Abstract

Nowadays, there are a number of approaches to teach English. All of them have been used and developed along the time to help the foreign students to reach a better proficiency of English as foreign language. For few years, there have been many opinions that reinforce the idea of integrating four skills to create a real communication atmosphere as authentic as possible. They propose to mix reading and listening comprehension with oral and written expression in teaching English. Hence, this investigation aims to identify whether by including integration of four skills into the lesson can bring significant affects or not to the performance of undergraduate students in doing a TOEFL sample test. To reach this, observation of lessons will be recorded on checklist and the application of a standardized test will be applied in order to establish the relationship between two variables, the integration of four skills in lesson and the affects to the students’ performance in doing TOEFL sample test. Finally, it can be properly affirmed that the integration of the four skills of the English language influences the students’ performance concerning English as a foreign language.

Abstract

ABSTRACTUsing films for classroom activities is often doubted as an appropriate and meaningful way to teach listening comprehension. Since the film is authentic material and far from pedagogical instruction, its use has rarely been paid attention to. This paper aims to prove that using film can be an alternative and effective way to teach listening comprehension. The problems which are commonly faced by the students in film viewing for listening activities and the proposed techniques along with film viewing activities are discussed further in this paper. The result of the discussion shows that using film to teach listening comprehension is motivating, enhancing and appealing for the students.ABSTRAKMenggunakan film untuk kegiatan di kelas sering diragukan sebagai cara yang berarti dan sesuai untuk mengajarkan listening comprehension. Karena film adalah materi otentik dan dianggap jauh dari konten pedagogik, penggunaan film jarang sekali diberi perhatian. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan bahwa menggunakan film untuk kegiatan pembelajaran dapat menjadi salah satu alternatif dan cara yang efektif untuk mengajarkan listening comprehension. Artikel ini membahas masalah-masalah yang umum dihadapi oleh siswa dalam kegiatan pemutaran film, teknik-teknik untuk memutar film, dan kegiatan-kegiatan dalam pemutaran film untuk kegiatan listening di kelas. Abstract

This research has a background to determine the extent to which the use of the book "al mufrodat wa Istikhdamuha fii al Jumal" in the Darul Quran Islamic boarding school in Mojokerto City in improving the mastery of memorizing Arabic vocabulary. By utilizing this book in the learning process, it is hoped that it can provide different motivation and innovation for students in mastering memorizing Arabic vocabulary orally and in writing in an easier and more thorough manner. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research data was obtained by observation, where the researcher functions as an instrument to carry out continuous observations, document studies and in-depth interviews. The validity of the data is done by triangulation of sources. Meanwhile, for data analysis using interactive model analysis, namely by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study describe the design of the book المفرداتو استخدامها في الجمل which is very helpful for vocabulary mastery, if students are asked to write the words they have just learned when the meanings of the words are still fresh in students' minds. Students write vocabulary. The last stage of the vocabulary teaching activity is to use the new words in a perfect sentence according to the guidelines from the book orally and in writing. Exercises like this really help to strengthen vocabulary understanding and accelerate the improvement of students' vocabulary memorization.

Abstract

Curriculum 2013 is the latest curriculum created by the government to make the education in Indonesia better. Scientific approach offered in this curriculum is very remarkable to discuss, since almost all educators are talking about this approach. However, most of the educators get trouble and feel confused to apply this approach in teaching English, since it is usually applied in science class. Therefore, this study was written to show the steps of applying this approach in teaching English. This study, used library research, tried to offer new alternative vision to emerge the students’ critical thinking through Model-Based Inquiry, an activity which is able to engage the student to learn more deeply with content and embody of five characteristic of scientific knowledge in which the idea presented in the form of models are testable, revisable, explanatory, conjectural and generative. This study provided the example of teaching narrative text which might be able to be applied in the various final products which could be alternative result of this strategy.

Abstract

Good and bad pictures of a company regarding the level of success achieved can be seen from the financial performance of a company. Banking institutions have a high level of complexity and risk, so applying a good risk management system can improve bank financial performance with through Good Corporate Governance. This study aims to determine the effect of risk management as measured by the NPF ratio to measure financing risk, BOPO to measure operational risk and CAR to measure capital adequacy on financial performance as measured by ROA, ROE and NPM ratios and to determine the effect of GCG as measured by the size of the board of commissioners, the size of the board of directors, the size of the audit committee and the size of the sharia supervisory board as a moderating variable for risk management on the financial performance of BRI Syariah banks for the period 2015-2019. This study used quantitative research methods. and analysed data using Partial Least Square Software, namely the SmartPLS version 2 program. The results of this study indicate that risk management as measured by the NPF, BOPO and CAR ratios has a significant negative effect on financial performance at BRI Sharia Banks and GCG has not been able to moderate risk management on financial performance.

