Abstract

The research is aimed to improve the students’ English reading comprehensionskills of Grade XI IPA at SMA Islam 3 Sleman Yogyakarta.The subjects of the research were 17 students. This research focused on theimplementation of SQ3R method to improve the students’ reading comprehension skills.The research was done in two cycles. Each cycle was divided into four steps, i.e planning,acting, reflecting, and evaluating. The data were collected by observations, field notes,interviews, questionnaires, and documentations. The data were analized usingquantitative and qualitative interpretations. The succeed of the research were achievedbased on some criteria related to the students’ or teacher’s improvement changes.The result of the research shows that the improvement happened on six aspectsthat become reading comprehension criteria, i.e determining main ideas or topic sentence,recognizing detail information, mastering vocabularies and grammar, searching implicitand explicit information in texts. The improvements can be seen through the averagescores in each criterion. The average score in English reading comprehension skillsbefore the action was 27.64. The score in the first action was 33.52 and that in thesecond cycle was 40. It can be concluded that the improvement was 21.27% from pretestto the first cycle, 19.33% from the first cycle to the second cycle and 44.71% frompre-test until the last cycle. The improvement in each criterion was determining mainidea or topic (33.96%), recognizing detail information (68.57%), mastering vocabulary(85.71%), mastering grammar (28.81%), searching implicit information in a text (51.06%),and explicit information (25.53%).Keywords: English Reading Comprehension Skills, Grade XI IPA at SMA Islam 3 SlemanYogyakarta, SQ3R.

Abstract

The aim of this research and development study was to develop a set of English teaching and learning materials for nursing students. The development of the materials was carried out in three phases: planning, developing, and evaluating. The research findings revealed the nursing students’ needs concerning media, language instruction, assignments, lecturer’s and student’s roles,  setting of the class, learning activities, use of English for the students, students’ intention to learn English, setting in which English was used, learning themes, input texts, students’ English proficiency, target culture knowledge, appropriateness of the English book used, English skills the students want to improve, and layout of the materials. The means of materials were 3.95 in terms of the language teaching and 3.63 in terms of the content. The means of three units were 3.43, 3.44, and 3.33. The means implied that the developed materials were appropriate to be used in the teaching and learning process as the materials met the nursing students’ needs and interest.

Abstract

Background: Learning assessment has been left behind compared to other components of teaching such as instructional methods or media development. This paper aims to describe problems faced by English teacher candidates studying at the English Education Department of a university in Java, Indonesia in developing test kits for assessing students’ learningMethodology: This study is qualitative in nature. The investigation involved 28 teacher candidates taking two sequential courses on testing namely English Learning Assessment and English Language Learning Test Development who were then asked to write a set of English learning achievement tests as their end-of-class mini project. A total of 1052 multiple choice questions were analyzed by three investigators to reveal the teacher candidates’ problems in developing test kits. Problems are reported and described quantitatively. Findings: The study reveals that the students face difficulties in formulating test kit formats, stems, options, and texts.Conclusion: Recommendations include education for writing test questions and improving or revising the learning syllabus and materials of the above-mentioned courses on language learning assessment Originality: The number of questions or participants can be improved as well as the scope of analysis to make the study more reliable.

Abstract

One of the problems in Pundung Hamlet is the lack of street lighting, so the KKN 032 Program in Pundung Hamlet aims to solve the problem of street lighting with solar-powered PJU lights to increase security. In addition, teaching Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) in elementary schools to add insight to children in elementary schools to add insight to children, socialization of Digital Marketing and UMKM rebranding, and socialization of Trap Barrier to increase agricultural yields. Activities took place January 11 - February 11, 2024, focusing on improving community welfare, knowledge, and skills. The methods used include preparation of work plans, program implementation, and evaluation. The survey results showed problems with street lighting and potential accidents. The solution is the use of solar-powered PJU lights. In addition, there are TOGA teaching activities in elementary schools, socialization of Digital Marketing and UMKM rebranding, and Trap Barrier socialization for farmers. Hopefully, this program will improve the welfare, business knowledge, and image of Pundung Hamlet, involving active participation of students in community development evenly and thoroughly.

