Abstract

Mass media plays an important role in shaping public perceptions, including perceptions of disability. Unfortunately, representations of disability in the media are still plagued by stigmas and stereotypes. This study aims to examine how self-acceptance among people with disabilities is represented in the Last Twilight series through Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. The theories and concepts used as reference sources include the television series as mass communication media, Stuart Hall’s representation, and the self-acceptance of people with disabilities. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis method and is complemented by data triangulation through interviews with expert informants to validate the findings data. The results show that the Last Twilight series represents self-acceptance as a dynamic and gradual process. The series also displays two contrasting tendencies. On the one hand, people with disabilities are depicted with pity and must be protected, while on the other hand, they are portrayed more positively through their independence. Moreover, the role of a social environment that empowers people with disabilities is crucial in the process of self-acceptance. Representations of this kind can educate the public and foster greater concern for people with disabilities—without resorting to pity or sympathy—while instilling the understanding that they, too, are capable of living independent and productive lives, just like everyone else. Thus, this representation demonstrates social construction in shaping the meaning of disability.

Abstract

Self-confidence is a critical psychological aspect for Generation Z, who often face social comparison pressures due to social media exposure. As a positive counter-narrative, BTS initiated the “LOVE MYSELF” social campaign to promote self-acceptance. This research aims to analyze the formation of self-confidence among Generation Z BTS fans (ARMY) through the interpretation of the campaign's messages. This study utilizes George Herbert Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism Theory, focusing on the dynamics of Mind, Self, and Society. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed to explore the subjective experiences of six informants through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation. The results indicate that the campaign serves as a significant symbol that transforms the fans' Mind from pessimistic to affirmative thinking. In the Self dimension, a reconstruction of self-concept occurs through the acceptance of flaws and the establishment of personal boundaries. Furthermore, the ARMY community functions as a Society that provides a supportive environment and emotional validation. In conclusion, the integration of symbol interpretation, internal reflection, and social interaction within the community proves effective in building Generation Z's self-confidence.

Abstract

Cross-cultural film adaptations have become one of the most intriguing phenomena in the Indonesian film industry. One such example is the Indonesian version of A Business Proposal, adapted from a popular Korean drama. This adaptation has captured the public’s attention due to both the popularity of the original version and audience expectations regarding the quality of the local adaptation. The film has sparked debate regarding the appropriateness of the plot, changes to the characters, and the Indonesian industry’s success in adapting global narratives to a local context. This study aims to understand how Indonesian audiences assign meaning to, interpret, and respond to cultural representations and characters in such adapted films. Utilizing Stuart Hall’s reception theory (dominant–negotiated–oppositional) and the concept of cultural representation in film adaptations, this research employs a qualitative approach and phenomenological methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. The study reveals that audience reception is diverse. Some view the cultural adaptations in the film as questionable; some negotiate the quality of the adaptation by considering the Indonesian context; while others reject it because they feel the film lacks the character depth and emotional essence of the original version. Thus, this study demonstrates that the adaptation process not only transfers the plot but also involves the negotiation of cultural values, audience expectations, and the construction of local identity in the media.
