Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the role of the film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (2017) in promoting Sumba tourism by analyzing how visual elements, dialogue, and cultural representations construct an image of exoticism and authenticity associated with Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara. Method: The research employs a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, focusing on three levels of meaning—denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through in-depth scene observation, documentation, and supporting literature on tourism and film studies. Results: The findings reveal that the film highlights distinctive cultural and natural features of Sumba, including Sandalwood horses, the Tanarara savanna hills, the local language, and traditional transportation. These elements not only emphasize cultural identity but also create an imaginative narrative of exoticism that strengthens the destination’s appeal and positions Sumba as a unique cultural tourism site. Novelty: This research contributes to the understanding of film as an indirect yet powerful medium for tourism promotion, offering insights into how cinematic representation can shape destination branding and suggesting a collaborative role for government, tourism stakeholders, and filmmakers in cultural-based tourism development.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze how moral messages are represented in the film, focusing on how these meanings are constructed and conveyed through narrative and visual elements. Method: The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method by applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, which includes three stages of analysis: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through observation of significant scenes in the film as well as documentation from various supporting literature. Results: The findings reveal that High & Low The Movie 3: Final Mission represents moral messages through the values of solidarity, courage, and sacrifice demonstrated in the actions of the main characters. The film deconstructs dominant myths related to power, development, and individual heroism, while constructing a new narrative about the collective strength of society in resisting injustice. Novelty: The urgency of this study lies in the lack of research employing Roland Barthes’ semiotics to analyze moral messages in High & Low The Movie 3: Final Mission. The conclusion of this study affirms that films can serve as an effective medium in delivering moral values and shaping social awareness. Future research is recommended to explore the representation of moral messages in other film genres or in digital-based visual media.

Abstract

This study explores the marketing communication and distribution strategies of local films in Sidoarjo through a case study approach involving three active community-based film groups. The objective is to identify the distribution channels utilized, assess the effectiveness of promotional strategies employed, and evaluate the potential for community driven local films to develop independently and sustainably. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of the film communities’ activities. Findings indicate the use of five primary distribution channels: local film screenings, film festivals, roadshows, alternative screenings, social media, and digital platforms such as Digital TV. Among these, film festivals and alternative screenings emerged as the most dominant strategies due to their wider audience reach and their ability to foster public appreciation of local cinema. Furthermore, elements of the marketing mix such as ticket pricing, digital promotional strategies, visual design, and audience segmentation play a crucial role in strengthening the market positioning of these films. This research demonstrates that community-based local films in Sidoarjo possess the potential to grow independently and sustainably through alternative distribution and digital-based marketing efforts.
