Abstract

Introduction: Cataract is an eye lens opacification which prevents clear vision. It is the leading cause of blindness and vision impairment worldwide, including Indonesia. It can also be occurred in children that leads to a major cause of childhood blindness. The prevalence of childhood cataract ranges from 3 to 6 per 10,000 children. The main treatment for cataract is surgery, although pediatric cataract surgery has several complications. One of the most severe complication is glaucoma due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). This study aimed to determine pre- and post-operative IOP in pediatric cataract surgery. Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational analytic study. Secondary data were collected from medical records of Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya from January 2017 to August 2019. Age, gender, pre- and post-operative IOP, and intraocular lens implantation data were taken. Calculation was performed using the Saphiro-Wilk for data less than 50 samples. The Saphiro-Wilk test results showed that the data were normally distributed (p = 0.628). Data processing were then performed using the parametric t-pair test with a confidence level ofResults: 32 eye samples were obtained from 16 pediatric cataract surgery patients. The mean of pre-operative IOP was 13.05 mmHg and the mean of post-operative IOP was 13.36 mmHg. There was an increase in post-operative IOP with an average increase of 0.31 mmHg. There was no significant difference between pre- and post-operative IOP of pediatric cataract surgery patients (p = 0.711).Conclusion: There was no difference between pre- and post-operative IOP of pediatric cataract surgery patients at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya for the period of January 2017 - August 2019.

Abstract

Introduction: To report clinical outcome after posterior capsule rupture complication in a cataract patient with partial-thickness macular hole. Case presentation: A 49-year-old woman was presented with blurred vision of the left eye two years before admission. The blurred vision increased, accompanied by eye dazzled on light exposure. There was a history of myopia on both eyes and partial-thickness macular hole in the left eye. The left eye visual acuity was 3/60 with S-7.00 correction became 5/12 no improvement with pinhole. There was a partial-thickness macular hole on the left eye in the optical coherence tomography macula. Cataract surgery was performed with intraoperative posterior capsule rupture (PCR) complication. Follow-up had been monitored from day-1 until day-60 postoperatively. Conclusions: The decision of performing cataract surgery prior to macular hole surgery is a good decision. Any intraoperative complication such as posterior capsule rupture should be followed up closely to avoid macular hole worsening. Long-term follow-up should be done to prevent the late complication after surgery.

Abstract

Introduction: Cataract, congenital heart defect, and hearing impairment are the three most common manifestations of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) that lead to developmental delay in the children. CRS usually present during the infant period of three months old as the median age number. Ironically, we found a 10-year-old boy who was diagnosed with CRS and there was no significant plan to improve his condition anymore because of his neglected by family. The purpose of this case report is to alert primary health workers and also ophthalmologists to do our best to prevent blindness due to cataracts in Indonesia with early detection. Case presentation: A 10-year-old boy was brought to the outpatient clinic with a chief complaint of difficulties in focusing the target in the classroom. The grandmother said that her grandson has already had a white plaque in his both eyes since he was born. The boy has also suffered from deaf-mutism. His visual acuity was hand movement and there was lens opacity in his both eyes. He also had posterior uveitis in both eyes followed by the presence of nystagmus. There was retinal detachment in ultrasonography (USG) examination. The patient has no cardiac abnormalities. Rubella infection was confirmed by the high number of IgG rubella serology. His grandmother had just brought the boy to the outpatient clinic because she never thought that the eyes needed therapy until the boy could not do his daily activities as the cataract worsen. Conclusions: The parent’s role is highly crucial for the visual outcome of patient with congenital ophthalmologic problems. Primary health worker also play a significant role in early detection that may prevent such incident. Delayed detection and management of congenital cataracts may cause permanent visual impairment and lead to patient’s poor quality of life.

Abstract

Curly red chili (Capsicum annum L.) is a horticultural plant that has high economic value. So many people are cultivating it. Chili plants are susceptible to the attack of Plant Disrupting Organisms (OPT) which can decrease the production yield and quality of chili harvests. One of the potentially damaging Plant Disrupting Organisms is pests, whose presence in chili plants is very diverse. The life cycle and eating activities are very detrimental to farmers because it will reduce the yield of chili plants. The purpose of this study is to find out the diversity of pest types and to determine the rate of attack from fruit fly pests (Bactrocera dorsalis) on the curly red chili plant (Capsicum annum L.). Research has been carried out in Cabeyan Village, Bendosari district, Sukoharjo. October 1, 2020 – February 28, 2021. The study used observational, descriptive, and interview methods. Data collection is done directly and sampling using random sampling methods. In this study found several types of pests consisting of 12 species divided into 11 species into phylum Artropoda and 1 Species of Phylum Mollusca. As well as the rate of attack of fruit flies (Bactrocera dorsalis) with the highest average intensity of attack at 76% of the attack scale is very heavy.

Abstract

Backgrounds: Cataract is the cause of 51% of blindness in the world. Cataracts can be caused by eye trauma, where 55 million eye trauma incidences are recorded annually. The most common trauma is blunt trauma. Based on previous studies, there were different research results on risk factors for eye trauma, and there were still few studies on traumatic cataracts due to blunt trauma. This study aims to determine the correlation between risk factors and the incidence of traumatic cataracts due to blunt trauma. Methods: This study is an analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used is total sampling with 52 samples of traumatic cataract patients in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital. The independent variables are the risk factors for age, gender, type of work, and location of trauma. The dependent variable is the incidence of traumatic cataracts due to blunt trauma. The data was collected with medical records and were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: A total of 21 patients (40.4%) had traumatic cataracts due to blunt trauma, and 31 patients (59.6%) had traumatic cataracts due to other trauma. The significance value of the correlation between age, gender, type of work, and location of trauma with the incidence of traumatic cataract due to blunt trauma respectively p=0.557, p=0.675, p=0.198, and p=0.512, which means p >0.05, so there is no significant correlation. Conclusion: There is no correlation between the risk factors and traumatic cataracts due to blunt trauma

Abstract

Abstract Introduction & Objectives : To determine association of nuclear cataract grades based on Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) III with phacoemulsification parameters and postoperative Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) and visual acuity. Methods : This was a prospective observational study in patient with uncomplicated senile cataract who gave consent and underwent phacoemulsification. Institutional Ethics Committee clearance was taken for the study. Preoperative nuclear cataract was evaluated using Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) III. Only nuclear grading NO and NC was obtained. All procedures was performed using peristaltic phaco machine and in the bag IOL implantation. Phacoemulsification parameters (US Total Time and CDE) were noted and compared in different grades of cataract. CCT change was recorded at day one after surgery. Results : Forty-six patients were evaluated. The mean USTT was 120.85 (56-252) seconds, mean CDE was 21.10 (5.70 – 43.38), and mean CCT change after surgery was 81.54(27 – 240). Nuclear grading of LOCS also had linear correlation with US Total Time (NO p<0.001, r=0.734; NC p<0.001, r=0.790) and CDE (NO p<0.001, r=0.728; NC p<0.001, r=0.685). There was significant correlation between CCT change with postoperative VA (p=0.002, r=0.443) and CDE (p<0.001, r= 0.553). CCT change also correlate with nuclear opacity (p=0.012, r=0.367) and nuclear color (p=0.035, r=0.312). Conclusion : Nuclear grading of LOCS III related to the amount of time and energy used in phacoemulsification, and also CCT change after surgery as a qualitative measurement of corneal edema. Increasing postoperative CCT affected patient's visual acuity after cataract surgery.

Abstract

Pencegahan penyalahgunaan narkotika ditegaskan melalui aspek hukum pidana.
