Abstract

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) or what is known as congek by the local communities, is an ear disease that often occurs in developing countries. Chronic middle ear infection is accompanied by perforation of the tympanic membrane and fluid in the form of watery, clear, thick, even pus that comes out continuously or occurs for 2 months or more. The purpose of this riset was to analyze the relationship between the area of tympanic membrane perforation and hearing threshold value of CSOM patients at RSU Kaliwates Jember. This research is an observational analytic study with a cross sectional approach using secondary data recorded in the medical records of Kaliwates Hospital for 2019-2020. Data analysis using IBM SPSS Pearson test. This study used 15 ears from 12 CSOM patients obtained by a total sampling methode according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the analysis, it was found that there was a positive relationship between the area of the tympanic membrane perforation and hearing threshold value (p-value = 0.004) and had a strong degree of correlation (correlation coefficient value was 0.654).

Abstract

Follow up dilakukan setelah 2 minggu. DOI : 10.35990/mk.v5n3.p321-331

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Mefenamic acid can cause gastritis. Glutathione is one of the oxidative stress defense mechanisms and nutrient supplementation containing high antioxidants. Peel of shallot (Allium cepa var. Ascalonicum) contains higher antioxidant compounds and may increase glutathione levels. This study aimed to analyze the effect of shallot peel extract supplementation on gastric glutathione (GSH) levels in gastritis rats model. Methods: This was an experimental study using 24 male Wistar rats which were divided into 4 groups, namely  group K0 (given 2 ml of aquadest for 14 days); group K1 (given mefenamic acid 23.25 mg/day for the first 7 days, then Na-CMC 2 ml/day for the next 7 days), group P1 and P2 (given mefenamic acid 23.25 mg/day for the first 7 days, then given shallot peel extract for the next 7 days at dose of 600 mg/kgBW/day or 1200 mg/kgBW/day). Gastric GSH levels were determined by the Ellman method. The data was analyzed by ANOVA and post hoc test. Results: The shallot peel extract supplementation at a dose of 600 mg/kgBW and 1200 mg/kgBW significantly increased gastric GSH levels in gastritis rats (p<0.05), however, GSH levels did not reach normal conditions. Linear regression analysis showed an R coefficient of 0.751.Conclusion: Shallot peel extract supplementation increases gastric GSH levels in gastritis rats model in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting an effective dose of shallot peel extract. Further study to develop shallot peel extract into phytopharmaca is imperative.

Abstract

Increased use of pesticides can have detrimental health consequences, one of which is chronic neurotoxicity. The symptoms include degenerative and neurobehavioral issues. Chronic neurotoxicity occurs through oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurotransmitter disturbances. This study aimed to determine chronic neurotoxicity and test malondialdehyde and cholinesterase levels as neurotoxicity biomarkers among agricultural workers in Wuluhan, Jember, Indonesia. The 60-person research sample was divided into two groups: agricultural and non-agricultural workers. The interview utilized a mini-mental score examination, Chan's questionnaire, and the Patient Health Questionnaire to analyze the cognitive impairment, Parkinsonism, and depressive symptoms. The examination of serum malondialdehyde levels was performed using the TBARS method and cholinesterase levels by photometric kinetic method at a biochemistry laboratory from October to November 2022. Results showed cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms in agricultural workers, as well as high levels of malondialdehyde and low cholinesterase levels. This study concludes the presence of chronic pesticide neurotoxicity among agricultural workers in Jember, Indonesia, and that malondialdehyde and cholinesterase levels might serve as biomarkers of pesticide-induced neurotoxicity.
