Abstract

Smoking has become a lifestyle that affects human health and causes many diseases, including respiratory system disorders, cancer, infertility, and cardiovascular diseases. Cigarette smoke contains harmful ingredients that trigger the formation of free radicals that can damage cells. Dates become a source of antioxidants. Some studies showed that dates have high antioxidant activity due to their compounds, such as carotene, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Date palm fruit juice is widely sold on the market, but date research on fruit juice is still limited. The present study was designed to evaluate the preventive effect of date palm fruit juice in lung histopathology of mice induced by cigarette smoke. Twenty-four mice were exposed to cigarette smoke and then treated with date palm juice in different doses (5, 10, and 20 ml/kg BW) daily for 14 days. On the 15th day, mice were sacrificed, and the lung organ was separated for microscopic observation. The results showed that starting a low dose of date fruit juice treatment can minimize lung damage comparable to vitamin C, based on the histopathological profile and scoring of the lung damage. These findings suggest that date juice has been proven to have a protective effect in preventing and reducing lung damage due to exposure to cigarette smoke through its antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Coffee contains bioactive compounds such as chlorogenic acid and caffeine. Chlorogenic acid is recognized as a natural antioxidant, while caffeine is widely used to reduce fatigue and drowsiness. This study aims to simultaneously determine the content of chlorogenic acid and caffeine in robusta coffee leaf powder (Coffea canephora) using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) densitometry. The study identified an optimal eluent composition of ethyl acetate:formic acid:distilled water (18:1:1), with maximum wavelengths of 330 nm for chlorogenic acid and 274 nm for caffeine. High linearity was demonstrated with correlation coefficients of 0.993 for chlorogenic acid and 0.994 for caffeine. Sensitivity was validated with LOD values of 100.664 ng for chlorogenic acid and 297.232 ng for caffeine, and LOQ values of 301.994 ng for chlorogenic acid and 891.697 ng for caffeine. Selectivity was confirmed as the method effectively separated chlorogenic acid, caffeine, and other compounds with a resolution (Rs) ≥ 1.5, while specificity was evidenced through purity and identity values exceeding 0.99. Precision was proven through repeatability (%RSD for chlorogenic acid: 2.94%; caffeine: 2.27%) and intermediate precision (%RSD for chlorogenic acid: 2.26%; caffeine: 2.18%). Accuracy was achieved with mean recovery rates of 102.22% for chlorogenic acid and 99.73% for caffeine. The determination of chlorogenic acid and caffeine concentrations in robusta coffee leaf powder revealed variations between samples: PTPN XII Renteng yielded 2.278% ± 0.209% for chlorogenic acid and 1.171% ± 0.821% for caffeine, while Puslitkoka Indonesia samples showed 1.238% ± 0.206% for chlorogenic acid and 0.917% ± 0.823% for caffeine. Based on validation parameter assessments, the method is deemed valid as it meets all acceptance criteria for each parameter. This research provides an efficient and accurate analytical approach for simultaneous determination of bioactive compounds in robusta coffee leaves.

Abstract

Kesehatan merupakan kondisi fisik dan mental yang bebas dari penyakit dan dapat meningkatkan kesejahteraaan masyarakat. Obat adalah bahan yang digunakan untuk mencegah, menyembuhkan, dan meningkatkan kesehatan, namun, obat juga dapat bersifat toksik bila tidak digunakan secara rasional. Diketahui bahwa lebih dari 60% masyarakat Indonesia melakukan pengobatan sendiri atau swamedikasi, dan diantaranya, ada yang menyimpan obat keras tanpa resep termasuk antibiotik, menyimpan obat kadaluarsa, dan membuang obat dengan cara yang salah. Hal ini disebabkan karena kurangnya pemahaman dan kesadaran masyarakat terkait cara mendapatkan, menggunakan, menyimpan, dan membuang obat dengan benar. Apoteker memiliki peran dalam meningkatkan derajat kesehatan masyarakat melalui berbagai pelayanan kefarmasian, salah satunya melalui DAGUSIBU (Dapatkan, Gunakan, Simpan, Buang) Obat. Ibu adalah pilar kesehatan yang berperan penting dalam mengatur berbagai hal dalam keluarga, termasuk penyediaan dan pengelolaan obat-obatan dirumah, Oleh karena itu, dilakukan penyuluhan terkait DAGUSIBU secara lisan dan tertulis melalui power point dan leaflet pada ibu-ibu kader PKK di Desa Jember Kidul, Kecamatan Kaliwates, Kabupaten Jember. Evaluasi kegiatan didapatkan terdapat peningkatan pengetahuan peserta sebanyak 27.5% melalui hasil pre-test dan post-test. Oleh karena itu, tema ini layak diadakan secara rutin dan diperluas cakupannya ke wilayah lain untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan kesadaran individu sehingga dapat mencegah penyalahgunaan obat dan permasalahan kesehatan lainnya
