causing it to pool in what was once open land. The result of this canalization caused changes to the ecosystem in the village of Rawa Belanti, which had an impact on the growth factors of aquatic organisms that formed along with the formation of the lake/swamp. This study focuses on collecting data and information about the growth of cork fish that are found in many communities in rawa belanti through the sampling method. The study was conducted for 4 months with sampling intervals every 10 days. Calculation of length-weight and condition factor used all cork fish caught during the sampling.The growth factors assessed were the correlation between length and weight, and the condition factor of the gourami fish caught in the swamp. Based on the results of the study, the correlation of length and weight growth is negative allometric, which means that weight growth is slower than the growth of fish length. Assessment of the condition factor of cork fish shows an average value of 1, which means that the fish is in good body condition. Water quality assessment was also conducted in order to support growth data.

Abstract

Environmental factors play an important role in the growth and survival of fish, both directly and indirectly. This role is not limited to determining the success of fish growth in terms of length and weight; fish behavior, feeding patterns, and metabolism are also affected. Photoperiod itself is defined as the length of time of light and dark exposure. This study aims to evaluate the effect of photoperiodism on the growth rate and physiological response of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The study was conducted in Gandus District, Palembang City. Data and analysis were performed using a completely randomized design (CRD) with several parameters such as growth rate, weight gain, survival rate, and behavior of red tilapia observed qualitatively in response to treatment with varying light exposure times. The treatments given were 3 variations of light and dark exposure and 5 repetitions with variations P1: 20 hours of light: 4 hours of dark (20T; 4G) P2: 16 hours of light: 8 hours of dark (16T; 8G), and P3: 12 hours light : 12 hours dark (12T; 12G). The analysis results showed that red tilapia had a positive growth response, characterized by an increase in fish length and weight, caused by increased metabolism due to an increase in feed consumption rate. Fish behavior changed compared to the control group due to physiological stress caused by prolonged exposure to light.

Abstract

This community service initiative seeks to enhance the institutional capacity and professionalism of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) via a strategic methodology that includes initial assessment, interactive workshops, intense mentoring, and facilitation of business partnership execution. The activities were conducted in eight villages within Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. The employed methodologies encompassed participative analyses of BUMDes profiles, training in the formulation of work plans and business ideas, and the enhancement of branding strategies. The findings indicated that all BUMDes successfully developed strategic documents, including firm profiles, collaboration proposals, and SWOT analyses. Five BUMDes have initiated preliminary collaborations with neighboring enterprises. The primary obstacles encountered consist of insufficient human resource capability, restricted technological utilization, and scant managerial expertise. This program enhances both technical and administrative capabilities while fostering the establishment of sustainable collaborative networks between villages and the corporate sector. Additional proposals encompass training in corporate digitization, mentoring in negotiation, and the establishment of a more flexible organizational structure. This program aims to serve as a prototype for village empowerment through strategic partnerships and enhanced institutional capacity, which may be replicated in other locations.

Abstract

One of the freshwater fish that has been successfully cultivated by the people of Macang Sakti village is tilapia. However, the high cultivation is not in line with its marketing, which is still relatively low. In addition, high feed costs are also an obstacle to raising tilapia. Therefore, education on innovation in processing tilapia seeds in the form of nutritious food is very necessary to be provided to the community by empowering women's groups as business actors. This effort also aims to increase family economic income. The location of community service was carried out in Macang Sakti Village, Sanga Desa District, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. The methods used were survey methods, counseling, discussion and demonstration (practice) of processing tilapia seeds into crispy babyfish. The implementation of the activity was attended by more than 16 participants from among housewives with great enthusiasm. The results of this Community Service show that community service activities can increase participants' knowledge and skills about nutrition and processing tilapia seeds into healthy snacks (crispy babyfish) and motivate them to actively consume fish.

Abstract

Forest and land fires are recurring environmental problems in Musi Banyuasin Regency, particularly in areas dominated by forest landscapes and peatlands. This community engagement activity aimed to enhance community understanding and awareness of forest and land fire prevention and management through an educational and participatory socialization approach. The activity was conducted in Muara Merang Village, Bayung Lencir Subdistrict, and Pangkalan Bulian Village, Batanghari Leko Subdistrict, involving 45 participants representing village governments, Fire Care Community groups, farmer and forest farmer groups, youth organizations, and women’s groups. The implementation stages included an initial assessment and site selection, coordination with village stakeholders, pre-test administration, delivery of conceptual and technical materials, participatory discussions, and evaluation through post-test. The results indicate that the community’s initial understanding of forest and land fires was relatively adequate, with an average pre-test score of 6.2, although the understanding remained partial. After the socialization activity, participants’ understanding increased significantly, as reflected by an average post-test score of 9.25. Participatory discussions further revealed community needs for institutional strengthening, more intensive training, adequate equipment support, and sustainable land management alternatives without burning practices. These findings highlight the importance of community-based approaches as an initial step in strengthening local preparedness and sustainable forest and land fire prevention at the village level.

