Abstract

Political conflicts involving religious identities have remained a persistent challenge in Indonesia, where social diversity often intersected with political contestation. This study examined ethnoreligious reconciliation mechanisms and practices of political tolerance observed during regional head elections (Pilkada) and in everyday interfaith relations in Mamasa, West Sulawesi. Although Mamasa experienced electoral polarization and episodes of political tension in the post-reform era, local wisdom and customary law have played a central role in promoting more peaceful and inclusive democratic practices. This research employed a qualitative case study design, collecting data through in-depth interviews with 12 key informants—religious leaders, customary authorities, local government actors, and voters—supplemented by secondary sources. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic approach that involved coding, categorization, and cross-case interpretation to understand how customary values shaped political behavior and conflict management. The findings have shown that Mamasa’s socio-cultural structure—rooted in inclusive dialogue, religious plurality, and customary mediation—has provided an effective informal mechanism for maintaining social harmony. Communities consistently elected interfaith candidates to regional leadership positions and created spaces for interreligious interaction that have supported processes of conflict reconciliation. These locally grounded practices reflected broader discourses on identity politics, peacebuilding, and democratic resilience. The practical significance of this study lies in demonstrating that culturally rooted reconciliation models can complement formal governance structures. Such approaches offer policymakers, local governments, and peacebuilding practitioners actionable insights for managing ethnoreligious tensions and strengthening democratic stability in pluralistic and post-conflict regions.

Abstract

Abstract

Education is a system consisting of various interconnected components, such as educational goals, educators, students, the educational environment, and educational tools. The success or failure of education depends not only on schooling but also on the synergy between these factors. This research is a qualitative study using literature review methods to identify the determinants influencing Islamic education, particularly in curriculum development and the formation of students' moral foundations. Each educational system is influenced by a philosophy underlying its educational vision and mission, encompassing views on humans, knowledge, and the ultimate goal of education. This philosophy influences curriculum development oriented toward achieving national educational goals, as well as the development of intellectual, moral, social, and work skills competencies. Furthermore, external factors such as family, environment, media, religion, and educational policy also play a significant role in the formation of students' moral foundations. This research provides insight into the importance of integrating various factors in achieving holistic educational goals.

Abstract

This paper studies the effect of domestic and foreign macroeconomy performances on the foreign direct investment (PMA) in Indonesia, employing descriptive and inferencial (econometric model) analyses. The national economic grcwth and national interest rate affect significantly PMA in Indonesia. While the national inflation rate positively effected on PMA, but resuits show that hyperinflation contributes to decreasing PMA. The macroeconomic improvement in some competitor countries, especially Chinese and Thailand tends to decrease PMA in Indonesia. However, the improvement of macroeconomies in Singapore and Malaysia can increase PMA in Indonesia. Therefore, bilateral relationship with these countries must be intensified. In addition, although the economic growth of some More Developed Countries (MDCs) has positive relationship with PMA in Indonesia, but their effect were not significant statistically, except Canada. This implies that global finance crisis, especially in USA and european countries would not largely effect on PMA in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine how the Bissu, as non-binary ritual leaders in Bugis society, sustain their identity and ritual authority amid shifting religious, cultural, and political landscapes. Method: The research adopts a qualitative approach using a phenomenological orientation. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with Bissu practitioners, community members, and government representatives, complemented by participant observation of rituals and cultural performances in Segeri, Pangkajene and Kepulauan (Pangkep), South Sulawesi. Data analysis was conducted through thematic and narrative techniques to identify recurring patterns related to lived experiences, adaptation strategies, and transformations of ritual authority. Findings: The findings reveal three main patterns. First, the Bissu experience a weakening of social recognition accompanied by stigma and economic vulnerability, despite their continued visibility in cultural events. Second, they actively employ religious and cultural adaptation strategies, integrating Islamic practices such as prayer, Barzanji recitation, and pilgrimage alongside traditional rituals. Third, Bissu ritual authority is being redefined from sacred, community-based leadership toward more symbolic and institutionally mediated roles, particularly through government-sponsored cultural and heritage programmes. Implications These findings contribute to debates on non-binary indigenous leadership by demonstrating that ritual authority is shaped not only by cosmology but also by institutional and political arenas where recognition is negotiated. Practically, the study suggests that cultural and local government policies should move beyond event-based recognition toward more sustainable support that enables the Bissu to maintain ritual roles within their communities. Originality: This study offers an original, voice-driven account grounded in Bissu narratives and direct observation, moving beyond symbolic or historical analyses. It introduces a two-level model of adaptation and conceptualises ritual authority as a dynamic process of contemporary negotiation rather than a fixed traditional status.
