Abstract

English is an international language that is essential to master. However, many students experience difficulties in writing due to limited vocabulary, which affects their ability to organize ideas and express meaning accurately. This study examined the effectiveness of Quizizz in enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery and writing abilities, particularly their understanding and application of singular and plural nouns. The research adopted a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental One-Group Pre-Test–Post-Test Design, involving 35 seventh-grade students of Class VII C at SMP Negeri 37 Semarang. The data were obtained through a pre-test, Quizizz activities, a sentence-writing assessment, and a post-test. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results revealed an increase in the students’ mean score, from 89.37 in the pre-test to 99.60 in the post-test. These findings suggest that the use of Quizizz contributed positively to students’ vocabulary development and improved their ability to use singular and plural nouns appropriately in writing activities.

Abstract

Despite the growing adoption of digital technologies in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, limited empirical evidence exists on how narrative-based learning and gamified assessment can be integrated to simultaneously strengthen vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, particularly in vocational education. To address this gap, this study examined the effectiveness of integrating digital storybooks and gamified quizzes in supporting vocational high school students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. A quantitative pre-experimental study employing a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted with 30 eleventh-grade vocational students in Central Java, Indonesia. Students participated in learning activities that combined contextualized digital storybooks with gamified quizzes delivered through Wayground. Vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension were measured using a 20-item multiple-choice test administered before and after the intervention. As the data were not normally distributed, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was employed to compare students' pretest and posttest scores. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement (Z = −4.810, p < .001), with the mean score increasing from 71.67 to 91.83, while all participants demonstrated positive learning gains without negative ranks or ties. These findings indicate that integrating contextualized narrative reading with gamified formative assessment promotes meaningful learning by encouraging active engagement, repeated vocabulary exposure, immediate feedback, and deeper text comprehension. The study contributes empirical evidence supporting the pedagogical value of integrating digital storybooks and gamified quizzes as an effective instructional approach for strengthening English reading instruction in vocational EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study examined the translation techniques used to convey political satire in Animal Farm by George Orwell into Indonesian. The research applied a qualitative descriptive approach based on Molina and Albir’s framework of translation techniques. The data consisted of satirical expressions identified in the English source text and their Indonesian translation by Bakdi Soemanto. The analysis showed that several techniques are used in translating political satire, with literal translation often used to maintain the original meaning and stylistic features of the source text, while modulation helps adjust expressions so that they sound more natural in Indonesian. Other techniques, such as transportation and adaptation, are also found but occur less frequently. The findings suggested that the translator attempts to preserve the satirical tone and ideological criticism embedded in the original text while ensuring that the translation remains clear and accessible for Indonesian readers. This study contributed to translation studies by highlighting how different translation techniques can influence the transfer of satire and ideological meaning across languages.