Abstract

Background: Metode Game-Based Learning menjadi alternatif pembelajaran yang memotivasi siswa SMA dalam belajar, sehingga dapat menstimulasi siswa untuk merefleksikan hasil belajar. Metode ini dapat diterapkan kepada siswa SMA agar memahami konsep Gut Microbiome dengan mudah yang bermanfaat untuk menjaga kesehatan usus siswa. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk mengedukasi peran penting Gut Microbiome melalui permainan kartu “Gutsy Game”. Metode: Edukasi Gut Microbiome diikuti oleh 59 siswa MA Sabilarrasyad Samarinda, melalui 4 tahapan yaitu Pre-test, pemaparan materi, praktek Gutsy Game, Post-test dan evaluasi kegiatan. Nilai pre-test dan post-test diperoleh dari pertanyaan seputar materi Gut Microbiome sedangkan evaluasi kegiatan diukur menggunakan kuisioner yang ditentukan berdasarkan Indeks Kepuasan Kegiatan. Hasil: Pemahaman siswa tentang konsep Gut Microbiome meningkat 20%, materi informatif (62%), relevan (70%), memotivasi pola hidup sehat (83%), dan pelaksanaan kegiatan memuaskan (70%). Berdasarkan Indeks Kepuasaan, siswa menilai kegiatan edukasi baik (83,3), menunjukkan metode permainan Gutsy Game berhasil menarik minat siswa untuk belajar. Kesimpulan: Gutsy Game dapat digunakan untuk memahami konsep dasar keseimbangan Gut Microbiome dan meningkatkan minat belajar pada siswa MA Sabilarrasyad Samarinda.

Abstract

Obat antiinflamasi nonsteroid (NSAID) merupakan terapi yang umum digunakan, khususnya pada kelompok lansia, namun penggunaannya dapat menyebabkan gangguan mukosa lambung yang dipicu oleh penghambatan enzim COX-1 dan peningkatan stres oksidatif. Artikel yang dianalisis merupakan penelitian primer dari tahun 2014 hingga 2024 dengan desain in vivo, in vitro, atau observasional yang relevan dengan topik yang dikaji berdasarkan hasil utama, ekspresi gen terkait, dan mekanisme molekuler. Hasil sintesis dari sembilan studi utama menunjukkan bahwa senyawa seperti omega-3 (EPA dan DHA), astaxanthin, polifenol, dan komponen aktif dari walnut dan Gardenia jasminoides mampu memberikan perlindungan mukosa melalui aktivasi jalur molekuler Nrf2/HO-1 dan AMPK/SIRT1, serta menekan jalur inflamasi NF-κB dan COX-2. Namun, konsumsi lemak jenuh tinggi dapat memperparah kondisi mukosa dengan meningkatkan IL-17A dan menurunkan gen pelindung seperti TLR4, Ocln, dan Nr1h4. Hasil studi ini menunjukkan bahwa pola makan dan komponen nutrisi tertentu mampu memengaruhi ekspresi gen dan jalur molekuler yang berperan dalam menjaga kesehatan mukosa lambung. Temuan ini mendukung potensi pendekatan nutrigenomik sebagai strategi preventif dan pendukung terapi yang lebih aman untuk mengurangi risiko gangguan saluran cerna akibat penggunaan NSAID dalam jangka panjang.

