Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity and wound healing of Telang (Clitoria ternatea L.) leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25293 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 in 15 New Zealand rabbits aged 3-5 months weighing 1500–2500 grams of hyperglycemia induced by alloxan and randomly divided into 5 groups, namely normal, negative control (cream base), positive control (Sagestam® which each gram contains Gentamycin Sulfate equivalent to 1 mg of Gentamycin), topical administration of 10% and 20% Telang leaf extract cream. The back skin of the hyperglycemic rabbit was injured with a punch biopsy with a diameter of 5 mm, a depth of ± 0.5 mm, then treated according to the test group for 14 days. Parameters measured included wound diameter and histological observations of infected and non-infected wounds in hyperglycemic rabbits. The results showed that 10% Telang leaf extract cream had antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli which was comparable to the positive control, namely the diameter of the inhibition zone against S. aureus and E. coli was 27.3mm and 18.5mm. Telang leaf extract cream also had infection wound healing activity which was comparable to positive control in hyperglycemic rabbits, wound healing activity for infected wounds was 0.9 mm and non-infected wounds were 0.8 mm.

Abstract

Sweet potatoes have a fairly high starch content, namely 84.89%. High levels of starch can be used as a disintegrating agent in the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations, namely tablets. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of variations in the concentration of sweet potato flour as a disintegrating agent and to determine how sweet potato flour is a candidate disintegrating agent in making tablet preparations using experimental methods in several concentrations on the properties and physical properties of Metamizole Na® tablets. Based on the results of this research, 3 formulations were made, namely formulation I (2.5%), formulation II (5%), formulation III (7.5%). The results obtained from this research indicate that formulation I is the best formulation of the other 3 formulas because formulation I is the formulation whose results in each test are closest to the positive control.

Abstract

Introduction : Cocoa leaves (Theobroma cacao L.) are known to contain compounds with potential antibacterial properties. This study aims to investigate the antibacterial activity of various cocoa leaf fractions against Salmonella typhi. Methods: This experimental study involved the extraction of cocoa leaves followed by fractionation using polar, semi-polar, and non-polar solvents. The antibacterial activity was tested using the agar diffusion method to measure the inhibition zones produced by each fraction against Salmonella typhi. The positive control group used chloramphenicol at a concentration of 400 ppm, while the cocoa leaf fractions were tested at various concentrations. An ethanol-free test was also conducted to ensure no ethanol contamination in the fractions tested. Results: The results showed that the water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane fractions of cocoa leaves exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi. The water fraction at a concentration of 600 ppm showed the largest inhibition zone with a diameter of 27.30 mm, which is close to the effectiveness of the positive control chloramphenicol, which had an inhibition zone of 27.70 mm. The ethanol-free test confirmed that no ethanol was detected in the three fractions. Conclusion: Based on the data obtained, cocoa leaf fractions, especially the water fraction, have the potential to be effective natural antibacterial agents against Salmonella typhi. This finding provides a basis for further development in the use of cocoa leaf extracts as an alternative treatment for bacterial infections.

Abstract

Scrubs are widely used in cosmetic care, primarily for exfoliation to remove dead skin cells. This study used a 70% ethanol extract from pineapple cores (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.), which contains active compounds such as bromelain, flavonoids, and saponins. These compounds were formulated into a scrub gel that potentially benefits skin health, especially in exfoliation. The aim of this study was to evaluate good physical quality characteristics, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, adhesion, and spreadability, based on varying concentrations of ethanol extract from pineapple cores. This research employed a true experimental method with a post-test only design to determine the best physical quality of scrub gel formulations containing pineapple core extract (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) at three extract concentrations: 3%, 5%, and 10%. The physical quality evaluation of the scrub gel, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, viscosity, adhesion, and spreadability, showed good results and met the standards. However, the pH testing results for the three formulations did not meet the standards, as they were relatively neutral to slightly acidic (6.48-7.58). The hedonic test results indicated that Formulation 2 (5%) received the highest ratings in terms of aroma and texture, while Formulation 1 (3%) and Formulation 3 (10%) also showed a tendency to be preferred in certain aspects, particularly in terms of color and texture. The Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney test showed significant differences in pH, viscosity, and adhesion (p-value: 0.46-0.05 ≤ 0.05). Meanwhile, the One-Way ANOVA test on spreadability showed a very significant difference in spreadability, with Formulation 3 and the negative control having the highest spreadability (p-value <0.005). The concentration of pineapple core extract affects the physical and sensory characteristics of the scrub gel, with the addition of active pineapple core extract at a concentration starting from 3% already showing good physical characteristics.

Abstract

The elderly population residing in nursing home requires special attention, because elderly people often have diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases which require them to store medicines to be taken regularly every day. Therefore, elderly people are required to understand drug management, namely how to obtain, use, store, and dispose of drugs. Inadequate understanding of medication management for the elderly in nursing home can cause damage to stored medication, resulting in a decrease in the effectiveness of the medication. The aim of this activity is to increase the understanding of elderly in terms of medication management. The community service method is in the form of a seminar with the opening stages, material presentation, and closing. The results of the activity lasted for 3 hours with 30 participants, and presentations from 4 speakers on the topic of how to obtain, use, store and dispose of medication properly and correctly. This activity went very well and the evaluation was calculated at the end. Through this educational activity, participants gain an understanding of how to obtain, use, store and dispose of medication properly and correctly so that medication can be used optimally and avoid swallowing expired medication by elderly people in nursing homes.
