Abstract

Indigenous medicinal plant knowledge constitutes a crucial component of ecolinguistic systems, as it is embedded in linguistic expressions that reflect ecological relationships, healing practices, and cultural values. However, this knowledge is increasingly threatened by language shift and insufficient documentation, particularly within low-resource indigenous communities. This study develops an AI-based ecolinguistic framework to systematically document and represent Nias ethnomedicinal knowledge by integrating ethnobotanical field data with culturally grounded artificial intelligence approaches. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with traditional Nias healers, resulting in the identification of fifteen commonly used medicinal plant species. To assess cultural salience and communal consensus, the study applied the Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) index. The quantitative findings reveal an uneven distribution of cultural prominence among the documented species. Notably, Gundre and Mbulu Nazalöu emerged as the most frequently cited plants (FC = 14; RFC = 0.93 each), indicating their central role within the Nias ethnomedical knowledge system. The documented knowledge was subsequently structured using a Knowledge Graph model and enhanced through a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture to enable contextualized, culturally sensitive knowledge representation. The proposed framework demonstrates how artificial intelligence can support the preservation, organization, and revitalization of endangered indigenous medicinal knowledge while maintaining its ecolinguistic integrity.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning behind verbal, non-verbal sign, and ideological contained in advertisements written in Balinese-language. This study applied a critical descriptive approach. Eleven Balinese-language advertisements are the study data obtained from the field-observation and analyzed qualitatively by using semiotics, semantics and ideology theories. The results showed that the emergence of grammatical adjective category jaen dominated all culinary data used in this study. Jaen (delicious) is a taste to express food culinary production. There are two advertisements that use the word Jaen metaphorically, such as an expression for orgasmic activity in sexual intercourse, which is contextually understandable. Furthermore, certain verbs used are quite varied and contained a different ideology. Based on the sentence structure, all the study samples used simple sentences and an imperative sentence. There is no rhetorical device in the whole advertisements, but the ideology that stands out is to prioritize local content to persuade consumers.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the code mixings used in social media, especially the types and the reasons of using them.  This research used qualitative method, in which the data were analyzed by the theory of code mixing by Muysken (2000) to describe the types of code mixing, and the theory of Nababan (1984) to describe the reasons for using code mixing. The data were collected from Warren Hue in Volix Media Youtube Channel. This research was done by applying three steps, 1) collecting the data by watching the video, 2) transcribing the video conversation to find the utterance where the code mixing occurs, 3) sorting the data and analyzing them based on the theories applied. The results shows that there were three types of code mixing found, which were insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. It was also found that there were three reasons for using code mixing, which were 1) for fun or informal situation, 2) the absences for inappropriate expressions, and 3) for showing language skills.
