Abstract

During 2014-2016, the United Development Party (PPP) experienced the most severe and prolonged internal fragmentation in its history. Since the beginning of 2014, the emergence of the twin Board of the Central Committee cemented the fragmentation that had occurred. Some people relate this phenomenon to the interests of the elites. However, the interest of the elites itself is something inevitable and in many cases is not necessarily the cause for prolonged fragmentation. The aim of this article, therefore, is to explain the factors that lead to the internal fragmentation. This article regards three main root-causes of the problem, namely (1) weak leadership, in particular the absence of a strong patron, which facilitates cadres’ unrestricted freedom of action and makes them unable to maintain the Party unity, (2) the lack of an ideological bond that leads to the growth of exclusive-pragmatism, and (3) external factors, namely the government and coalition partners that are eager to preserve each conflicting group’s position.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i1.2808

Abstract

Circulating debates concerning the intense influence of direct local election towards money politics remains ongoing among Indonesian scholars. This article demonstrates several aspects indicating the relationship between direct local election (Pilkada) and money politics. In more specific rhetoric, current practices in money politics tend to occur before and during the election day, engaging political actors, voters, and soaring capital. As the novelty of this article, the findings reveal that the likelihood of money politics would most occur within the environment where the existing regulation encourages corruption. Hence, people have less concern to support a fair election, inevitably due to the weak law enforcement, exacerbated by disengagement of political parties.

Abstract

Several qualitative studies on party institutionalization done previously in Indonesia have not provided measurement instruments to asses the degree of party institutionalization comprehensively. The purpose of this study is to complement and strengthen the analysis of party institutionalization, which has been analyzed before. By using quantitative approach with the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) technique, the authors elaborated the four dimensions of party institutionalization by Randall and Svasand into several sub dimensions-Subsub dimension, variable and indicators which are relevant to Indonesia political parties. The authors then validated the instrument constructed by content validity method using expert judgement which is still on going. Therefore, as the preliminary study, the instrument provided here is still need further improvement by forming a construct that will perfect the entire CFA method and comprehensively produce the whole instrument of political party institutionalization index.

Abstract

The phenomenon of Western democracy as an ideal political system, has been continuously debatable among Muslims. Muslim societies respond to Western democracy with three groups of attitudes, namely acceptance (“pro”), rejection (contra, “con”) and critical accommodation. The main argument of the contra camp is the rejection of secularism as the main characteristic of Western democracy. On the other hand, the pro and critical accommodative camps consider democracy to achieve Islamic goals. One of the prominent Indonesian thinkers in the critical accommodative camp was Hamka or Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah. Hamka (1908–1981), one of the leading Islamic intellectuals in Indonesia in the modern era, was known for his monumental work, Tafsir Al Azhar. Hamka was well-known as an Indonesian ulama (cleric), Muhammadiyah activist, and Masyumi Party politician who was directly involved in the ideological debates in the Constituent Assembly in Bandung (1956–1959). This paper presents a descriptive-analytical research report conducted in 2015–2019. This aims to explain Hamka’s view of democracy through Islamic perspective. Hamka believes that democracy is the way to achieve Islamic goals. Tauhid and shura are the basis of Hamka’s thoughts about democracy. In contrast to secular Western democracy, Hamka coined the Islamic concept of democracy, which was named “Taqwa Democracy”.

Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the motives, goals, and mobilizing actors of the Gezi Park protests in Turkey in 2013 and the Aksi Bela Islam (ABI-Islamic defenders’ action) protests in Indonesia in 2016. The study finds that while both protests have strong Islamic historical roots, their underlying motives are significantly different. The Gezi Park protests were driven by government policies regarding the relocation of the park for commercial purposes, whereas the IDF protests were triggered by a statement made by the former Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, which was deemed blasphemous to Islam. Both movements share a common mobilizing factor, including the construction of easily understandable narratives for the masses. The ABI amplified public anger by emphasizing the importance of defending Islamic theological values that had been insulted, calling for collective prayer with prominent religious leaders as its key actors. On the other hand, the Gezi Park protests amplified public anger by voicing resistance against state brutality.

Abstract

This article examines the emergence of the New Direction of Indonesia Movement (Garbi) as a result of factionalisation within the Prosperous Justice Party (Partai Keadilan Sejahtera, PKS). This study argues that a number of interconnected factors contributed to the emergence of Garbi, implying that factionalisation in political parties requires multifactor analysis rather than a single factor. This study employs qualitative data gathered through in-depth interviews with central figures in PKS and Garbi. Secondary data is gathered by analysing and reviewing scholarly sources. The study finds two factors for the emergence of Garbi: disagreements over ideological interpretation and uncompromising leadership practices. However, the findings of this study contradict a third factor, which is the absence of an effective conflict resolution process. PKS, as a cadre party, has a regeneration mechanism for dispute resolution, yet it serves as a conduit for the spread of factionalisation until the emergence of Garbi.

Abstract

This article proposed the term moderate fundamentalism, as a tool in understanding the defining characteristic of the PKS. In short, the term refers to fundamentalism in a moderate perspective, enabling moderate fundamentalists to be involved in political activities adaptively and without resorting to the use of radical means. Using this term, I argue that the PKS is a part of the fundamentalist faction, differentiating it in principle from other modernist groups or parties in Indonesia. Its moderate nature, however, also differentiates it from the radical camps within the fundamentalist faction. The use of the term moderate fundamentalism allows for the observation of diversity within the fundamentalist faction and contributes to new insights into present-day Indonesian Islamic political parties.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v14i3.546
