Abstract

This article seeks to trace how Muhammadiyah cultivates its Muslim intellectuals, particularly in the early 21st century, and examines how their contributions promote intellectual and charitable initiatives. Through interviews with prominent Muhammadiyah leaders and scholars, as well as documentary research, the article reveals that the emergence of Muhammadiyah intellectuals in the early twenty-first century is rooted in two types of educational institutions. The first group consists of those who completed their education at pesantren, while the second comprises individuals educated within the national school system who also graduated from higher education institutions. Social and political conditions further contributed to the formation of Muhammadiyah intellectuals. The large number of Muhammadiyah charities has led to criticism that Muhammadiyah intellectual thought is stagnant. Their focus has largely been directed toward supporting regular and tangible organizational activities, including humanitarian efforts, social initiatives, and educational programs, among others.

Abstract

This study empirically examines the effectiveness of an integrated empowerment program that combines halal certification assistance and creative packaging design to enhance the competitiveness of MSMEs in the religious tourism area of the Great Mosque of Demak, Central Java. Using an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the program involved participatory asset mapping, facilitation of halal certification in collaboration with BPJPH and a local Islamic higher education institution, Islamic-themed packaging design training, and sharia-compliant digital marketing assistance. A descriptive–evaluative design was employed with quantitative and qualitative data collected before and after the intervention. The results show that all 15 MSMEs obtained halal certification, adopted redesigned packaging that reflects local Islamic identity, and achieved an average sales increase of about 52% within three months. Qualitative evidence indicates improved halal literacy, stronger product identity, and greater market confidence. The study concludes that integrating halal certification and packaging innovation through an asset-based approach can effectively strengthen MSME competitiveness in religious tourism destinations.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between constitutional rights and institutional religious identity through Islamic Religious Education (IRE) at Muhammadiyah universities in Eastern Indonesia, in which the majority of students are Christian. Although the law guarantees students’ rights to receive religious education in accordance with their beliefs, some Islamic higher education institutions pay insufficient attention to this provision. Through interviews, document analysis, and classroom observations, this study investigates how religious education at Muhammadiyah universities is managed to balance Muhammadiyah’s institutional educational identity with the legal requirements related to students’ constitutional rights to obtain religious education that corresponds to their respective religions. The findings show Muhammadiyah’s commitment to providing religious education that accommodates students' religious diversity through an instructional approach known as Multicultural AIK. Nevertheless, more inclusive steps remain necessary, including facilitating religious education that explicitly indicates that the instruction students receive aligns with the religion they adhere to.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of “shame” from an Islamic perspective and its representation through “Meme Velocity” on the social media platform TikTok. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis, this study examines the narratives, diction, religious ideological affiliations, and audience responses to shame-themed memes disseminated by Salafi-aligned accounts. The novelty of this study lies in the concept of shame in Islam and the analysis of audience responses on social media. The findings reveal that shame in Islam is a noble virtue rooted in faith (al-Haya’) and serves as a means of self-restraint against forbidden acts. The analyzed memes promote the value of shame and critique current trends, particularly the “Velocity” trend, which is deemed contrary to Islamic values. This study also reveals that these memes trigger a variety of responses, ranging from support and prayers to hostile reactions, reflecting the dynamics of digital da’wah and audience reception. The contribution of this research lies in enriching the study of digital da’wah and how the concept of modesty in Islam is constructed through social media, as well as providing implications for digital da’wah practitioners and helping to understand the complexities of religious communication in the digital age.
