Abstract

Background: Foreign language instruction in Indonesia remains teacher-centered with minimal technology use. Digital tools like Blooket now offer educators opportunities to boost student engagement and vocabulary acquisition through gamification. Objective: This study examines the impact of language teachers in improving students' vocabulary mastery through Blooket. Methods: A retrospective qualitative approach was employed, focusing on 15 language teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Imogiri. The research highlights the effectiveness of gamification strategies in vocabulary instruction. The researcher employed a case study methodology, utilizing qualitative research techniques and questionnaire design for this study. In this study, 15 participants, who were language teachers with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in English and German at SMA Negeri 1 Imogiri, were specifically asked questions about vocabulary instruction. Findings: Findings indicate that a combination of gamified learning and varied teaching methods significantly enhances students' vocabulary acquisition. Students will acquire new words more successfully if the teacher integrates interactive and contextualized learning experiences, such as game-based learning, real-world applications, and multimodal instruction. Conclusion: This study contributes to the existing literature by emphasizing the role of teachers in integrating gamification to foster vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The study aims at developing a valid and reliable test to measure students' Englishpronunciation mastery. To meet the objective, two kinds of instruments were developed, namely recognition and production tests. The instruments were tried out to students fromthree pronunciation classes, and the results were then analyzed through validity andreliability tests and an item analysis. Statistical analyses showed that the instruments wereunsatisfactory and needed revisions. After some revisions and try-outs, the revisedinstruments proved to be valid and reliable with reliability coefficients of 0.940 for theproduction test and 0.889 for the recognition test, and difficulty indices of 0.538(moderate) and 0.546 (moderate) respectively. Keywords: pronunciation, validity, reliability, difficulty indices

Abstract

Translanguaging (TL) has been recognized for its potential to enhance students’ understanding and participation in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom, particularly in speaking, reading, writing, and listening. This is especially relevant for vocational high school students in rural settings, where limited English proficiency and resource constraints present challenges. TL allows students to engage more actively by flexibly using their native language alongside English. However, its effectiveness depends on various contextual factors, including teachers’ implementation strategies and students’ language proficiency. This case study investigates how teachers and students perceive the effectiveness of TL in supporting comprehension within the context of English for specific purposes (ESP) in a rural school setting. The data were collected through teacher interviews, student focus group discussions, and classroom observations. Findings indicate positive perceptions of TL from both teachers and students, with teachers using it strategically to explain complex ideas and foster language skills. However, its effectiveness varies based on language familiarity, with a noted preference for mixing English with Bahasa Indonesia over Javanese. Despite TL's benefits in building confidence and comprehension, challenges such as balancing native languages with English, managing limited vocabulary, and ensuring consistent practice remain. Overall, while TL strategies could enhance comprehension and confidence in speaking English, the success depends on strategic implementation and alignment with students' proficiency levels. Future studies could explore the efficacy of TL in improving students’ comprehension across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perception of junior high school English teachers towards the implementation of blended learning in Yogyakarta and to determine the frequency of its implementation. Data were collected through questionnaires from 84 junior high school English teachers using purposive sampling techniques. The research instrument uses a 5-point Likert scale to measure seven dimensions: knowledge and understanding, ICT competence, frequency of implementation, perceived effectiveness, perceived benefits, perceived challenges, and institutional support. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. The results showed that teachers' perceptions of blended learning were positive overall, with the highest score on the perceived effectiveness dimension (M = 16.50; SD = 2.42). However, the frequency of implementation remains low (M = 10.61; SD = 2.14). Analysis based on demographic variables showed that only training experience had a significant effect on teacher perception (p = 0.006). There is a gap between positive perception and practical implementation, highlighting the need for infrastructure support, intensive training, and policies to support the implementation of blended learning in English language teaching.

Abstract

This paper began with concerns about the lacks of sharp rhetorical styles in writing, the methods of citing references, and the formulations of theories and arguments within the conceptual framework in thesis reports written by students of the English Language Education Department. The study was carried out to explain the rhetorical styles of students’ theoretical framework in their thesis report, to reveal weaknesses or the lack of strong arguments in conveying ideas in a straightforward and structured manner, and to suggest actions to prevent the problem form reoccurring in the future. The data were collected from the final project manuscripts written by students of the English Education Study Program, totaling 110 works. The analysis followed the stages of data collection, data display, data reduction and drawing conclusions. The general results of the research showed that the students did not include too many elements of critical thinking in their thesis literature review. In general, they used attribution quite excessively (78%), followed by elements of establishing links between sources (15%), and comparing their own findings or interpretations with other sources 4%. Meanwhile, the elements of application, evaluation, and statement of use had the smallest portion, each 1%. Problems found in the sample were listed based on the comparison between the data and the standard commonly used to regulate the procedure of writing a scientific paper. Recommendations were then formulated which can be used as guidelines for final project writers or any other parties related to writing scientific papers in general; they are training students of the importance of using all rhetorical styles in their citation when preparing a strong conceptual framework.
