Abstract

Despite global students' mental health problems being prevalent, adequate attention and resources to treat mental health problems are still lacking. Meanwhile, several studies found that religious commitment and gratitude can play an essential role in addressing the issue of mental health problems. This study explored religious commitment to promote mental health and gratitude as moderating variables to address this gap. This study used the Brief Scale of Mental Health 12, the General Mental Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Gratitude Resentment and Appreciation Test (GRAT), and the Religious Commitment Inventory (RCI–10) scales. Data were taken from 320 students of four state Islamic Universities in East Java, Indonesia. This study utilized descriptive and regression analysis techniques. The result of the data analysis demonstrated three main findings as follows. First, the students had a high level of mental health. Second, religious commitment positively affected mental health. Third, gratitude could become a variable that strengthens the relationship between religious commitment and mental health. Research implication in education is attempting to improve mental health among students not merely on the religious commitment but also on emphasizing systematic ways to develop gratitude in students' daily lives as a moderator that plays a role in maintaining the relationship between mental health and religious commitment. This study was based solely on a quantitative approach; therefore, a mixed-method model is recommended for further investigation to understand the process of improving mental health through religious commitment and students' gratitude better.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine whether authoritative parenting reduces impulsive and compulsive buying in early adolescents. Using a quantitative correlational design, two separate analyses were conducted on a sample of 408 junior high school students (ages 12–15), divided into two groups. The first analysis assessed the relationship between authoritative parenting and impulsive buying, while the second examined its relationship with compulsive buying. the Authoritative Parenting Scale was used to measure authoritative parenting, while the Buying Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) and the Compulsive Buying Scale (CBS) were used to measure impulsive and compulsive buying, respectively. The results showed a negative and significant relationship between authoritative parenting and both impulsive (R = –.159, R² = .025, p = .023) and compulsive buying (R = –.219, R² = .048, p = .002). However, Fisher’s r-to-z test indicated no significant difference between the two effects (z = 0.59, p = .553). These findings suggest that authoritative parenting may protect adolescents from problematic buying tendencies and support early interventions targeting financial habits.

Abstract

The view that mental health can only be understood with a single approach can explain the existing phenomena. This paper aims to provide an alternative measurement model in conducting studies on student mental health. Data were obtained from 840 students at four state Islamic universities in East Java. Data was collected through the mental health scale. The percentage technique was used to examine the level and profile of mental health, while the variance analysis technique was used to investigate the differences between men and women. The analysis results show that the subjects have a high level of mental health and have a minimum mental illness profile. There was no evidence of a difference between men and women in terms of mental health. The results of this study have implications for the use of mental health measuring tools to be used as an alternative in measuring mental health.

Abstract

This research explores workplace well-being in the context of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, with a focus on aspects of justice, sincerity, obedience and calling. Workplace well-being in Islamic boarding schools includes a healthy work environment, social support, work-life balance, recognition of contributions, career development, and access to physical and mental health resources. Pesantren as an integral Islamic educational institution in Indonesian Muslim society has a unique approach to workplace well-being, which involves the values of simplicity, sincerity, independence, Islamic brotherhood and independence. This research uses a mixed method which combines qualitative grounded theory and quantitative descriptive approaches. Data was collected through interviews, observation and Likert scales. Development of an Islamic boarding school workplace well-being measuring tool through the steps of developing a theoretical framework, preparing a blueprint, writing items, expert assessment, reading tests, psychological scale tests, differential power and reliability analysis, and preparing the final scale. This measuring instrument was tested using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), showing four factors that were able to explain 90% of the variance in workplace well-being in Islamic boarding schools. CFA results indicate high validity and reliability of this instrument. Workplace well-being in Islamic boarding schools is formed from justice, sincerity, obedience and calling, which emphasizes internal spirit over external needs, approaching workplace spirituality from a positive psychology perspective. This research concludes that workplace well-being in Islamic boarding schools can be achieved through a harmonious balance between justice, obedience, sincerity and calling in carrying out Islamic boarding school duties.
