For this purpose the 2019 USU TALENTA Community Service Team was conducted directly in the field with community involvement and university lecturers from the University of North Sumatra. The training is carried out with recycling activities and enhancing the 3R waste treatment creativity skills in basic education. Abstract

In the kindergarten education program (Taman Kanak-kanak; TK), Medan Zahira School as a healthy school partner, runs an activity based on the formation of healthy behavior and culture in terms of good eating habits. In its implementation, this education is carried out every day with lunch together in class by all students and is something that requires good, orderly, efficient and healthy food management. Low understanding of room design arrangements and healthy kitchen utensils as well as a lack of manuals for improving healthy kitchen facilities for kindergartens and the limited space available for school kitchen facilities that require creativity in arranging a healthy school kitchen arrangement. In addition, it is necessary to develop creativity for teachers in arranging school kitchen facilities which is a partner problem. Through the 2020 TALENTA USU Community Service Program, training on healthy kitchen design and capacity building for teachers on knowledge and skills in healthy kitchens is additional knowledge for educators / teachers in understanding, compiling manuals, designing healthy kitchen models through This activity begins with the introduction and understanding of work activities in the kitchen for kindergarten students' lunch preparations as the basis for preparing a healthy school kitchen layout plan.

Abstract

The area around the Universitas Sumatera Utara Campus, Medan city, is an area that is often hit by floods, especially when there is quite heavy rain with a fairly long duration. Based on initial observations, it can be said that this is due to the drainage channel being unable to accommodate the high rainwater discharge. To overcome this, the 2021 USU TALENTA Community Service Program offered a solution by creating a sustainable drainage system that is environmentally insight. The solution starts with the smallest thing that each household in the affected area can do, namely through making biopori holes. In addition to biopori, another solution taken is through the construction of infiltration wells and groundwater tanks. Conducted training and simulation activities on these three solutions of environmentally sustainable drainage systems. It is hoped that it will gradually reduce water runoff directly into the city drainage, but the water can be partially absorbed into the ground first, to reduce standing water which can eventually cause flooding.

Abstract

The development of Medan City is challenged by unplanned growth that triggers the phenomenon of urban sprawl, especially in the commercial area corridor of Jalan Pattimura. The change of residential functions into commercial areas triggers various problems such as congestion, decreased quality of the visual environment, crowding, and degradation of the vitality of the area. This study aims to formulate a humanist pedestrian arrangement model in the corridor with a smart growth approach and community participation as a local force (genius loci). This research prioritizes the concept of linkage, both visually, structurally, and collectively, in redesigning pedestrian space. By promoting local wisdom as the basis for revitalization, the results of this study are expected to guide public policy based on community development in the management of sustainable commercial areas in Medan City. Abstract

This study explores a pedestrian arrangement model in the commercial corridor of Dr. Mansur Street, Medan City, which exhibits characteristics of urban sprawl through a strip development pattern. The research seeks to answer the question: How can pedestrian infrastructure be arranged to improve spatial connectivity, social interaction, and place identity in commercial areas affected by urban sprawl? The approach refers to visual, structural, and collective linkage theories to design connected pedestrian spaces that reflect the local character. The spatial arrangement focuses on forming a street space that functions like an urban square, highlighting local elements and everyday community activities to strengthen the identity of the area. In line with the Strategic Plan of Universitas Sumatera Utara, which promotes the value of local wisdom, this research contributes to the development of planning strategies based on local values. The results show that the Dr. Mansur corridor has strong potential to serve as a social space that supports community interaction and enhances the quality of the urban environment. The proposed design applies the principles of smart growth, which integrates social, cultural, environmental, and local wisdom aspects in a holistic way. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for city governments and policymakers in designing public spaces that are adaptive to urban change and support community-based development.
