Abstract

ABSTRACT Forest and peatland fires in the tropics occur on a large scale and cause environmental damage in the lungs of the world. The flames on the burning peat mix with water vapor inside the peat and produce a lot of smoke. The carbon which was previously buried in the soil and stored in stands above it became exposed and united in the life and human environment. It is very important to know the total carbon stocks in peat to see its contribution as carbon sequestration and carbon storage in stabilizing the ecosystem for rehabilitating peatlands in the tropics which are the lungs of the world. This research is limited to the estimation of carbon stocks stored in peat and understorey soil at the rehabilitation site of the Orang Kayo Hitam forest park. The estimation of soil carbon stocks is carried out by measuring the depth of peat at 48 drill points that are systematically placed. The estimation of understorey carbon stocks is carried out by destructive sampling method on a 0,5 x 0,5 meter plot which is repeated 3 times. The results showed that the peat depth varied from 7,2 - > 10 meters. The mean of understorey carbon stocks is 7.74 tons/ha while the mean of soil carbon stocks is 33.183,67 tons/ha.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries that has a large enough forest in the world. However, the size of the forest area is not in line with the concept of sustainable forest management. The rate of deforestation in Indonesia inside and outside forest areas from 2015 to 2019 reached 56,865.3 ha/year. This condition results in erratic climate change. One of the forest areas in Indonesia that contributes to these conditions is the Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin Forest Park. The condition of this area experienced a decline in both quality and quantity, especially in 2015. This conservation area had experienced a forest fire disaster that year. Therefore, at this time the condition of burned area is in a period of succession. However, this succession process does not appear to be managed properly. This can be monitored from the emergence of acacia (Acacia mangium) which is quite a lot in the burned area. Even though this location is endemic to iron wood tree (Eusideroxylon zwgeri). One very important way to improve this condition is to emphasize community participation around the forest park itself. This participation can be in the context of safeguarding, securing, preserving, and developing a long-term management plan for the forest park. One of the community participatory concepts that can be applied in conservation forest areas, is edu-ecotourism nature-based tourism. The community services activity has been carried out well for outreach activities as well as focused group discussions/FGDs. For outreach activities, the results showed that there was an increase in public understanding and knowledge about edu-ecotourism-based nature tourism. Then for the FGD activities, it was found that the community supports ecotourism activities that will be carried out, with the hope that the community can be directly involved in the ecotourism activities. The community also expects direct guidance and direction from the Batanghari Regency Environmental Service.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Sunlight plays a crucial role in the process of photosynthesis because it provides the energy source that plants need. The intensity of light received by plants greatly affects their growth and the efficiency of photosynthesis. The rate of photosynthesis in plants is also greatly influenced by the intensity of sunlight, where if there is sufficient light intensity, adequate amounts of water and carbon dioxide, and appropriate temperatures, photosynthesis will usually reach its peak. The purpose of this research is to observe the rate of photosynthesis in Tanjung (Mimusops elengi Linn.) and Merbau darat (Intsia palembanica) plants with various treatments such as the addition of topsoil, subsoil, rice husk charcoal, cocopeat, sand, cow dung fertilizer, and NPK fertilizer using a plant photosynthesis meter. The research was conducted at the Educational Forest and Nursery Laboratory of the Forestry Department, Faculty of Agiculture, Jambi University. The results of this study indicate that Tanjung with the treatment of topsoil, rice husk charcoal, and 5 g of NPK is the best fertilizer application, as evidenced by the highest photosynthesis rate of 31.7 µmolCO2 m-2s-1. Meanwhile, for the merbau darat seedlings, the treatment with topsoil, sand, and 2 g of NPK fertilizer yielded the highest results for the photosynthesis rate.

Abstract

The presence of weeds in oil palm plantations can reduce fresh fruit bunch production by up to 80%. The applied weed control techniques affect subsequent weed composition. The purpose of this study was to assess the weed composition in oil palm plantations before and after mechanical and chemical weed control. The study was conducted on immature oil palm plantations (TBM) covering an area of approximately 1 ha. Weed vegetation analysis used the quadrat method with a sample plot size of 20 m2 and a sub-sample plot size of 1 m2. The number of sample plots was 9 with 18 sub-sample plots each in the dead stile and disc. The variables observed consisted of the number of weed species, the summed dominance ratio (SDR), and the level of weed distribution. The results showed a shift in the number of weed species before and after mechanical control in the dead stile and chemical control in the disc. There were 34 weed species in the dead stile before cutting and 30 weed species after cutting, while in the disc there were 15 weed species before herbicide application and 10 weed species after herbicide application. There was no shift in weed species with high SDR before and after cutting in the dead stile, while there was a shift in weed species before and after herbicide application in the disc. Weed species with high distribution levels in the dead stile were the same before and after cutting, while in the disc there was a shift in weed species before and after herbicide application. The weed vegetation community was relatively homogeneous before and after cutting and herbicide application.
