Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve English pronunciation skills through an extensive listening method for children at Panti Asuhan Putera Bonang Banjarmasin. The research objectives were to investigate how effective the implementation of pronunciation training through extensive listening was and to assess the extent of its impact on the children's English pronunciation abilities. The methodology involved a combination of lectures, discussions, and structured exercises, including pretests and posttests. The program was conducted with 15 participants aged 12 to 15 years, most of whom had limited English proficiency. The results indicated significant improvement in the children's pronunciation skills, with average pretest scores rising from 62.93 to 81.33 in the posttest, accompanied by a decrease in standard deviation and error margin, suggesting a more consistent outcome. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the extensive listening method in enhancing pronunciation and fostering a more natural and enjoyable learning process for underprivileged children. The study suggests that similar interventions could be replicated in other orphanages to bridge the language gap and improve communication skills for future opportunities.

Abstract

This research explored the English learning experiences of Generation Z students in Indonesia using a narrative inquiry approach. Amidst the rapid advancement of digital technology, it was important to understand how Generation Z, born in the digital era, interacted with English language learning. This research aimed to explore students' perceptions, challenges, and lived experiences in learning English to contribute to developing more relevant teaching practices. A qualitative research design was applied by collecting personal narratives from five purposively selected students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective writing tasks, then thematically analyzed to identify patterns and individual perspectives. The findings of this research identified four main themes: (1) a preference for informal digital platforms, such as social media and learning apps; (2) emotional changes related to self-confidence and peer comparison; (3) the role of teacher support and classroom environment in enhancing motivation; and (4) a growing view of English as a practical skill that was more important than mere academic achievement. The findings illustrated the dynamic relationship between personal motivation, socio-cultural influences, and technological engagement in shaping students' language learning journeys. The research concluded that recognizing and integrating students' narratives in teaching practices could increase learner engagement, encourage independence, and support more adaptive and empathic teaching strategies. These findings' implications were highly relevant for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers to align English language teaching with the values and realities of Generation Z students.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of teacher overcorrection on student confidence and motivation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking classrooms in Indonesia. Despite its importance, the relationship between error correction, student anxiety, and linguistic development remains understudied in Indonesian contexts. This research explores the perceived impact of teacher overcorrection on student self-confidence and motivation, with a focus on the 12th-grade students of SMAN 1 Alalak. The study adopts a qualitative case study approach, triangulating data from teacher interviews, student reflective journals, and preliminary questionnaires. The findings reveal a paradox between teacher intentions and student experiences, with overcorrection undermining student confidence and fostering a fixed mindset. The study highlights the need for teacher training in emotionally intelligent correction practices, balanced assessment methods, and student-centered feedback approaches to promote a growth mindset and enhance fluency development in Indonesian EFL learners

Abstract

This study aims to explore English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) students' perceptions of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in supporting their academic writing processes and identify the benefits and limitations they encounter when using these tools in their writing process. Six sixth-semester students from the ELESP were purposively selected based on their prior engagement with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, or QuillBot in academic writing tasks. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews that allowed participants to express their experiences openly while giving the researcher flexibility to probe further when necessary. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the findings. The findings indicate that the majority of students perceive AI paraphrasing tools as highly useful in the writing process, both in the linguistic and affective dimensions. The majority of EFL students also perceive AI tools as providing substantial benefits in supporting academic writing. Given these insights, it is suggested that educators and institutions integrate AI tools into writing pedagogy while providing explicit guidance on ethical and critical use.

Abstract

This research explores how English teachers integrate traditional strategies with technological tools in teaching academic vocabulary to non-native English learners. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, data were collected through interviews and classroom observations with two teachers from different educational contexts in Indonesia. The findings reveal that memorization serves as a foundation for discipline and retention, while contextual practices, games, and multimedia resources such as short videos and digital worksheets enhance engagement, confidence, and performance. Both teachers demonstrate that balancing conventional rigor with modern innovation fosters meaningful vocabulary mastery and supports broader academic achievement. This research contributes to the literature by highlighting the synergy between traditional and technological approaches, offering insights into effective pedagogical practices that can be adapted across diverse learning environments.
