Abstract

Purpose– This study aims to develop and evaluate a school-based bullying prevention model integrating religious moderation principles to enhance adolescents’ understanding of bullying behavior within a Philippine secondary school context. Design/methods/approach – A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design was employed involving 74 tenth-grade students divided into experimental (n = 37) and control (n = 37) groups using purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of a two-day structured psychoeducational program integrating values of tolerance, empathy, and moral responsibility. Data were analyzed using Shapiro–Wilk normality testing followed by Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann–Whitney U tests. Findings– The experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant increase in bullying understanding scores from pre-test to post-test compared to the control group (p < .05). Gain score comparisons further indicated that the intervention contributed to measurable improvement in students’ cognitive awareness of bullying behavior. Research implications/limitations– The study is limited to one school context and employs purposive sampling, restricting broader generalization. Future research should test the model across multiple schools and cultural settings and examine behavioral outcomes beyond cognitive understanding. Originality/value-This study offers a theoretically grounded and context-specific bullying prevention framework integrating religious moderation within moral regulation and social-ecological perspectives.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (IRE) plays a significant role in fostering students' faith, moral values, and character development. However, its implementation among Indonesian diaspora students at Sekolah Bimbingan (SB) Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur, encounters various challenges arising from the students' social, cultural, and residential environments. This study aims to analyze the challenges faced in the implementation of Islamic Religious Education for Indonesian diaspora students and to identify the strategies employed to address these challenges. The study adopted a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis involving teachers, students, and school administrators. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while triangulation was employed to ensure the trustworthiness of the findings. The results reveal that the major challenges in IRE learning include disparities in students' prior religious knowledge, limited instructional time, insufficient parental support due to work commitments, inadequate learning facilities, and the influence of the social environment and digital technology. To address these challenges, teachers implemented adaptive learning strategies, utilized digital learning media, provided gradual and individualized guidance, and strengthened communication with parents. The study concludes that the successful implementation of Islamic Religious Education for Indonesian diaspora students requires strong collaboration among schools, families, and the surrounding community to achieve the intended educational objectives effectively.

Abstract

The sustainability of education in the digital era requires continuous improvement in teachers’ digital competencies supported by effective school leadership. This study aims to examine the management practices of school principals in enhancing the digital competence of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers through a case study at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) 7 and MIN 10 Banda Aceh, Indonesia. A mixed-methods approach with a descriptive design was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative data. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews involving the principals and all teachers engaged in digital learning at both schools, totaling ten participants. The findings reveal that the principals systematically planned and implemented annual programs to strengthen teachers’ digital competence, including digital skills training, educational seminars, teacher workshops, Digital Teacher Working Group (Kelompok Kerja Guru/KKG) activities, reward systems for outstanding teachers, and expanded access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources. Continuous monitoring and evaluation ensured that these programs were implemented effectively according to the annual plans. However, implementation faced challenges related to limited financial resources and inadequate educational facilities and technological infrastructure. The study highlights the crucial role of school principals in fostering teachers’ digital competence and supporting sustainable digital transformation in Islamic primary education.
