Abstract

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) variety Yuvita is one of the eggplant cultivars grown in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The cultivation of eggplant in peatland areas of West Kalimantan faces several constraints, particularly the low availability of macro and micronutrients in the soil. Improvement of eggplant production can be achieved through the application of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of liquid organic fertilizer derived from sugarcane bagasse decomposed using Trichoderma harzianum (R3) on the growth of eggplant. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments, namely control (P0), 25 mL/L (P1), 50 mL/L (P2), and 75 mL/L (P3). The results showed that the application of sugarcane bagasse-based LOF significantly affected fresh weight, dry weight, and total chlorophyll content of eggplant plants. However, it did not significantly influence plant height and number of leaves. The best concentration was 50 mL/L, which produced a fresh weight of 8.80 g, a dry weight of 0.594 g, and a total chlorophyll content of 131.38 mg/L.

Abstract

West Kalimantan experiences a tropical climate characterized by elevated humidity, which creates an environment conducive to the proliferation of Pityriasis versicolor due to Malassezia furfur. Plants with medicinal properties that include alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, tannins, and quinones, such as sembung rambat (Mikania micrantha Kunth.), represent promising sources of antifungal compounds. This research sought to assess the antifungal efficacy of the methanol extract from sembung rambat leaves against Malassezia furfur in a laboratory setting and to identify its minimum inhibitory concentration. The disc diffusion technique was employed with extract concentrations of 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35%. Ketoconazole at 2% acted as the positive control, while sterile distilled water was utilized as the negative control. The diameters of the inhibition zones were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test, accompanied by Duncan's multiple range test. The findings indicated that all concentrations of the extract successfully suppressed the growth of Malassezia furfur. The minimum inhibitory concentration was established at 20%, resulting in an inhibition zone measuring 0.48 cm in diameter after 48 hours of incubation. The methanol extract of sembung rambat leaves displayed a fungistatic action against Malassezia furfur in vitro.

Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country with high plant biodiversity, including Centella asiatica L., a medicinal plant known to contain various bioactive secondary metabolites. This study aimed to identify the classes of secondary metabolites present in the ethanolic leaf extract of C. asiatica through qualitative phytochemical screening. The research was conducted as a laboratory-based study using standard phytochemical methods based on classical procedures to detect alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of C. asiatica leaves contained all tested secondary metabolite groups, indicating a diverse phytochemical profile. The presence of these compounds suggests potential biological and pharmacological activities, such as antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Further studies are recommended to isolate and characterize individual bioactive compounds and to evaluate their specific biological activities.

Abstract

Old coconut water is often discarded by the community as waste. This community service activity aimed to provide training on processing coconut water into nata de coco for the members of the Family Welfare Empowerment Group (PKK) in Sungai Kakap Village, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan. The implementation of this community service program consisted of several stages, including dissemination/socialization, hands-on practice, and discussion sessions. The activity began with the preparation of tools and materials at the Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University (FMIPA UNTAN), followed by a field visit to the target village, participant gathering, socialization of nata de coco production materials, joint practice with workshop participants, and a discussion session. The nata de coco production training was successfully carried out at the Sungai Kakap Village Office, West Kalimantan. Based on the questionnaire results, the PKK members stated that the activity was beneficial, and many expressed their interest in applying the process and producing nata de coco for personal consumption as well as for potential commercialization.
