Abstract

Tofu is a source of vegetable protein that has high nutritional value for Indonesian Tofu, which is made from soybeans, produces waste from production, one of which is tofu dregs which cannot be stored for long and can pollute the environment. In general, the protein content in tofu dregs is still high, while until now its use is still relatively simple, namely only as animal feed. The content of tofu dregs which is still high in nutrition needs to be optimized for its use as an alternative functional food by processing it into tofu dregs flour, where in 100% tofu dregs flour contains 66.24% carbohydrates, 17.72% protein, 3.23% crude fiber, and 2.62% fat. However, the lack of knowledge about tofu dregs management, knowledge about nutrition and the benefits of tofu dregs, as well as the lack of innovation that can be applied from tofu dregs, causes most of the tofu manufacturing entrepreneurs to still consider the economic value of tofu dregs to be low. The solutions that have been provided include (1) Counseling on the nutritional content that is still present in tofu dregs (2) Socialization on methods that can be applied to process tofu dregs into flour and the benefits of tofu dregs flour. The result of this service activity is that partners get additional knowledge about the management of tofu dregs into high-fiber and low-fat food flour.

Abstract

Essential oil is compounds that contained in plants and have many benefits. Basil is an aromatic plant that can produce essential oils. Essential oils can be extracted from basil leaves using Microwave Assisted Hydrodistillation (MAHD) method. To determine the efficiency of the MAHD method, it’s necessary to study the kinetics of the extraction method. It’s because kinetic studies can be used to identify the optimal point in the process where the highest efficiency is obtained, so the extraction process can be optimized. The aim of this research is to evaluate the suitable kinetic model for the basil leaf extraction process using the MAHD method. This extraction using 100 grams of basil leaves and 200mL aquadest, heated at various microwave power 150W, 300W, and 450W. The extractions were carried out for 70 minutes with 10 min intervals. The results showed that the largest oil yield was obtained when using 450W power, which was 0.190 grams. Based on the experimental data obtained, the most suitable kinetic model is second-order model. This can be analyzed from the highest R2 (0.9946 – 0.9999) and the lowest RMSE (0.0062 – 0.0349). Increasing the irradiation power will affect the extraction rate and parameter values of each kinetic model.

Abstract

Ulva sp. is a green alga commonly found in Indonesian waters. It contains approximately 60% carbohydrates, 10–47% protein, and 1–3% lipids. This study aimed to determine the optimum conditions for lipid extraction from Ulva sp. A pre-treatment step was carried out by adding a Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) and distilled water. The DES used was a mixture of zinc chloride and urea in a 1:2 molar ratio. The sample was then mixed with a chloroform-methanol solvent (2:1 v/v) and subjected to Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE). The variables investigated in this study included microwave power (150, 300, and 450 W), extraction time (10, 15, and 20 min), and solvent volume (45, 60, and 75 mL). The organic phase obtained from the extraction process was separated and evaporated to determine the lipid yield. The highest yield, 15.8%, was achieved under conditions of 20 min extraction time, 75 mL solvent volume, and 300 W of power. GC-MS analysis of the highest-yield sample revealed the presence of fatty acids including palmitic acid, oleic acid, and palmitoleic acid. This optimized method supports future applications in biodiesel production and green extraction processes for algae-based bioresources.

Abstract

AbstractThe energy crisis due to the scarcity of crude oil has caused a significant increase in the price of fuel oil and gas. To overcome this impact, the government provides LPG subsidies to people with low incomes. However, its realization is still ineffective because it is not on target, resulting in limited availability of subsidized LPG. On the other hand, biomass waste such as rice straw and cow dung which are abundant in rural areas have not been optimally utilized, even though they have great potential as renewable energy sources. This community service activity was carried out in Sumber Jeruk Village, Jember Regency, with the aim of providing a solution for utilizing biomass waste into alternative energy in the form of biogas, as well as an effort to reduce dependence on LPG. The method used in biogas production is fed-batch fermentation with the addition of EM4 as a microorganism activator. The results of the activity show that the combination of rice straw and cow dung is able to produce biogas that can be used as an alternative fuel. In addition to helping reduce organic waste, this innovation also contributes to supporting energy security at the household level. Processing biomass waste into biogas is an appropriate solution that is environmentally friendly and sustainable in overcoming the shortage of fossil fuel energy. Keywords: biogas; LPG; rice straw waste; cow manure; fed-batch fermentation

