Abstract

English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) method bloomed widely in the educational context as the impact of advanced globalization. Pros and cons emerge worldwide toward the implementation of this teaching method. A study of EMI on the primary level becomes interesting since the teachers are faced with double challenges. While teaching young learners with their unique characteristics is a big challenge, they are required to teach the learners using an unfamiliar language which is English. Therefore, a descriptive-qualitative study was conducted to uncover this issue. Literature review, observation, and interviews with some teachers of international standard primary schools in Indonesia were employed to obtain comprehensive data on this issue. The result revealed many challenges and opportunities in the implementation of EMI at the primary level. This study suggests a better policy in the educational system shading the implementation of EMI in Indonesia and many supports are still needed.

Abstract

English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is a term used for learning activities where English is used as the main language. This approach is widely adopted by bilingual schools as it allows learners to learn both their first and second language at the same time. While EMI has many advantages, the impact of this method on children's first and second language acquisition remains largely unknown. Therefore, through a case study, this research aims to examine the effect of EMI on children's first and second language acquisition in bilingual schools. This research will be conducted in a school that applies EMI in the Purwokerto area, namely Tiga Bahasa Putera Harapan School, with a sample of grade 3 students and teachers as respondents. This sample is randomly selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data for this study will be obtained through observations, speaking tests in Indonesian and English, and interviews. The results of this study show that there is no significant difference between the average English score (85.47) and Indonesian score (84.76) of students taught using EMI. Despite its status as an international standard school, national values and love for the country are still instilled through various curricular and co-curricular activities. This shows that with proper management, EMI does not affect the first and second language acquisition of children attending bilingual schools. To improve children's English proficiency, English needs to be introduced early through environmental conditioning that supports the use of English in daily life.

Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is somehow challenging. They have unique characteristics such as being very active, easily getting bored and being distracted. The teachers are required to be creative in designing the lesson. Storytelling can be a powerful technique in teaching language to young learners. With the advance in digital technology, an e-storybook offers a new experience of a reading story. It offers opportunities to enjoy animations, hear and follow along with text using the read-aloud feature, and engage with interactive options to support active readers. This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of the storytelling technique using e-storybook in increasing young learners' learning engagement in English class. This study was a case study conducted in a kindergarten in Purwokerto. The data was collected through observation and interviews. The finding revealed that the students displayed higher enthusiasm during the storytelling activity. Moreover, the use of an e-storybook enabled the students re-read the story independently and actively control their reading pace to increase their understanding. The result of the study showed an increase in students' vocabulary mastery, text comprehension, and retelling skills. This study concludes that storytelling using an e-storybook is effective to improve young learners' engagement in English class. It is expected that the result of this study may give insight into teaching English to young learners practice.

Abstract

This study focuses on developing a learning medium using PowerPoint called SIAGA (Speaking Skills Games) to enhance the speaking skills in English of grade-eight deaf students at SMPLB Muhammadiyah Jombang. Considering that speaking is an important skill in communication, the research addresses the unique challenges faced by deaf students, such as delayed language development and reliance on visual learning. Utilizing R&D Method with ADDIE design, some concepts of gamification were combined with visual aids, animations, and sign language in this learning module to better respond to the needs of Deaf students. The application SIAGA was developed through consultation with experts, and then it went through validation procedures by media, language, and disability specialists. From these, the feedback about the relevance was 95% and that on media design was 79%, suggesting the need to improve the visuals, font readability, and clarity in instructions. In sum, post-implementation evaluations through student questionnaires averaged 89% regarding the effectiveness, ease of use, and motivational effect of the application. Application research in inclusive classrooms involving both deaf and hearing students would be valuable for further study of this medium.

Abstract

Student motivation has always been an obstacle within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and it continues to be a technological barrier with learners at the beginner level. This study investigates the impact of the gamified, mobile-assisted language learning application, Memrise, on students’ motivation to learn English. The study aimed to provide insight into what the effective extent of Memrise is and how it can promote learner motivation within EFL environments. This study used a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, with 28 first-year university students enrolled in a Beginner English 2 course at a university in Indonesia. Data for the study were collected using observations, structured questionnaires informed by Self-Determination Theory and Connectivism, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and using paired sample t-tests, and qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in students' motivation after the Memrise intervention, and the students reported higher autonomy, competence, and engagement than before the intervention. The additional features, including chatbot conversations, real-time feedback, and progress tracking, helped to facilitate the improved levels of motivation. The paper argues that Memrise is an effective strategy for encouraging sustainable motivation in EFL learners and contributes to the ongoing discourse on mobile learning, presenting practical implications for educators and app developers to consider as they develop increasingly engaging and learner-centered digital environments.

Abstract

This study investigates flipped learning as an emerging instructional approach that addresses the shifting learning needs of learning in the 21st century. Compared to traditional classroom pedagogy with respect to teacher-centered approach, flipped learning transforms traditional direct instruction outside the classroom online and focuses classroom time for group activities, discussions, and experiential learning. The article integrates new empirical and theoretical studies to analyze how the flipped approach results in greater autonomy, critical thinking, and motivation among students. Grounded on constructivist theory, Bloom's Taxonomy, and self-determination theory, this paper examines how flipped classrooms enhance active learning and learner-centered learning. The research concludes that flipped learning results in better academic performance if educators prepare themselves appropriately and digital technologies are made available. However, unequal digital access and learner readiness are issues that still need to be main concerns. EFL case studies also demonstrate that, in addition to promoting language acquisition, flipped learning can promote 21st-century skill acquisition such as problem-solving and collaboration. Ultimately, flipped learning presents a convincing way of redesigning education today into an even more engaging, equalitarian, and forward-looking environment.