Abstract

Definitions of grammar often refer to the study of language as a system of words that demonstrate some apparent rule of structure and arrangement into sentences. Sometimes the definition includes pronunciation, meaning of words, and history of words (etymology). Some definitions emphasize grammar as a system of rules in a language. In simplest term, grammar covers the rules that govern the way our communication system works. In order to meet the need of grammar teaching, in pedagogical field, there have been some methods and approach which are applied. However, critics pertaining to the weaknesses of such methodology have been aroused. The main question as the result of the quest for better methodology for grammar teaching is what appropriate method or approach as an alternative way of grammar teaching is. This theoretical research is aimed to propose the influential alternative approach for grammar teaching. This study will start by describing the historical view of grammar teaching and pointing out the link between language input and pedagogical mediation, in plain language between grammars and teaching, by introducing and redefining the concept of pedagogical grammar. Eventually, as the ultimate aim of this research this study is going to explain the current development of grammar teaching, lexical approach, as the problem solver concerning with grammar teaching.

Abstract

Language is one of the important aspects for early childhood development. Language functions as a means of communication as well as being an important means for the lives of children. It is dangerous to be a means for children to be able to interact with each other, share their experiences, and be able to improve intellectually, namely in order to develop their language knowledge and skills. For early childhood it is a period of development that must be fostered and developed so that they can make full use of their language skills. If the guidance, direction, and handling are not appropriate or even not obtained by the child causes language development that is not in accordance with what is expected by parents at home or by educators at school. The methods that can be done to stimulate and optimize children's language intelligence, including the method of question and answer, storytelling, tourist visits and play play (dramatic play). The role playing method consists of playing the role of macro and micro by going through the stages of playing an artificial role, playing with the object, pretending to be related to actions and circumstances, perseverance and oral communication. Based on data analysis and discussion, information can be obtained that the method of playing drama (play dramatically) / role playing is carried out in several stages, namely identifying figures, determining story settings, interpreting stories and values ​​contained, reflection and observation. The application of this technique is expected to provide optimization of early childhood language intelligence.

Abstract

Kecerdasan spiritual sebagai rometer siswa dalam mengontrol kerohanian jiwanya. Melalui diterapkannya budaya religius 5S dalam keseharian siswa sesuai arahan yang diberikan lembaga sebagai cara meningkatkan kecerdasan spiritual. Implementasi budaya religius 5S yang sudah berjalan di MI Darussalam Pacet dinilai dapat meningkatkan kecerdasan spiritual dengan baik di kelas VA. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui proses implementasi budaya religius 5S dan implikasi budaya religius 5S oleh lembaga dalam meningkatkan kecerdasan spirituak siswa kelas VA. Menggunakan jenis penelitian dengan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan jenis penelitian studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, wawancara, dokumetasi. Teknik analisis data terdiri dari pengumpulan data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Uji keabsahan data menggunakan triangulasi teknik. Hasil penelitian pada penelitian mengenai proses implementasi budaya religius 5S dalam meningkatkan kecerdasan spiritual siswa terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi serta siswa memiliki kejujuran yang tinggi, kedua siswa memiliki rasa kerjasama yang baik sehingga menciptakan komunikasi yang efektif, ketiga siswa memiliki rasa syukur yang tinggi.

Abstract

The Montessori method has been gaining more attention in the last five years. Some preschools and kindergarten have been applying the Montessori method in the English learning activity. However, the method is mostly applied by prestigious schools based on several factors: the school’s readability related to the budget, the stakeholders and teachers as well as the parents’ perceptions, the teacher’s competency, etc. This case study is intended to investigate the implementation of English teaching and learning by using the Montessori method in preschool and kindergarten settings. Six teachers participated in the study. The data were collected from interviews and observations. The results indicate that applying the Montessori method in English learning activities can result positively in students' English ability and performance. The findings propose several suggestions related to the issue of English for early childhood education.
