Abstract

Saat ini Test of English as A Foreign Language (TOEFL) telah menjadi tren di dunia akademis. Beberapa perguruan tinggi di Indonesia, baik swasta maupun pemerintah, menerapkan skor TOEFL sebagai salah satu syarat untuk lulus ujian tesis. Selain itu, pentingnya bahasa Inggris di perguruan tinggi ditunjukkan dengan adanya mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai Mata Kuliah Umum atau Mata Kuliah Pengembangan Kepribadian (MPK) yang biasanya diberikan dalam dua semester. Di Sekolah Ekonomi dan Bisnis Telkom, Telkom University, bahasa Inggris umumnya diberikan di setiap semester, ganjil dan genap, di tahun pertama. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk membandingkan nilai TOEFL mahasiswa, nilai mata kuliah General English, dan nilai mata kuliah English for Business. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan di antara ketiga nilai/skor tersebut dan mengetahui apakah perbedaan tersebut bersifat signifikan atau tidak. Uji sampel berpasangan dan analisis varians (ANOVA) digunakan dalam penelitian ini sebagai teknik analisis untuk mengetahui apakah perbedaan antara ketiga nilai itu signifikan atau tidak. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Telkom Economy and Business School, Telkom University yang telah lulus TOEFL, Bahasa Inggris I (General English), dan Bahasa Inggris II (English for Business). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara deskriptif ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara ketiga nilai tes bahasa Inggris. Kata kunci : TOEFL, General English, English for Business, nilai, perbedaan Recently, Test of English as A Foreign Language (TOEFL) has become a trend in the academic world. Some universities in Indonesia, both private and state, apply TOEFL score as one of the requirements to pass thesis examination; in addition, the importance of English in higher education is shown by the existence of English subjects as general subjects or Mata Kuliah Pengembangan Kepribadian (MPK) which are commonly given in two semesters. In Telkom Economics and Business School, Telkom University, English is generally given in each semester, odd and even, of the first year. This research is conducted to compare students' scores in TOEFL, General English subject, and English for Business subject. The aim of the research is to find out whether there is a difference between the three scores, and to figure out the significance of the difference. Paired Sample Test and Varians Analysis (ANOVA) were used in this research as the analysis techniques to find out whether the differences of the three scores were significant or not. Population of the research were students of Telkom Economics and Business School, Telkom University who had passed the TOEFL, Bahasa Inggris I (General English subject ), and Bahasa Inggris II (English for Business subject). The result of the research shows that there is a significant difference between the three scores of the English tests. Keywords : TOEFL, General English, English for Business, score, difference

Abstract

ABSTRACT               Smartphone is a new media in the communication process. Smartphones are no longer used only for communication media but also to be considered by some manufacturers to make the smartphone as a medium of entertainment and education. The purpose of this research is to investigate and examine the effect of the Smartphone use intensity against the communication behavior (a study of Smartphone users among communication program students in Telkom University). This research involves one independent and dependent variables. The independent variable is the Smartphone use intensity (X) using Ardianto dan Erdinaya (2004). The dependent one is the communication behavior (Y) using Edward E. Sampson (Katherin Miller:2001). The primary data were collected through survey method with purposive sampling method using questionnaire given to 100 respondents. The type of this research was causal and descriptive with the research method of quantitative research. The data analysis technique was simple regression analysis. The results of the study showed that partially and simultaneous intensity of use of Smartphones effected significantly to the communication behavior in the amount of 55,4 % and the rest of 44,6 % was affected by other factors which are not examined in this research..

Abstract

The focus for this research was how the knowledge of a foreign language and the competence in the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) contributed to the safety of Indonesians working abroad. The study was questionnaire-based research and semi-structured interviews with Indonesian workers working in the informal sectors, particularly as domestic workers in Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and Hongkong. The method led to rich correlational and qualitative data providing an in"depth understanding of how knowledge of a language and competence on information and communication technologies contributed to the safety of Indonesians in these countries. Thus, the results provided here have proved the usefulness of understanding different languages and also the benefit of being competent on the use of cellular phones as one of the examples of information and communication technology. This research provides a basis for suggesting areas where recruiting companies can intervene to ensure safety while working over-seas.

Abstract

Dalam penelitian ini akan dibahas mengenai kekerasan verbal yang terdapat di media sosial, khususnya pada kanal YouTube Rezaoktovian karena dalam video blog yang diunggah banyak terdapat kata-kata kasar yang termasuk ke dalam tindak kekerasan nonfisik. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari jumlah dan kategori kekerasan verbal yang terdapat dalam video blog pada kanal Rezaoktovian dengan menggunakan pendekatan secara kuantitatif dan metode analisis isi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kekerasan verbal dibagi menjadi empat kategori, yaitu eufemisme, hiperbol, umpatan, dan umpatan dalam bahasa asing, dengan frekuensi kekerasan verbal rata-rata sebanyak 924 kali. Menyangkut masalah etika, Reza Oktovian telah melanggar norma kesopanan, serta hukum yang ada pada Undang-Undang ITE (Informasi dan Transaksi Elektronik), Nomor 11 Tahun 2008 Pasal 27 ayat III Bab VII tentang Perbuatan Yang Dilarang (Republik Indonesia, 2008). Hal ini dikhawatirkan akan memberikan dampak negatif kepada anak-anak berusia di bawah umur, yaitu mereka dapat meniru menggunakan kata-kata kasar yang sering diucapkan oleh Reza   Oktovian yang mengandung kekerasan verbal di YouTube.

Abstract

This article evaluates the integration of virtual reality (VR) technology in foreign language training for SMEs in Indonesia using the Kirkpatrick Model. The study involved SME actors from various industries who participated in a tailored VR language training program. Surveys and interviews were conducted to assess participants' reactions, perceptions, and relevance to language learning goals. The evaluation measured learning outcomes such as improved language proficiency and increased confidence in using foreign languages in business settings. The study also investigated behavioral changes resulting from VR training, including language skills application in daily business activities and communication strategies with international partners or customers. The overall impact of the program on SMEs' competitiveness, market expansion, and international collaboration was evaluated. The findings indicate that the VR training program was effective, with positive reactions, learning outcomes, and behavioral changes in business activities. The study emphasizes the importance of measuring reactions and suggesting improvements in training materials and implementation schedules based on participant feedback. The VR-based language training program holds promise for enhancing SMEs' language skills, competitiveness, and internationalization efforts.

Abstract

Generation Z frequently uses slang as a communication medium for daily conversations due to the proliferation of social media. People typically blend various language variations for communication, whether in real-world interactions or in the virtual realm. One such interaction in the virtual world using slang occurs on the TikTok application, both in content creation and in the comment section. This interaction has transformed slang into a cyberculture, facilitating the exchange of identities in cyberspace. This research utilizes a virtual ethnography approach, incorporating four levels of cyber media analysis, to investigate the usage of slang by Generation Z on the TikTok application at various levels. Through observation and interviews with TikTok content creators and Generation Z users, researchers found several types of slang that have become cultural artifacts on the TikTok application, including slang derived from foreign languages, acronyms, abbreviations, and reversed words, as well as slang borrowed from foreign languages. The interactions occurring on the TikTok application also have real-world effects on the informants, such as experiences, relationships, and changes in daily communication habits due to the presence of slang.
