Abstract

The Free Aceh Movement (GAM) is a group that demands that the central government be part of a democracy. The group moved freely and radically with the aim of separating itself from the rest of Indonesia. The focus of this paper is on analyzing GAM's transformation into the Aceh Party, which is different from other radical movements in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to understand the transformation through Laclau and Mouffe's ideas on radical hegemony and democracy. Radical democracy is a form of struggle in achieving autonomous authority on the basis of equality and equality. The author will use qualitative methods with literature study data collection techniques to strengthen problem analysis. The research results show that GAM is considered radical as it is in line with Laclau and Mouffe's ideas. They form a group to demand certain interests so as to create a state of antagonism and hegemony struggle. The formation of the Aceh Party is inseparable from a long journey to fight for the demands of the community and as a form of building political power in accordance with the environmental conditions of society in Aceh. Currently, the Aceh Party no longer implements radical democracy as it used to do with GAM.

Abstract

Abstract

Secularism is an ideology that seeks to maintain a clear separation between religion and the state. France is a prominent example of a country adhering to this ideology, reinforced by the laïcité policy, which forms the foundation of French secularism. This article employs a qualitative research method, specifically a literature review of various secondary data sources, to critically examine the role of secularism in France and its contribution to the emergence of Islamophobia in public life. The findings indicate that the implementation of the laïcité policy, particularly as a counter-terrorism measure following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) in the United States, has fostered an excessive concern over Muslims, who are frequently associated with terrorism. Consequently, Islamophobia has manifested in France through various forms of discrimination, physical and verbal violence, and hate speech, all of which pose significant threats to the security of Muslim communities in the country. Therefore, while secularism is intended to guarantee freedom for individuals to practice their religion without state interference, the situation in France reveals that secularism has, in fact, imposed restrictions on the practice of Islam.

Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the motives, goals, and mobilizing actors of the Gezi Park protests in Turkey in 2013 and the Aksi Bela Islam (ABI-Islamic defenders’ action) protests in Indonesia in 2016. The study finds that while both protests have strong Islamic historical roots, their underlying motives are significantly different. The Gezi Park protests were driven by government policies regarding the relocation of the park for commercial purposes, whereas the IDF protests were triggered by a statement made by the former Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, which was deemed blasphemous to Islam. Both movements share a common mobilizing factor, including the construction of easily understandable narratives for the masses. The ABI amplified public anger by emphasizing the importance of defending Islamic theological values that had been insulted, calling for collective prayer with prominent religious leaders as its key actors. On the other hand, the Gezi Park protests amplified public anger by voicing resistance against state brutality.

Abstract

In the 2024 Indonesian elections, the contest was not only a platform for senior politicians but also an opportunity for young candidates to demonstrate their capabilities. In DKI Jakarta, particularly South Jakarta, there were 78 young legislative candidates. However, despite the surge in young candidates, some members of the public perceived them as mere quota fillers for political parties, lacking political experience. The election results showed that out of 78 young legislative candidates in South Jakarta, only one was elected. This indicates a decline in young candidates' seats compared to the previous period, which had four seats. This study aims to analyze the decline in young legislative candidates' seats in the DKI Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) during the 2024 elections in South Jakarta and gather perspectives from candidates and the public based on voting behavior theory. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews with several informants, including candidates and South Jakarta residents. The findings reveal that the elected candidate applied an approach aligned with the public's perspective on young candidates. The psychological approach emerged as the most effective strategy in South Jakarta, surpassing the sociological and rational approaches.

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines the identity crisis experienced by the Rohingya Ethnic group in Myanmar and how the politicization of identity impacts human rights violations against this minority group. The Main focus of the research is to analyze the politicization process of Rohingya ethnic identity conducted by the Myanmar government through discriminatory policies, as well as to identify its implications for the fulfillment of basic human rights. Using a qualitative approach with literature study methods, this research finds that the Rohingya ethnic identity crisis stems from the Myanmar government's systematic refusal to recognize their existence as an official ethnic group. Identity politicization is reflected through the implementation of the 1982 citizenship law that revokes Rohingya citizenship, restrictions on access to education, health, and employment, as well as acts of violence resulting in mass displacement. The implications of this identity politicization include severe human rights violations such as murder, torture, rape, and village burning that have forced hundred of thousands of Rohingya to seek refuge in neighboring countries. This research concludes that the identity crisis and politicization experienced by the Rohingya ethnic group has created a cycle of violence and ongoing human rights violations that requires serious attention and handling from the international community Keywords : Rohingya, Myanmar, Identity Crisis, Identity Politicization, Human Rights.