Abstract

Abstrak  Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan akses masyarakat Muara Enggelam terhadap air layak konsumsi melalui pendampingan implementasi teknologi pengolahan air gambut berbasis karakterisasi laboratorium. Metode yang digunakan adalah Participatory Action Research dengan empat tahapan: sosialisasi, pelatihan, implementasi teknologi, dan monitoring dampak. Teknologi yang dikembangkan mengintegrasikan koagulasi-flokulasi (tawas 15–30 mg/L), netralisasi pH (KOH), sedimentasi, aerasi menara, filtrasi bertingkat (pasir–kerikil–silika–resin penukar ion IRA-958), dan disinfeksi UV. Hasil menunjukkan penurunan signifikan parameter kualitas air: kekeruhan dari 21,8–65,9 menjadi 0,93 NTU (<3 baku mutu), besi (Fe) dari 0,2–0,4 menjadi 0,07 mg/L (<0,2 mg/L), dan mangan (Mn) <0,02 menjadi 0,02 mg/L (<0,1 mg/L). Meskipun pH air olahan masih asam (4,84), teknologi ini telah memenuhi sebagian besar parameter Permenkes No. 2 Tahun 2023. Survei menunjukkan 85% masyarakat bersedia membayar Rp50.000–150.000/bulan/KK untuk akses air olahan, dan BUMDes berkomitmen mengelola unit secara berkelanjutan. Kegiatan ini berkontribusi pada SDG 6 (Air Bersih dan Sanitasi Layak) melalui pendekatan berbasis bukti, partisipatif, dan replikabel untuk wilayah gambut lainnya.  Kata kunci: air gambut, teknologi tepat guna, pemberdayaan masyarakat, keberlanjutan, Muara Enggelam Abstract               This community service activity aims to improve access to safe drinking water for the Muara Enggelam community through the implementation of peat water treatment technology based on laboratory characterization. The method used is Participatory Action Research with four stages: socialization, training, technology implementation, and impact monitoring. The developed technology integrates coagulation-flocculation (alum 15–30 mg/L), pH neutralization (KOH), sedimentation, tower aeration, multi-stage filtration (sand–gravel–silica–ion exchange resin IRA-958), and UV disinfection. Results showed significant improvement in water quality parameters: turbidity decreased from 21.8–65.9 to 0.93 NTU (<3 standard), iron (Fe) from 0.2–0.4 to 0.07 mg/L (<0.2 mg/L), and manganese (Mn) from <0.02 to 0.02 mg/L (<0.1 mg/L). Although treated water pH remained acidic (4.84), the technology met most parameters of Minister of Health Regulation No. 2/2023. Survey results indicated 85% of households were willing to pay Rp50,000–150,000/month for treated water, and the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) committed to sustainable management. This activity contributes to SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through an evidence-based, participatory, and replicable approach for other peatland areas.                 Keywords: peat water, appropriate technology, community empowerment, sustainability, Muara Enggelam

Abstract

Peat water is an abundant raw water source in tropical peatlands; however, its use for drinking water is constrained by its acidic pH, high colour, elevated levels of natural organic matter (NOM), and microbial contamination, all of which increase the risk of carcinogenic disinfection byproducts when chlorinated. In Muara Enggelam Village, Kutai Kartanegara Regency, communities rely heavily on peat water and incur high costs to obtain clean water from neighbouring areas. This study aimed to design a laboratory-validated hybrid water treatment system capable of producing potable water from peat sources in remote communities. Water samples were collected from upstream, downstream, and an existing community treatment unit and analysed for physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters. Raw peat water exhibited acidic pH (5.11–5.66), high colour (176–235 TCU), turbidity (21.8–85.9 NTU), elevated iron concentrations (0.2–0.4 mg/L), and severe microbial contamination. The existing community system effectively reduced turbidity and iron, but further reduced pH, leaving residual colour and detectable bacteria. Based on laboratory results and process evaluation, a four-stage hybrid system is proposed, consisting of pH neutralisation with quicklime, controlled coagulation–flocculation, multistage filtration using quartz sand, activated carbon, and ion-exchange resin, followed by ultraviolet disinfection to prevent disinfection byproduct formation. System sustainability is supported through a village-owned enterprise management model and community willingness to pay of IDR 50,000–150,000 per month. The proposed system demonstrates that peat water can be transformed into a safe, resilient drinking water source for remote tropical communities through an integrated technical and institutional approach.

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the abundance, diversity, uniformity, and dominance of plankton in fish stomachs and waters that are expected to provide information about water productivity. The research was carried out in a tributary of the Ogan River, Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra at three stations, namely Indralaya Mulya Village, Tanjung Seteko Village and Muara Penimbung Village. The method used field surveys and location determination using purposive sampling with fish stomach contents, water samples for plankton observations, and water quality parameters. Fish sampling was carried out six times in 3 months, and water samples for plankton observations were one time per month, from April to June 2018. Plankton is found in fish stomachs and waters with a total abundance of 35.6 - 448.12 ind/l plankton consisting of 8 divisions with 11 classes. The plankton diversity index has moderate diversity and moderate community stability with a value between 1.11 - 1.45. The uniformity index of plankton in the fish stomach showed small uniformity of plankton (0.41-0.67), while in the waters, at station three and station 1 in April, the uniformity was high (E values 0.72 and E 0.93). The value of the plankton dominance index is in the range of 0.27-0.37. No species dominate other species or D = 0 (0.5), with moderately polluted water quality

Abstract

One form of community-based health service is Posyandu. Generally, Posyandu cadres are members of the community who do not have a background as medical or health professionals, so in the field, they often face various obstacles and limitations in providing health services. This community service activity was conducted in Musi Banyuasin Regency. A total of 72 Posyandu and nutrition post cadres from nine villages, namely Babat Supat, Babat Ramba Jaya, Sukamaju, Letang, Tri Tunggal, Pangkalan Tungkal, Simpang Tungkal, Mangsang, and Muara Merang villages. The methods used were assessment, material delivery (education), and practice or demonstration. The pre-test and post-test scores showed that this activity succeeded in increasing the knowledge and abilities of Posyandu and nutrition post cadres. Cadres gained a better understanding of using anthropometry and determining the nutritional status of pregnant women, infants, and toddlers. In addition, cadres also better understood and were able to practice preparing balanced nutritious menus for Supplementary Feeding (PMT) at the Posyandu.
