Abstract

Speaking proficiency is essential for vocational school students because it supports effective communication in workplace contexts. However, students at SMKN 1 Tenggarong face difficulties in English speaking due to limited vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, low confidence, and classroom practices that emphasize repetition rather than interaction. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the role-play technique in improving students’ speaking skills. A quasi-experimental design was applied involving two groups, each consisting of 36 students. The experimental group received instruction through role-play activities, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Both groups completed pre-tests and post-tests to measure improvement in speaking performance. The treatment was conducted over six instructional meetings using job-related role-play scenarios. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with the assistance of SPSS. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group, with a post-test mean score of 85.33, compared to 66.83 in the control group. The p-value of 0.000 indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that role-play effectively enhances students’ speaking ability by increasing confidence, providing meaningful interaction, and supporting practical language use in vocational English contexts

Abstract

According to the Indonesian new curriculum which is generally called Kurikulum Merdeka reading comprehension of text becomes a fundamental skill of learning outcomes.  However, a long time before the new curriculum was released reading skills, especially in learning a foreign language particularly English have always been the main thing. Starting from this condition, this study aimed to describe the students’ reading comprehension of English textual literacy among the Zillenial generation. Another goal, of this study, was to identify the students’ reasons related to their reading in textual comprehension. This study applied mixed methods both quantitative and qualitative. The design used descriptive statistics and interviews. the instrument used was a test and a list of interviews. the population in this study was 99 students of Public Vocational Schools in Samarinda whereby, overall, this population also became the sample.  The result was the students in the fair category. The majority of students got a score around 70 which was included as a fair category. This is in line with the school policy of considering minimum passing grades in English subjects. From qualitative data, it was found that the students were helped by the test which was considered as lower-order thinking (LOT). The test was in multiple choice and the topic was familiar. Surprisingly, based on the findings, this Zillenial generation has low literacy as they acknowledged that they don’t have any specific time for doing English literacy except only the teacher’s command. If the topic of the text is considered difficult usually, they will use translator apps to comprehend the text easily.

Abstract

This study investigates how social media platforms can be leveraged to enhance self-directed English language learning among Muhammadiyah students. Utilizing a quantitative approach, data were collected from 72 students via a structured questionnaire measuring both social media use for English learning and self-directed learning (SDL) behaviors. Descriptive statistics revealed high engagement with social media for English learning (mean = 4.07) and robust self-directed learning tendencies (mean = 3.77), with no significant gender differences. Correlation analysis demonstrated a strong, statistically significant positive relationship between social media use and SDL (Pearson r = 0.793, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that social media is not only widely used and effective for English language learning but also a powerful enabler of self-directed learning in this context. The study highlights the potential of social media to bridge gaps in English education in geographically isolated regions and provides actionable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to foster autonomous, motivated language learners in Muhammadiyah institutions

Abstract

This study investigated the obstacles faced by Indonesian pre-service English teachers during their teaching practicum and the underlying causes at junior high schools in Southern Thailand. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three Indonesian pre-service English teachers undertaking their practicum at junior high schools in Southern Thailand to gather qualitative case study data. Six interconnected categories of issues exist: linguistic barriers (students' restricted vocabulary and pronunciation difficulties stemming from Thai, Malay, and Patani Malay); communication barriers (language disparities and dependence on translation); psychological barriers (students' apprehension regarding errors); and classroom engagement challenges (disinterest and diminished focus due to multilingual cognitive processes). Five contributing factors included restricted English exposure beyond the classroom, first language influence resulting in phonological interference, a curriculum-proficiency mismatch leading to systemic barriers, monotonous teacher-centered methodologies with insufficient learning media, and structural constraints such as time and facilities. Southern Thailand possesses a multitude of languages, rendering it distinctive within Thai EFL. Students were required to attain proficiency in Thai, Malay, Patani Malay, and Arabic before acquiring English as a fifth language. The results indicated that challenges in multilingual education are systemic, necessitating context-specific pedagogical approaches, enhanced training for novice educators, curriculum modifications to align with students' proficiency levels, and improved institutional support for junior high school teaching, including time and technological resources. Abstract

This study aims to explore the experiences of students in balancing their academic responsibilities with their active involvement in a campus organization, specifically MAPALA UMKT (Mahasiswa Pecinta Alam Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur). As student organizations offer valuable opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, and social engagement, they may also present challenges in managing time and maintaining academic motivation. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method to understand how students experience, navigate, and reflect on these dual roles. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with selected MAPALA UMKT members from different cohorts, academic levels, and organizational roles. The results revealed that while organizational involvement can become a source of time pressure and academic stress, it also fosters essential skills such as time management, self-discipline, and problem-solving, which in turn contribute positively to academic motivation. Students' ability to maintain balance often depends on their level of self-regulation, social support, and commitment to both domains. This study highlights the complex yet meaningful relationship between organizational engagement and academic life, offering insights for universities, student organizations, and students themselves in building better support systems and fostering holistic student development.