Abstract

Allium spp. has long been recognized for its diverse therapeutic benefits, particularly as a natural source of antibacterial agents. Various bioactive compounds found in Allium spp., such as allicin, diallyl disulfide, ajoene, and quercetin, have demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Research on the mechanisms of antibacterial action of these compounds reveals that they work by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, inhibiting protein synthesis, and interfering with bacterial metabolism. This literature review aims to examine existing studies on the antibacterial potential of Allium spp., reviewing the bioactive compounds involved, their mechanisms of action, and their effectiveness in inhibiting bacterial growth, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli. The findings of this review indicate that while their effectiveness may vary depending on the specific compound and form of application, Allium spp. shows considerable promise as a natural alternative for combating bacterial infections and addressing the growing issue of antibiotic resistance. This article provides deeper insights into the relevance and potential of Allium spp. in the development of antimicrobial therapies based on natural sources through a literature-based approach.

Abstract

Kombucha yang difermantasikan dari bunga telang (Clitoria ternatea) merupakan minuman fungsional dengan potensi antioksidan tinggi dan nilai tambah kesehatan. Beberapa penelitian melaporkan bahwa bunga telang kaya akan antosianin dan flavonoid, senyawa fenolik yang efektif menetralisir radikal bebas penyebab penyakit degeneratif seperti kanker, penyakit jantung, diabetes, dan penuaan dini serta mempertahankan mutu produk pangan. Metode tinjauan pustaka (literature review) menggunakan metode yang bersifat deskriptif-kualitatif dengan tujuan mengkaji potensi antioksidan kombucha berbasis bunga telang (Clitoria ternatea) sebagai minuman fungsional. Beberapa penelitian melaporkan aktivitas antioksidan yang diukur menggunakan metode DPPH pada kombucha bunga telang dengan rentang waktu fermentasi 8 hingga 20 hari menghasilkan aktivitas antioksidan yang tinggi dengan IC50 15%-19% dan % Inhibisi 70%-89%. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan dengan aktivitas antioksidan yang tinggi memiliki potensi sebagai minuman fungsional. Hasil review ini diharapkan dapat digunakan sebagai rujukan untuk penelitian lebih lanjut untuk mengetahui manfaat langsung dan kandungan dari kombucha bunga telang (Clitoria ternatea).

Abstract

Kaempferia rotunda L., also known as kunci pepet, is a local herbal plant with global potential traditionally used in various medicinal practices across Southeast Asia. This review summarizes the ethnobotanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological aspects of Kaempferia rotunda L., to explore its applications in modern medicine. Ethnobotanically, its rhizome has been widely utilized for treating digestive disorders, inflammation, and wound healing. Phytochemical studies reveal that Kaempferia rotunda L., contains flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, and terpenoids, contributing to its biological activities. Several studies have demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. With the increasing demand for natural-based therapies, further exploration of their active compounds and mechanisms of action is highly relevant. This review aims to provide a broader insight into the pharmaceutical potential of Kaempferia rotunda L., and encourage further research for the development of evidence-based herbal medicine.

Abstract

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) has been traditionally used for its analgesic and stimulant properties. Recent preclinical studies suggesting its potential as an anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic agent. A comprehensive search of PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar (2010-2024) using keywords “Kratom”, “inflammation”, and “diabetes” identified 82 studies. After applying inclusion criteria (original research, English/Bahasa Indonesia, in vivo animal models investigating anti-inflammatory/antidiabetic effects) and excluding reviews, in vitro studies, and conference abstracts, 14 studies comprising 9 key articles on the pharmacological activities of Kratom were analyzed. Dosages ranged from 0,5 mg/g to 500 mg/kg across various extraction methods and treatment durations. Studies show that Kratom extracts can inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α) via NF-κB, COX-2, and MAPK/ERK pathways. In diabetic models, Kratom reduced blood glucose levels by 15-45%, improved glucose tolerance, and enhanced antioxidant status. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed comparable efficacy, with optimal effects observed at 100-200 mg/kg doses. Despite these findings, safety concerns remain regarding toxicity, dependence, and drug interactions. Further toxicological studies and clinical trials are essential to validate its therapeutic potential. This review highlights the need for comprehensive research and regulatory evaluation to support the safe medicinal use of Kratom.
