Abstract

Abstract

Maternal mental health problems during the perinatal period remain a significant global health concern due to their impact on maternal well-being, pregnancy outcomes, and infant development. Mindfulness-based interventions have increasingly been used as non-pharmacological approaches to improve psychological well-being among pregnant and postpartum women. This systematic review aimed to analyze the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for perinatal maternal mental health. The review used a systematic literature review design with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach. Literature searches were conducted through Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SpringerLink for articles published from 2021 to April 2026. A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria. The reviewed studies mainly consisted of randomized controlled trials evaluating mindfulness counseling, mindfulness-based childbirth and parenting programs, meditation, relaxation techniques, and digital mindfulness interventions. Overall, mindfulness-based interventions demonstrated positive effects in reducing anxiety, depression, stress, pregnancy-related distress, and fear of childbirth. Several studies also reported improvements in emotional well-being, childbirth satisfaction, mindfulness awareness, maternal–fetal attachment, and breastfeeding self-efficacy. Mindfulness-based interventions represent effective complementary approaches for improving perinatal maternal mental health, particularly in reducing psychological distress and enhancing maternal emotional well-being during pregnancy and postpartum.

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea is a fairly common health problem during the menstrual cycle and often disrupts the activities of adolescent girls. Non-pharmacological management of menstrual pain is increasingly in demand, this is chosen because it is considered to have a higher level of safety and a low risk of side effects. One method used is peppermint aromatherapy through inhalation. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in the intensity of primary dysmenorrhea before and after administration of peppermint aromatherapy inhaler sticks to adolescent girls at STT Dharma Bhakti. This study used a pre-experimental research design with a one group pretest-posttest method. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique with 28 respondents. The instrument used in this study was the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) to measure the level of pain before and after the intervention. Peppermint aromatherapy inhaler sticks with a dose of 0.5 ml were given and inhaled for 10 minutes, once a day on the first two days of menstruation. The results of the analysis showed a decrease in the median pain intensity from 5,00 to 2,00, and the average from 4,86 to 1,82. The Wilcoxon test produced a Z value = -4,737 with a p-value = 0,000 (p < 0,05), which indicated a significant difference between before and after administration of peppermint aromatherapy inhaler sticks. In conclusion, peppermint aromatherapy inhaler sticks are effective in reducing the intensity of primary dysmenorrhea, and can be used as a practical and non-invasive alternative therapy for menstrual pain in adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Low birth weight infants (LBWI) are at risk of growth disorders and neonatal complications. Baby massage therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention believed to improve infant growth and weight gain. Purpose: To examine and analyze the research findings related to the effectiveness of infant massage therapy on weight gain in low-birth-weight infants Method: This literature review analyzed articles from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect published between 2021–2026. Studies that focused on infant massage therapy and weight gain in underweight or premature infants were included. The inclusion criteria are described in this article. Results: The analyzed studies showed that infant massage therapy promotes weight gain in underweight and premature infants. Massage increases activity of the vagus nerve, which in turn boosts digestion, nutrient absorption, sleep quality, and milk production in infants. Other benefits include better physiological stability, less stress and better bonding between mother and baby. Conclusion: Infant massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and maintains the production of growth hormone, thus promoting the absorption of nutrients and the growth of infants. The results show infant massage therapy is safe, effective and cost-efficient.