Abstract

The extensive utilization of social media in educational settings has heightened academic interest in its instructional potential, especially within the domain of English as a foreign Language (EFL). TikTok has garnered attention for its short form video format, which is thought to offer genuine language input and captivating listening exposure. Nevertheless, current research frequently highlights favorable results without adequate critical assesment. This study seeks to investigate the conditional efficacy of TikTok in enhancing EFL students listening abilities, while also analyzing learners perspective and the problems they face. A sequintal explanatory mixed-methods design was utilized. Quantitative data were collected via questionnaires administered to 57 undergraduate EFL students to ascertain broad trends in perceptions and experiences. To augment these findings, qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with a select group of participants, facilitating a more profound examination of individual perspectives. The data were examined utilizing descriptive statistic and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that students predominantly possess fairly favorable views of TikTok, especially regarding exposure to diverse English dialects, enhanced learning motivation, and adaptable access to auditory resources. Nevertheless, other questionnaire items exhibited indifferent replies, signifying that students learning experiences were not consistenly favorable.

Abstract

This study examines university students' impressions of Duolingo as a gamified tool for improving English vocabulary acquisition. This study used a mixed-method methodology, integrating quantitative data from 58 first-semester students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur with qualitative insights derived from five interviews. The study seeks to examine Duolingo's impact on vocabulary acquisition, learner motivation, and autonomous learning. Findings suggest that students predominantly view Duolingo as stimulating and beneficial for vocabulary acquisition, facilitated by its interactive elements like points, streaks, and prompt feedback. Nonetheless, constraints were observed, including reliance on the internet, restricted classroom integration, and insufficient teacher engagement. Although Duolingo seems to promote motivation and autonomous learning, its effect on vocabulary acquisition is contingent upon context. These data indicate that Duolingo serves more effectively as an ancillary learning resource rather than a substitute for classroom education

Abstract

This research investigated the association between digital literacy and English reading proficiency among senior high school students within a technology-supported learning context. Using a quantitative correlational approach, the study involved 59 eleventh-grade students from a public high school in East Kalimantan who were selected through simple random sampling. Data collection employed two instruments: a digital literacy survey and an English reading comprehension assessment. The collected data were processed using both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques with IBM SPSS Statistics. To satisfy the requirements for parametric testing, normality and linearity analyses were conducted beforehand. The Pearson correlation test identified a moderate yet significant positive relationship between the variables (r = 0.412, p = 0.001). These results indicate that students who demonstrate stronger digital literacy skills are more likely to achieve higher levels of English reading comprehension. The findings reinforce the value of incorporating digital literacy development into English instruction to support reading achievement in contemporary, technology-enhanced educational settings.

Abstract

Umrah is a series of rites performed in worship of the holy city of Mecca. Manasik preparation is the best preparation. Umrah is also a means of communicating with foreign citizens engaged in the same activities. The density of activities carried out quickly requires optimal health conditions for prospective Umrah pilgrims. Community service activities, carried out in the form of early detection of prospective pilgrims' health, have been conducted to identify the various possible diseases they may experience. Other activities were English communication training and a demonstration of Manasik. The activities were carried out by conducting health checks consisting of blood pressure, uric acid, blood sugar, and cholesterol. The activities were attended by the majority of female pilgrims, with an average age of 40 years, a systolic blood pressure of 121.5 mmHg, and a diastolic blood pressure of 85.75 mmHg. Additional results from blood component examinations showed that the highest abnormal blood sugar value was 457 mg/dL. Participants' English-speaking ability is expected to increase after receiving intensive training before departure. Participants' knowledge of Umrah rituals is limited because they were not exposed to how to perform them in the appropriate sequence beforehand. Community service activities are considered to build knowledge of health issues, manasik, and English communication skills during travel. Further detection during worship activities, more intensive practice in speaking English, and repetition of manasic material will help prospective Umrah pilgrims be better prepared overall.
