Abstract

This research is titled "Representation of Japanese Culture on Ryokan in the Hanasaku Iroha Anime". This study aims to determine the characteristics of the ryokan depicted in the Hanasaku Iroha anime and the representation of Japanese culture in the ryokan. The data was collected using the observation method, analyzing the data using the descriptive method, and presenting the data analysis using the informal method. The theory used is the Theory of Anthropology and the Semiotic Theory of Roland Barthes. Based on the research results, it is known that the depiction of the ryokan in the Hanasaku Iroha anime is divided into the location of the ryokan and the food facilities in the ryokan. Most of the ryokan are built near the onsen with the aim of allowing guests to enjoy the onsen with the natural heat of the mountains, but it is possible that ryokan are also built in urban areas. The food facilities in the ryokan are kaiseki ryori as Japanese specialties which are one of the attractions for guests to stay. In the cultural representation of the ryokan, there are three cultural concepts found in the data. The first is the concept of uchi-soto which is seen from the genkan area with guests as soto and staff as uchi so that when entering the ryokan, guests have entered the uchi area of ??the ryokan. Second, the representation of the wabi-sabi concept can be seen from the ryokan garden focuses on imperfection and simplicity. Finally, the embodiment of the wa and ma concepts is depicted from the washitsu room which emphasizes harmony and empty space.

Abstract

SK-II as an exclusive cosmetic brand from P&G company tries to use social issues about woman’s marginalization as their topics in the commercial theme #changedestiny. This study aims to analyze the advertiser’s real intentions in the text of the SK-II #changedestiny commercial by implementing the three dimensions of critical discourse analysis by Fairclough. The data is collected from the official SK-II and SK-II Indonesia channels on YouTube since they provide qualitative audiovisual data that can be widely accessed and contains creative values. This research uses qualitative analysis methods, by describing the analysis starting from the discussion of the linguistic aspect as a text analysis that finds the repetition of the keyword “change destiny” and the insertion of the word skin in the phrase, becoming “change skin's destiny”. This article found that the #change destiny campaign showed an insistent interest by inserting the word “skin” between the phrase “change destiny”.  Although the campaign seems to support the empowerment of women, it also has the main motive to promote its cosmetics which they claim could prevent skin aging. Video ads tend to display implicit recommendations for using their products. The SK-II Change Destiny series advertisement raises social issues that harm women, in the form of video testimonials with a storyline starting from the difficulties faced by women in self-actualization, and ending with success in changing destiny. It is concluded that by showing partiality to women as target consumers, SK-II presents itself as a brand that cares about more than just their consumers’ skin problems, but also the reality that occurs in society, to promote a basis for consumers’ loyalty.

Abstract

This research is titled "Post-Earthquake and Tsunami Conditions in Japan in Ehon". This research aims to understand the post-earthquake and tsunami conditions in Japan following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011, as depicted in the ehon series "Kataritsugi Ohanashi Ehon 3-gatsu 11-nichi". Data collection was conducted using library research methods, observation techniques, and note-taking. The data analysis technique used was descriptive analysis, and the presentation of data analysis used both formal and informal methods. The theories employed were the Sociology of Literature Theory and Charles Sanders Peirce's Semiotics Theory. The results obtained in this research indicate that the natural disaster events of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 in Japan are reflected in the collection of ehon "Kataritsugi Ohanashi Ehon 3-gatsu 11-nichi". Within the ehon collection, the earthquake and tsunami are depicted as causing significant losses, both in terms of loss of life and economic impact on Japan. Interestingly, the effects of the earthquake and tsunami narrated in the ehon are presented in a way that is not frightening and easily understandable by children, serving as an educational resource about earthquakes and tsunamis.
