Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities have the right to receive health education to gain knowledge and effect positive changes toward a healthier lifestyle. The research intends to assess the impact of animated video-based counseling on the awareness of dental and oral hygiene among children with intellectual disabilities attending the Special Elementary School (SDLB) Negeri Bekasi Jaya in South Bekasi City. The study conducted in January and February 2023 utilized a pre-experimental design that followed a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The research was conducted between January and February 2023, using a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test methodology. Technical terms are clarified upon their first mention, and any biased or emotional language has been omitted to maintain impartial clarity. The research concentrated on pupils with intellectual disabilities at SDLB Negeri Bekasi Jaya, situated in South Bekasi City. A purposive random sampling method was used to select a sample of 38 individuals who met the inclusion criteria of being cooperative children with IQ scores ranging from 60-to 85. The sample received a single treatment without any control. The study's results indicate that the mean pre-test score was 2.55, whereas the mean post-test score was 11.32. Analytical testing, using the Wilcoxon test, demonstrates a statistically significant result (P < 0.05), indicating a significant impact of counseling sessions through animated video media on children with intellectual disabilities' levels of knowledge. As a result, the study's findings strongly support animated graphics as an effective teaching tool for children with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

The prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia is estimated to be 80%. In children aged between six and 11 years, dental caries is a chronic condition that is prevalent and relatively high. Nevertheless, some measures can be taken, such as the application of topical fluoride. Nevertheless, a considerable number of parents remain unaware of the topical application of fluoride. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of an educational animation on parental knowledge about topical fluoride applications. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group, pretest-post-test design. The population of this study consisted of all parents (mothers and guardians) of students at DTA Al-Fath, totalling 18 individuals. The sampling method employed was total sampling. The data were analysed using the paired sample t-test. The results of the paired sample t-test indicate that the average level of parental knowledge regarding topical fluoride applications prior to the implementation of the educational intervention was 45.83. Following the provision of instruction via the medium of animation, the level of parental awareness regarding topical applications of fluoride increased, with an average score of 86.67. The findings of this study indicate a significant impact on the level of parental awareness regarding topical fluoride applications in DTA Al-Fath, both before and after the implementation of an educational intervention utilising animated media. The statistical significance of this impact is evidenced by a p-value of 0.000, which is less than 0.05

Abstract

Introduction: Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH) is an enamel defect with white, yellow or black colour due to minerals insufficient during tooth development. The abnormality of prismatic enamel structures and tooth hypersensitivity on patients with MIH may disturb the success rate of restoration. The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of MIH in primary school children. Methods: A cross-sectional study with purposive sampling on 619 primary school children at Pasteur Urban Village of Bandung City, Indonesia. All dentition were scored using the European Association of Paediatric Dentist (EAPD) MIH scoring sheet, and oral hygiene status assessment with simplified OHI. All data were descriptively described using distribution table. Results: Distribution of MIH on total of 619 children were scored as follows: 0,1,1a, 2, 2a, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10 (0 = free enamel defect; 6, 7, and 8 = alteration to non MIH; 1 -5 and 9 -10 = MIH) with frequencies 417(67.36%), 39(6.30%), 60(.65%), 13(2.10%), 0(0.00%), 7(1.13%), 0(0.00%), 4(0.65%), 0(0.00%), 26(4.20%), 58(9.36%), 0(0.00%), and 49(7.91%) respectively. Conclusion: Prevalence of children with MIH in primary school is quite high (19% (118 out of 619 participants)). The highest prevalence is found at the 11 years old group with 49 participants (36.84%), while the prevalence in boys (83 (62.4%)) is found to be higher than girls (50 (37.59%)).Keywords: Prevalence, Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH), primary school children