Abstract

In this research, the extraction of essential oil from fresh basil leaves using solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) and microwave hydrodistillation (MHD) methods. Several parameters influence the extraction of basil oil using the SFME method: microwave power, the ratio between the mass of raw material with a volume of distiller (F/D), material size, and length of extraction time. Besides, the components contained in basil oil and changes in oil gland conditions in basil leaves before and after being extracted were also evaluated. The optimum condition was obtained as follows: microwave power of 380 W, the ratio between the mass of raw material with a volume of distiller (F/D) of 0.1 g/mL, raw material size of intact (± 3 cm), with an extraction time of 60 min. Moreover, SFME has a shorter extraction time to produce yields than MHD methods. GC-MS analyzed the composition of basil oil, and there were 49 identified components. This study shows that the SFME method is more effective than the MHD method for the extraction of basil oil from fresh leaves based on time extraction and yield.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries that produces essential oils, a commodity that can generate foreign exchange. Therefore, essential oils receive special attention from the Indonesian government. Indonesia generates 40-50 types of plants that produce essential oils and are traded worldwide. Extraction using a microwave, with the basic mechanism of microwave heating, involves stirring polar molecules or ions that oscillate due to the influence of electric and magnetic fields, called dipolar polarization. From the results of physical analysis, citronella essential oil obtained using the Solvent FreeMicrowave Extraction (SFME) method has met the standards and quality of citronella oil based on SNI 06-3953-1995, according to the parameters of color, specific gravity, and solubility in water. 80% ethanol shows citronella oil of good quality. The results of GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis on the extraction of citronella essential oil using the Solvent Free Microwave Extraction (SFME) method obtained two components, namely citronella and geraniol, with citronellal percentages of 8.64% and 7.53%. Optimal operating conditions for extracting essential oils from citronella raw materials using the Solvent Free Microwave Extraction (SFME) method.

Abstract

Chayote (Sechium edule) is a plant from the Cucurbitaceae family that contains several vitamins, such as A, B, and C, and is often used for medicinal purposes. Based on phytochemical analysis, chayote extract contains bioactive compounds like phenolics. Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites used as cosmetic and medicinal ingredients due to their ability to reduce oxidative stress. This research uses UV-Vis spectrophotometry to determine the chayote extract's total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Chayote extract was obtained using the Ultrasonic Assisted-Extraction (UAE) method with 96% ethanol solvent. The extraction variables used were time (15, 20, and 25 minutes), amplitude (45, 65, and 85%), and solvent ratio (1:5, 1:10, and 1:15). The determination of total phenolic content was based on the Folin-Ciocalteau method. At the same time, antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH. Determining chayote extraction parameters for total phenolic content using the Response Surface Methodology with a Box-Behnken type. The optimal conditions for chayote extraction were 1.327 mg GAE/g sample for total phenolic content and 29.45% for antioxidant activity under 20 minutes of extraction time, 65% amplitude, and a 1:10 solvent ratio.

Abstract

The practical technique for membrane modification is dip coating. This study coats a PVDF hollow fiber membrane-based composite with a zeolite coating. The composite is made of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The separation capabilities and propensities of composite membranes for organic impurities were examined during water filtering. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of the findings demonstrated that the Zeolite coating was successfully deposited on the PVDF membrane. The flux recovery ratio increases from 69% to 80% while the relative flux drop decreases from 63% to 50%. A composite PVDF membrane dip-coating of Zeolite with a GA and H2SO4 ratio of 1:2 is needed to remove about 75% of humic compounds from effluent. This study's results show that adding Zeolite with a GA and H2SO4 layer can significantly improve the PVDF hollow fiber membrane's hydrophilicity, selectivity, and anti-organic fouling.
