Abstract

The Lapindo mudflow disaster in East Java Province, or also known as LUSI (LUmpur “mud”-SIdoarjo) has become spectacular longest ongoing disaster in recent memory since 2006. The utilization of volcanic Lapindo mud could be the promising solution to prevent further environmental damage. The chemical composition of Lapindo mud contained of 44.1% SiO2, 23.7% Fe2O3, 13% Al2O3, 7.02% CaO, 5.35% MoO3, 2.53% K2O, 1.84% TiO2 and 0.7% Na2O. Aluminium sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) or “alum” have been widely used as coagulation compound in water treatment, paper and textiles industry. Aluminium sulfate can be synthesized from aluminium oxide (Al2O3) from Lapindo mud with acidic solutions (H2SO4). The aim of this work was to synthesize aluminum sulfate from Lapindo mud by using extraction process. The impact of H2SO4 concentration and heating time to the production of aluminium sulfate have been investigated. The results showed that the aluminium sulfate can be synthesized from Lapindo mud by using H2SO4. Based on XRF analysis, the variation of heating time and H2SO4 concentration affect the aluminium sulfate conversion. The increasing of heating time and H2SO4 concentration directly enhance the conversion until reach the optimum condition. The optimum condition for aluminium sulfate synthesis from Lapindo mud (75.78% conversion) was found to be 90 min for heating time with H2SO4 concentration of 80%

Abstract

Methane as a light gas was generally found in natural gas which was burned freely to gain a high quality of petroleum. This action truly impacted a worst condition in nature, namely greenhouse effect. This brief review described fundamental theory of the important process in methane conversion from natural gas into value-added chemical such as syngas (CO+H2). The methane conversion reaction was commonly divided into direct and indirect reaction. The indirect reaction such as partial oxidation of methane was mostly chosen due to the intermediate product (syngas) can easily generate many raw materials of petrochemicals. This paper also described a potential catalyst to be applied which in heterogeneous type such as perovskite oxide, metal oxide and zeolite.

Abstract

Study of Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as a Novel Material for Drug Delivery. Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a novel class of porous material that has wide potential applications including in drug delivery and slow release. Its flexible structure, regular crystalline pore size, and various coordination sites are some of the advantages of supporting MOFs properties in the encapsulation of various drugs. Various methods can be used for the MOFs synthesis include nanoprecipitation, solvothermal, reverse micro emulsion, and surfactant-templated solvothermal. Both characterization for synthesized materials and profile after encapsulation can be done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD). The drug loading method consists of two categories, namely the direct incorporation of biomedical agents and post-synthesis method. Before MOFs are applied in biomedical application, activation and attachment of medicinal materials should be performed. Meanwhile, for slow release testing can be run on several conditions such as in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF), Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS), Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) and simulation using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC). In vivo and in vitro testing can also be done to determine the impact on the body of living creatures and their activity on pathogen cells. Different organic linker and metal center combinations will result in pore size, flexibility, loading capacity, drug release profiles, toxicity, and different inhibiting ability. Herein, we will discuss a brief review of the structure and design of MOFs, bio-MOFs, nano-bio MOFs, synthesis, drug loading and release strategies for applications in biomedicine. Furthermore, there will be some examples of applications that have been done so far, e.g. some types of MOFs that have been encapsulated with some medicinal materials, such as 5-fluorouracil, ibuprofen, doxorubicin, and reviewed its release time and interaction with computational modeling.

Abstract

The simple organic waste processing in this journal is a follow-up to the previous activities. By using a concise method that did not take up land, the people of Gebang Putih Village have been able to process simple organic waste into ready-to-use compost. The method used in making ready-to-use compost was to stack brown and green waste in layers and then doused it with two variations of bio-activators, i.e., leri water (rice washing water) and EM4. After the 18th day, the resulting fertilizer showed dry characteristics, odorless, and had a neutral pH. An interesting result in this study was that the compost with the addition of leri water (pH=7) began to decompose on the 9th day. However, in the compost with the addition of EM4, on the 6th day, the compost had decomposed evenly. However, the final results of the compost produced proved that leri water was quite effective as an alternative bio-activator, a substitute for EM4.

Abstract

XYZ Village is an industrial village that produces woven fabrics. Failure in the production process is something that must be traced to the cause so that it can be used as a basis for improving product quality. Total Quality Management (TQM) is an approach to running a business that tries to maximize the competitiveness of an organization through continuous improvement of products, services, people, processes, and the environment. This study was conducted to identify potential causes of failure and improve the quality of woven fabrics in the weaving process in XYZ Village with the TQM method approach. Based on the calculations that have been done, it was found that there are two valid variables and two other invalid variables because the value of r-count > r-table, namely the variable color is less bright and the color is mixed. Then the main factors that cause the quality of woven fabrics to decrease and result in production failures on woven fabrics are inappropriate battens and also color spots on woven fabrics.
