Abstract

Education should keep up with societal changes. If students have the options of gaining ingormation which is presented interestingly through a variety of media outside the school, surely they should have them in schools as well. Besides, the educational tasks ehich are getting electronic age heavier and more complex in this electrical age, cannot be carried out through lecturing in traditional classrooms where pupils sit still and follow in unison the lecture or what ever presentation is made. It seems inevitable for us to agree to the adoption of media in the teaching learning process, in this case modern media. The writer would to suggest that questions about whather we should adapt new media new media for educators to accept the compound vies on technology. In educational terms this vies means that the introduction of electronic media, for example, will not prove a panacea as the optimists might claim, nor will it necessarily dehumanize, as the pessimists for instance, television may bring the outside world into the schoolroom, but it very likely impose rigid class viewing schedule (Gillett, 1973). The two basic functions of educational media are: informing and developing mental skills (Solomon, 1974). Inthis paper the emphasis woll be put on the discussion of the affective aspevts of the use of media on the learners, on the onterctions among learners themselves, and on the interactions between learners and the teacher. Hopefully, through the discussion clearer eideas about the matter under consideration will be obtained.

Abstract

The use of writing strategies has been widely acknowledged to improve students’ writing achievement. Due to lack knowledge of writing strategies, it is important for students to explore their learning strategies in writing. This study is aimed 1) to describe the students’ writing strategies preference; 2) to identify the difference in the writing strategies employed by students in every writing stage. A survey was conducted to one hundred and forty students majoring in English. The participants filled out the Writing Strategies questionnaire. The result indicated that the students’ writing strategies use fell in medium level. Moreover, there is no significant difference on students’ writing strategies used in every writing stage. However, knowing the students preference on writing strategies is beneficial both for students and the teachers.

Abstract

The improvement of quality and relevancy,of education with the societal needs has been one of the big educational issues in Indonesia. It has been one of the considerations for the decision to adopt Education Act No. 20/2003 on National Education System. With its quality being improved, education will fulfill well its function, which is "to develop the capability, character, and civilization of the nation for enhancing its intellectual capability" (Education Act No.20/2003, Article 3).The enhancement of the intellectual life of the nation is in fact one of the four aims of our independence in 1945, as stated in the fourth paragraphs of the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution. The quality and relevancy of our national education will certainly contribute to the achievement of the god of our national education stated in Article 4 of the 2003 Education Act, which is "developing learners potentials so that they become persons-imbued with human values who are faithful and pious to one and only God; who possess morals and noble character; who are healthy, knowledgeable,-competent, creative; independent; and as citizens are democratic and responsible.".Since formal education is the main stream and it process-mostly takes place in classrooms in which teachers and lecturers play their various roles, the quality of teachers and lecturers is the one of the determining  factor in solving the problem of quality and relevancy. Related to this was the promulgation of "Teachers as Professionals" on 2 December 2005 by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. in the same year. Law No."14/2005 on Teachers and Lecturers was declared valid.Certification is related to the needs for ensuring that teachers and lecturers as professionals possess the qualities which can contribute to the success in achieving quality education which is relevant for society needs which change with the developments resulting from the advancements of science and technology. This paper will explore aspects of certification and its implications for-teacher education, especially EFL teacher education, both pre-service and in-service.

Abstract

Many factors are required in order to increase the skills of English of higher education students, specifically computer science students. Of the factors, teachers play a very important role since they are the agents of change in the classrooms; not to neglect that the students are also the agents of their own changes. Using Brown’s 12 pedagogical characteristics of a good language teacher as its theory, this is a report of the first step of design-based research, practical problems encountered by teachers of English to computer science students conducted at two private universities in Indonesia. Among the 12 characteristics, knowledge of approaches to language teaching seems to be the biggest challenge that came upon the teachers. The findings of this step will subsequently be used as the bases to go further to the second cycle of design-based research, which is the development of solutions informed by existing design principles and technological innovations.

Abstract

The fact that English teachers teaching in a computer science department may not really know detail about information technology (IT) as a subject, as well as its terminologies, brings about difficulties when deciding what kind of teaching materials are appropriate to the student’s learning needs. Another issue is that some computer science teachers do not have an English language teaching background. This can be a drawback for this group of teachers since they do not really know how to teach the language. The following discussion is a needs analysis used as a preliminary study to develop an in-service training (IST) model to improve English teachers’ pedagogical and professional competencies in a computer science department. Pedagogical knowledge, skill, and attitude, and professional competency became the core study since these two were the obvious difficulties faced by the two groups of teachers. This study involved English computer science teachers, the curriculum administrator, and the students in two private universities and one state university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Observations, open interviews, and questionnaires were used to gather the data.

Abstract

Blended Learning Model (BLM) has frequently been viewed as one of the most effective models in teaching. Many studies have been conducted to reveal the effectiveness of BLM to teach various subjects, yet very few previous studies touched the use of BLM to teach English pronunciation. This research aimed at filling the gap describing how English pronunciation teacher put into practice the BLM in pronunciation instruction and what the students’ responses toward this model. This research used qualitative research method and employed field notes observation, a set of questionnaires, and semi-structured interview as the instruments. The research participants were 29 students from English education study program at teacher training institute at STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo, East java, Indonesia. The result showed that BLM was employed through three related stages in pronunciation class; online materials, the online tutor, and the face-to-face teacher. Additionally, BLM increased students’ interests and motivation to learn pronunciation. These results can be viewed as a source of perspective points while teaching pronunciation skill in EFL setting.
