Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze how the African American Vernacular English is applied by the characters and to identify how American society in the 1960’s was portrayed in The Help novel. Using the descriptive qualitative research as a method, this researcher attempts to reveal the characteristics of African American Vernacular English as a language used by the characters in their daily life and American society back in the 1960’s. In identifying the data, theory from Wolfram (2004) about AAVE characteristics and Kurtz (2003) about America’s society in the 1960’s is used. The data were mainly collected from the dialogues of the maids as the native speaker of AAVE.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the characters and moral values contained in the film "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson. Based on the theories of character and moral values collected, four main points are analyzed, they are: 1) How is the character appear in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on the theory put forward by Russel How is moral values that appear in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on the theory put forward by Milhorn. 3) There are three kinds of characters that appear in the characters in "Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on Russel’s theory, those are the Protagonist, the protagonist played by Kate Keller, Annie Sullivan, Captain Arthur Keller, Mr. Anagnos, and Viney, the Foil, played by Hellen Keller, James Keller, and Aunt Ev, 4) There are six types of moral values that appear in “Miracle Worker" by William Gibson based on Milhorn’s theory, they are: belief, fairness, kind-hearted honesty, responsibility, and tolerance, belief is the most dominant moral values of all moral values that arise.Keywords: character; moral value; moral value; film.

Abstract

Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: 1) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata dan struktur kalimat secara bersama-sama terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris. 2) Pengaruh penguasaan kosakata terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris. 3) Pengaruh struktur kalimat terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah survei. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur dengan besar sampel sebanyak 90 siswa yang diambil secara acak dari siswa SMP Widya Manggala Jakarta Timur dan siswa SMP Kuntum Wijaya Kusuma Jakarta Timur. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada bulan September-November 2019. Instrumennya yaitu tes dan angket. Analisis dilakukan dengan metode regresi linear ganda. Hasil pengujian hipotesis diperoleh kesimpulan sebagai berikut: 1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata dan struktur kalimat secara bersama-sama terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,003 < 0,05 dan F hitung = 6,382. 2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig= 0,002 < 0, 05 dan t hitung = 2,198. 3) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan struktur kalimat terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi bahasa Inggris siswa SMP Swasta di Jakarta Timur. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan perolehan nilai Sig = 0,003 < 0, 05, dan oleh t hitung = 3,108.Kata Kunci: penguasaan kosakata, struktur kalimat, pemahaman bacaan teks eksposisi Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding the effect of vocabulary mastery and reading interest toward the students’ narrative writing skill. The hypothesis of this study includes: 1). There is a collaborative significant effect of the vocabulary mastery and reading interest toward the students’ narrative writing skill; 2). There is a significant effect of the vocabulary mastery toward the students’ narrative writing skill; and 3). There is a significant effect of the reading interest toward the students’ narrative writing skill. The method of the research is a double regression linear by descriptive survey analysis applying some samples from a number of population and using questionnaire and tests instrument for data collection. The number of the samples is 80 students of grade ten (X) who are students of the State Vocational High School in West Jakarta.

Abstract

The aim of this research are to find: 1) The effects of Reading Habit and Grammar Mastery jointly Towards Student’s Reading Comprehension. 2) The Effects of Reading Habit Towards Student’s Reading Comprehension. 3) TheEffects of Grammar Mastery Towards Student’s Reading Comprehension. The method used is survey method. The instruments were used multiple choice and questioner. Total samples of this research followed by 75 students with a cluster simple random technique. The result showed: 1)There are significant effects of reading habit and grammar mastery jointly towards the student’s reading comprehension. This is proved by the value of sig.0.000<0.05 and Fobserved=52.564. 2) There is a significant effect of reading habit towards student’s reading comprehension. This is proved by the This is proved by the value of sig.0.000<0.05 and tobserved=7.620. 3)There is significant effect of the grammar mastery towards student’s reading comprehension significantly. This is proved by the This is proved by the value of sig.0.000<0.05 and tobserved = 6.100.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze: 1) the use of chain writing method and media picture in English descriptive text learning. 2) the advantages and disadvantages of chain writing method and media picture in English descriptive text learning. 3) the results of the use of chain writing method and media picture in English descriptive text learning. The research method is a case study. The subjects of this research were 5 students. Observation, interview and documentation were used as the instruments of eliciting the data. The results show that: 1) the use of chain writing method and media picture in English descriptive text learning worked well, that was students actively involved in learning corresponding lesson plan. 2) chain writing method and media picture in English descriptive text learning each has its advantages and disadvantages. 3) The implementation by using chain writing method and media picture in English descriptive text learning showed very good results, in cognitive, affective, psychomotor aspects.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know 1) Types of moral aspects contained. 2) The dominant moral aspect is found. 3) Correlation of morality aspects with a sociological approach to literature. The research method used to analyze this film is a qualitative method that contains two elements, namely intrinsic elements in characters and characterizations as in morals through the approach of literary sociology. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that 1) There are 7 moral aspects found in the “Ferdinand” film based on Michelle Borba's theory, namely Empathy, Conscience, Self-Control, Respect, Kindness, Tolerance, Justice. 2) The dominant moral aspects found were kindness (11 data), empathy (6 data), conscience (5 data), and self control (5 data). 3) the correlation of morality aspects with the approach of literary sociology, both of which highlight the conditions and social problems that are taking place in social life.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the correlation between students' reading interest and vocabulary mastery as they relate to their reading comprehension. This study utilised a quantitative methodology and a survey as its instrument. The data acquisition methodology involved the utilisation of a questionnaire and a test. The assessment is employed to gather data pertaining to students' reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery, while the questionnaire gathers information regarding students' reading interests. An examination of the hypotheses was conducted using multiple regression analysis. The following are the investigation findings: 1) The combined impact of vocabulary mastery and students' reading interest on students' reading comprehension is statistically significant, as indicated by the Fcount value of 31.628 and the significance level of Sig 0.000, which is less than 0.05. 2) Vocabulary mastery has a substantial impact on the reading comprehension of pupils, as demonstrated by the obtained score and Sig 0.000 < 0.05 and tcount = 5.677. 3) Students' reading comprehension is significantly impacted by their reading interest, as indicated by Sig 0.000 < 0.05 and tcount = 4.492.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze how the characters and representations of serial killers in fictional series are depicted. The data source used in this research is dialogue transcripts from the fictional series Criminal Minds Evolution, which consists of ten episodes. The research was conducted using the observation method. Data analysis uses Critical Stylistics Analysis tools specifically for Naming and Describing, Representing Actions/Events/States, and Equating and Contrasting tools. The research results obtained the following conclusions: 1) The author tends to use Naming, Material Action Intentional, Mental Cognition, and Equating tools in depicting the characters of serial killers. 2) The author represents serial killers as males, citizens of the United States, in of a various range of ages, have families, have psychopathic traits, are organized and methodical, have a variety of social and occupational statuses, and have a motive for revenge.
