Abstract

Abstract: Nowadays, e-mail is one of general ways to communicate or to send messages between students and lecturer in academic purposes. This study aims to find out the ability of the English Department students of FKIP Universitas Riau in writing an e-mail to the lecturer. This study used the second semester students in academic year 2018/2019 as the population. Simple random sampling used to take the sample. The sample of this study was 37 students. Writing test used for the instrument. Data collected by received 37 e-mails written by the students. The data included descriptive quantitative method. From the data analysis, it was found that the ability of second semester students of the English Department FKIP Universitas Riau was in good level. The score of each aspects of e-mail writing was be analyzed of this study. The high score are content/idea and vocabulary. The low score are subject line, mechanics and grammar. Therefore, the students are expected to study and practice more how to write an e-mail to the lecturer with concerning some e-mail format, subject line, format and structure, mechanics, content/idea, grammar and vocabulary.Key Words: Ability, Writing, E-Mail.

Abstract

Abstract : This research is aimed to find out the students’ perception on the use of L1 in English classes by teachers and students at SMAN 2 Pekanbaru in the academic year 2017/2018. This is a survey research. The participants answered questions administered through questionnaire which consisted of 34 questions. The population of this research is 772 students of SMAN 2 Pekanbaru. The sample is 34 students of X IPS 3 class, 34 students of XI IPS 3 class, and 38 students of XII MIPA 1 class. The total is 106 students as the sample. The data of this research were collected by giving questionnaire to the students which then was measured on a Likert scale on scale of 1-5. The results of data analysis showed that the teacher often use English during class and still include Bahasa Indonesia as L1 in a limited portion. The students agree about the inclusion of L1 by teachers when necessary. The students also agree if they are allowed to use Bahasa Indonesia during class. The inclusion of L1 help the students learn more motivated and enjoyable. It was found that there is an improvement in the students’ English skill when English is the language mostly used during class. The students agree that the more they practice using English, the more their English improved.Keywords: Perception, Survey Research, L1

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the anxiety level of XI MIPA 4 students of SMA N 3 Mandau in speaking english as foreign language. The subjects of this study were XI MIPA 4 students of SMA N 3 Mandau in the academic year 2020/2021. 34 students employed in this study used The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale questionnaire, developedibyiHorwitzietial.i(1986). Iticonsists of 30 items with 5 points Likert-Scale. The results of the data analysis showed that there were 34 students in class XI MIPA4 of SMAN 3 Mandau whoihadidifferentilevelsiofianxietyiinispeakingiskill. (1) Thereiwere 5istudents (16%) whoiexperience “VeryiAnxious” level, (2) Thereiwere 12 students (29%) who experience “Anxious” level, it means most of XI MIPA 4 students in SMAN 3 Mandau felt Anxious in speaking English, (3) There were 7 students (23%) who experience “Mildly Anxious” level, (4) There were also 7 students (23%) who experience “Relaxed” level, (5) There were 3 students (9%) who experience “Very Relaxed” level in this researchKey Words: Analysis, Anxiety Level, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to discover the ability level of the third year students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending news item texts. The population of this research was all of the third year students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru, academic year 2019/2020. The numbers of sample were 25 students which were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by means reading comprehension test in the form of multiple choices by giving 8 news item texts with 40 multiple choice items. The results of the data analysis showes that the mean of the students’ score in compreheneding news item texts is 70.88. It can be concluded that the ability of the third year students of MAN 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending news item texts is in good level. Based on the result of the students’ scores in each of reading comprehension component, the lowest component of reading comprehension is the ability in finding the meaning of vocabulary 52.00 and the highest one is the ability in finding inferences 80.00.Key Words: Study, Ability, News Item Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This Pre-experimental research aims to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using Two Stay Two Stay Strategy on reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kandis. The sample of this research is 35 students of XI IPA 1 chosen by cluster random sampling. To measure the students’ reading comprehension level, pre-test and post-test in form of recount text are given before and after treatment. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 52.27 and the mean score of post-test is 79.92. It means the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. In addition, the value of t-obs is higher than t-table (11.66>2.03). Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kandis.Key Words: Effect, Two Stay Two Stray Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Recount Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect using Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 8 Pekanbaru. The research design was a re-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was class IX-3 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. In order to collect the data, a pre-test and post-test were administered and then the data were statistically analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result showed that the mean score of the post-test was higher than the mean score of the pre-test (51.43>47.39). The value of t-test was 11.528 while the value of t-table in significance level 5% df = 32 was 2.037. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 8 Pekanbaru.Key Words: Picture-Cued Storytelling Technique, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: The aims of this study are intended to find out the types of grammatical errors are made by the tenth grade students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019 in writing recount texts. The error collected was classified based on Corder’s theory. This research used a descriptive method. The participants of this research were 65 students of class X MIPA 3 and class X IPS 6 of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The students were selected to be the sample using cluster sampling technique. The writer collected the data by using a writing test with the topic “unforgettable Experience. This research showed that the students made errors into four types: error of omission, error of addition, error of selection and error of ordering. The research findings provide the most common types of errors made by the students was error of selection with the number of error was 363 or 67%. Moreover, it is followed by error of omission with the number of error 93 or 17.2%, error of addition with the number 62 or 11.40%, and whereas, for error of ordering only took 24 or 4.40%. The errors performed by the students of tenth grade of SMAN12 Pekanbaru were caused by the influence of the first language and the second language.Key Words: Error, Error Analysis, writing, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Word Cluster teaching technique on the ability of the second students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Lesung in comprehending descriptive texts. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 3 classes in the second year. Class VIII B in the second semester of academic year 2018/2019 that consist of 30 students are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of the test is in the form of multiple choices which consist of 40 items about descriptive texts. To collect the needed data the treatments were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 57.50 and the mean score of the post-test is 63.41. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (3.088>2.045). The alternative hypothesis (HI) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of Word Cluster teaching technique on the reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Lesung. The implication of this finding is beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching reading.Key Words: Effect, Word Cluster, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their English learning achievement of the first grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Khairul Ummah. The researcher used a descriptive quantitative method as the data approach. The sample of this research was the 57 students in class X IPA 1 and X IPS 2. The students’ motivation score was obtained from the questionnaire adapted from Gardner’s AMTB (Attitude/Motivation Test Battery) consist of 30 questions. Data on students’ English learning achievement acquire from the score of the final semester exam from the English teacher. As the result, the students’ motivation in learning English was at average level and students ‘ motivation in learning English is mostly intrinsic motivation. And for students’ English learning achievement is classified as enough level. Lastly, the correlation coefficient is 0.748, and it can be concluded that there is highly significant and positive correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their English learning achievement at Madrasah Aliyah Khairul Ummah. With 0.5595 as the coefficient of determination, it can be deduced that the students’ motivation contributes about fifty-six percent to their English learning achievement, leaving the other fourty-four percent by the other factors.Key Words: Correlation, Students’ Motivation , English Learning Achievement

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed at finding out the ability of using question tags by the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The population of this research was the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Univeristas Riau. The number of the sample was 37 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice test items with 50 questions. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability: very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. The finding of this study tells that there are 12 students (32,43%) are in excellent level, 21 students (56,75%) are good in level, 3 students (8,10%)are in mediocre level and 1 student (2,70%) is in poor level. Based on the finding of the research, it was found that the students’ ability of using question tags by the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau was in good level with the mean score was 72. The implication of this research is that the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Univeritas Riau have a good ability in using question tags.Key Words: Students’ ability, Study, Question Tags
