Abstract

Counselor candidates with high cultural awareness will be able to make new friends, develop good interpersonal skills, face stereotypes and prejudices about other cultures, create harmony between groups, and be more adaptive in a multicultural world. Regarding this issue, the present research strived for increasing cultural awareness in counselor candidates by implementing group counseling through a humanistic approach, a self-disclosure technique and a behavioral approach named modeling technique. It was a quantitative experimental study in the form of a two-factor pretest-multiple posttest control design. 30 research subjects were divided equally in the control group, the experimental group with a self-disclosure technique and the experimental group with a modeling technique. The subject data were collected using a culture awareness scale and analyzed using the repeated-measures mixed ANOVA test. It was found that the implementation of group counseling with the self-disclosure and modeling techniques was effective in increasing the cultural awareness of Guidance and Counseling students at UIN Salatiga. It is recommended that counselors use the same treatment to increase their cultural awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyse the ideal character of indigenous counsellors in Indonesia based on moral and spiritual teachings in Serat Wedhatama. Gadamer's hermeneutic approach is used to explore the deep meaning of the Serat Wedhatama text and contextualize it within the framework of modern guidance and counseling. The primary source of Serat Wedhatama was analysed using a qualitative approach, focusing on the reduction process, data presentation, and conclusions. The Miles and Huberman approach was used in the data reduction and presentation process, which allows the identification of the ideal counsellor character based on Serat Wedhatama. The results of the research, based on the analysis of the Serat Wedhatama text, indicate that Characters such as humility, patience, perseverance, compassion, self-awareness, caution, surrender to God, and remembering the afterlife are identified as important attributes of indigenous counsellors. These findings provide a significant contribution to counselling practice in Indonesia, especially in developing a multicultural counselling model that is more relevant to the local cultural context and spiritual values. By combining traditional principles with a modern approach, this study helps build a more holistic and morally grounded counselling model. This research enriches the literature on multicultural guidance and counselling, while offering an alternative indigenous approach that is more appropriate to Indonesian society. Keywords: indigenous counsellor, serat wedhatama, guidance and counselling, gadamer's hermeneutics, spiritual values

Abstract

Bullying is a harmful behavior that intimidates and hurts other people. This research attempted to test the effectiveness of rational-emotive behavior group counseling with cognitive restructuring and role-playing techniques to reduce bullying behavior at one of the State Vocational Schools or SMK Negeri in Sampit. Experimental research with a two-factor Pre-test-Multiple post-test control design was employed in this investigation. Three groups were involved in the sampling process, each consisting of 8 tenth graders indicated to have high levels of bullying behavior. Students’ bullying behavior was measured using a bullying behavior scale based on Dupper's (2013) theory, consisting of 30 items measuring six bullying behaviors and being analyzed using the repeated mix ANOVA test. According to the findings, applying cognitive restructuring and role-playing techniques effectively reduced bullying behavior in students. It is recommended that counselors apply rational-emotive behavior group counseling with cognitive restructuring techniques and role-playing techniques to cope with students' bullying behavior.

Abstract

Academic engagement holds important and strategic potential to predict students’ performance progress in carrying out academic tasks and affect their achievement at school. Such an issue motivated the present research to analyze the effect of self-regulation and social support on students' academic engagement through academic buoyancy at the Junior High School (SMP Penggerak) in Surabaya City. A total of 365 samples were selected using a proportional stratified random sampling technique from a total population of 4,170. The self-regulation, social support, academic engagement, and academic buoyancy scales were used to collect their data. The findings suggest that self-regulation and social support could predict academic engagement and buoyancy. Academic engagement was fully mediated between self-regulation and academic buoyancy. Meanwhile, academic engagement was partially mediated by social support and academic buoyancy. Further implications of this research are reviewed in the discussion.

Abstract

Low social interaction skills and empathy can potentially raise problems in students. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the effectiveness of behavioral group counseling with a modeling technique to improve students' social interaction skills and empathy at MAN 1 Palu. It used a pretest-posttest control group design in an experiment. In sampling, this research used a purposive sampling technique, while the data collection was done using the social interaction ability scale and empathy scale. Following the data collection, hypothesis testing was carried out based on the Wilcoxon sign rank test, the Mann Whitney test and the N-gain score test. According to the Wilcoxon sign rank test and Mann Whitney analysis, there was an increase in social interaction skills and empathy in the modeling group, while in the control group was no. It has proved that the behavioral group counseling with a modeling technique has been able to improve the social interaction skills and empathy of MAN 1 Palu students. Further research implications are discussed in the discussion section.
