Abstract

(Lynn & Holderness, 2013) acknowledged that vocabulary is an important part of student education. Without learning vocabulary, students can lose the ability to read and understand. This study aimed to find out the significant differences in applying Kahoot, Quizziz and Google form as the media of exercise in online learning for enhancing learner's vocabulary. The design of this study was quasi-experimental. The population of this study was the 8th grade of junior high school 17 Gresik. There were 2 Experimental groups and 1 control group consisted of 32 students each. The instruments of the study were a pre-test and a post-test of vocabulary mastery and using an online media called Kahoot, Quizizz and Google form. The data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0. The finding showed that there were significant differences by using Kahoot and Quizizz as media of exercise to the students' vocabulary, while there was no significant different using google form. Further testing using Anova showed that there were no any significant differences among those 3 media.

Abstract

Speaking, among the four basic language skills – speaking, listening, writing, reading-, is of an exclusive importance in daily life and it is a vital complementary tool in communication skills. Unfortunately, it is not that easy to master English speaking skill and use it to communicate, especially for students who learn English as foreign language (EFL), where they rarely find the situation to use English. Meanwhile, self-efficacy is one of the factors that affect the success of EFL students speaking skill. On the other hand, collocation is a succession of two or more words that must be learned as an integral whole and not pieced together from its component parts which is also an important factor in mastering speaking. This research was carried out to know whether there is a correlation between students’ speaking self-efficacy and collocation competence in speaking. The researcher chose ninth grade students of SMPN 1 PARENGAN to conduct this study. The researcher used the students 9A, 9B, and 9C as the sample which involved 103 students. The data was obtained from a speaking self-efficacy questionnaire and a speaking test. The result of the data correlation coefficient is 0,760 with 0.00 Significant (ρ = 0.00). So, null hypothesis (Ho) can be rejected. It means there is a positive and high correlation between students’ speaking self-efficacy and collocation competence in speaking. It can be concluded that the higher the speaking self-efficacy, the higher the collocation competence in speaking.

Abstract

Writing is a productive skill that the students give their ideas, knowledge, and opinions about something into the text. Many students consider that writing is a complex skill. In addition, the teacher often spends much time to explain the materials, then it makes the students do not have enough time to finish their writing task to solve those problems, the researcher offers learning method of flipped learning to engage the students doing the activities of writing. Based on the previous studies, flipped learning was given the positive effect in language teaching and learning, such as grammatical performance, reading comprehension, students’ achievement and stress. Thus, making different from the previous study, the researcher applied flipped learning which combines with graphic organizers to teach writing skill. This study was to know the significant effect of flipped learning through graphic organizers toward writing skill. The design of this study was quasi experimental design with 11th grade of social students at MAN 2 Gresik as the subject. The researcher took two classes as the sample by cluster random sampling. They were XI.IPS-1 which consisted of 38 students as experimental group and XI.IPS-2 which consisted of 39 as control group. The data was collected by distributing pre-test and post-test, then researcher analyzed it using SPSS 16.0, independent sample t-test. The research finding showed that there was a significant difference between experimental group and control group. It was proven by the result of the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.012. The sig. (2-tailed) was lower than 0.05 (0.012 < 0.05), so the null hypothesis (H0) can be rejected. It means that flipped learning through graphic organizers had significantly affected toward writing skill. Further, it can be concluded that flipped learning through graphic organizers gave the positive effect toward writing skill at MAN 2 Gresik. The researcher suggests for English teacher to apply flipped learning as an active learning approach in language teaching and learning process. For further researchers, it is hoped to apply flipped learning to develop other skills with the different way.

Abstract

This article discussed how to bridge communication between international students studying at host universities in other countries through digital literacy practices and is a model for global social interaction. This article also investigates the use of English proficiency, specifically for students in Indonesia and Thailand via online platform. It is based on semi structure interviews synchronously and asynchronously conducted with international students in both countries. The article focuses on five international students studying abroad from five different countries. This article uses an ethnography case study which describes some images from the results and findings in greater depth. The findings indicate the reasons for analysis and effectiveness in moving literacy practice toward digitalization for L2 students. These findings suggest that new literacy learning is rapidly evolving with advanced technology, necessitating the use of a high-speed Internet connection. This study contributes to language planning as L2 based on ethnography which has also been adapted into digital literacy for Thai and Indonesian students. In addition, this research's contribution is to give some people more about the importance of digital literacy practices, especially for an institution that has international students in teaching and learning. The authors' focus is on their personal experiences with digital literacy practices

Abstract

This conceptual article addresses the crucial issue of out-class collaborative learning as understood and practiced among most EFL Indonesian students. With the popularity of collaborative learning among EFL students, collaborative learning in secondary as well as tertiary education has been largely influenced by group competition and product-based assessment. As a result, the dishonesty of collaborative learning occurs because of the absence of process-based approaches during out-class collaboration. This article elaborates the cause and practices of “You do the task and I will present it” as a form of collaborative learning. This article highlights the causes and effects of the deceitful collaborative learning process as well as proposes valuable recommendations for proper collaborative learning activities. Finally, the article proposed a collaborative learning model using a universal collaboration approach to overcome the deceitful practices of out-class collaborative learning.

It uses the data from questionnaire distributes to respondents in order to find out the target needs and learning needs of participants. The participant of this research are 40 students of industrial electronics engineering (TEI) of 10th grade students in the academic year of 2021/2022 at SMK Manbaul Ulum Kebomas, East Jawa, Indonesia. The study results illustrated that the implementation of project-based learning strategy in the vocational high school is one of the ways to find the way how to answer this problem. In the designing and implementing of PBL here needs to find the Need Analysis (target needs and learning needs). Unstructured interview in focus group discussion was used to support the result from questionnaire. The result showed that students had positive responses on their perception toward the use of Zoom application. Most of the students responded that Zoom application helped them perform speaking activity. The result of interview in focus group discussion also showed reasons that most students chose using Zoom for their speaking performance because it was easy to use and provided useful features for interaction with their teacher and other students. However, the main problem faced by students while using zoom application was internet connection. This gave bad effect for their learning process because they could not catch some of the material explained by the lecturer.
