Abstract

Background : Oral hygiene is very important to be kept for aestetic, phonetic, mastication function and health. There is a relationship between oral hygiene andgingival desease. Poor oral hygiene will increase the severity of gingival disease. However, some people still consider that oral hygiene issue is not something important.Purpose : To find out the status of oral hygiene and gingival status of patients in DentalHospital of Jember University and reviewed by age, gender and education. Metode :This study was a descriptive study with cross sectional approach. The samples were allnew patients of Dental Hospital of Jember University on October-November 2015. Theoral hygiene status was assessed by Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S) and gingivalstatus was assessed by Gingival Index (GI). Result : There were 35,84% of sample hada good oral hygiene, 54,87% had a medium oral hygiene and 9,29% had a poor oralhygiene. There were 7,08% of sample had a normal gingival, 58,85% had a light gingivalinflamation, 33,63% had a moderate gingival inflamation, and 0,44% had a severegingival inflamation. Keywords : Gingivitis, GI, OHI-S, Oral hygiene

Abstract

Abstrac Neutrophils are the first non-specific immune cells that successfully overcome the presence of antigens, starting with attachment and then terminate the antigen by phagocyte process. Mangosteen peel extract (Garcinia mangostana L.) possesses a compound that contains pharmacological activity. The purposes of this study were to determine the benefits of manufactured mangosteen peel extract toward increased neutrophil microbicidal activity and the most effective concentration in increasing neutrophil microbicidal activity exposed to S. mutans. Microbicidal activity of neutrophil cells was tested by firstly taking blood isolate neutrophils from peripheral veins of healthy people, secondly incubated with mangosteen peel extract, thirdly exposed to S. mutans, fourthly subcultured on a BHI-A medium, then incubated for 24 hours, and finally calculated the number of colonies by using colony counter. Results of the data were analyzed by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Levene, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney. The results showed each treatment group had significant difference with value of 0,001 (p<0,05). The treatment group incubated with the mangosteen peel extract had less number of colonies compared to the group which was not given mangosteen peel extract. In conclusion, the mangosteen peel extract could increase neutrophils microbicidal activity that was exposed to S. mutans.. Abstract

Background: The prevalence of periodontal disease in Indonesia is 60%. Chronic periodontitis is one of periodontal disease which affects Indonesian. The primary cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque. Adhesions and accumulation of bacterial plaque can cause inflammation and destruction of periodontal tissue following by increasing of gingival crevicular fluid flows and releasing of its components, one of the components is phosphorus that excreted from sulcular epithelium. Soluble phosphorus along blood stream is from gingival crevicular fluid which the flow is increased and excreted by sulcular epithelium. Objective: To know phosphorus levels in the gingival sulcus of chronic periodontitis. Methods: The subjects of the study were patients who came to the Dental Hospital University of Jember and occupied as inclusion and exclusion criteria. The subjects who had inclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups based intra-oral examination; gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. Gingival crevicular fluid sampling was taken from tooth with gingivitis or chronic periodontitis using paperpoint. Phosphorus level measurement used UV-Vis Spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 883 nm. The results were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test. Results: There were phosphorus in the gingival crevicular fluid of chronic periodontitis and it higher than gingivitis. Conclusion: There is phosphorus level in the gingival crevicular fluid in patients with chronic periodontitis.   Keywords: Chronic periodontitis, gingival crevicular fluid, phosphorus

Abstract

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a gram-negative obligate anaerobic bacterium that is most dominantly found in the oral cavity and plays an important role in periodontitis pathology. Periodontitis can be prevented by controlling plaque, namely, brushing teeth. Therefore, toothpaste needs to be optimized by adding an antibacterial substance. The robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) contains caffeine, phenols, trigonelline, chlorogenic acid, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids, which have proven to be antibacterial. This study aimed to assess the ability of toothpaste containing robusta coffee bean extract to inhibit the growth of F. nucleatum. Robusta coffee beans were extracted using the maceration method and formulated into toothpaste with concentrations of 12.5%, 25%, and 50%. Antibacterial tests were carried out by the well diffusion method on MHA media that had been inoculated with F. nucleatum and the measured the diameter of the inhibition zone. The result showed that there was a significant difference in the inhibition zone diameter between the group positive control, the negative control, and toothpaste containing robusta coffee bean extract 12.5%, 25%, and 50%. The largest inhibition zone formed consecutively was in toothpaste containing robusta coffee bean extract 50%, 25%, and 12,5%. It can be concluded that toothpaste containing robusta coffee bean extract with concentrations of 12.5%, 25%, and 50% can inhibit the growth of F. nucleatum.
