Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the immunity and quality of life of the elderly in Badean Village, Banyuwangi, through the implementation of healthy lifestyle practices utilizing local food ingredients. The program's background is rooted in the increasing elderly population, who tend to experience a decline in immunity (immunosenescence) and quality of life, necessitating comprehensive health interventions. The methodology employed is a community-based participatory approach, actively involving the elderly, their families, health cadres, and community leaders. Key program activities include balanced nutrition education, practical training on processing local food ingredients, promotion of adaptive physical activities, and capacity building for health cadres as health facilitators. The program results demonstrate a significant positive impact. There was an increase in the elderly's knowledge about healthy lifestyles and nutrition from 55% to 73%. Behavioral observations indicated an increase in the consumption of local vegetables and fruits (70%) and regular participation in physical activities (60%). The utilization of local food ingredients for daily diets also notably increased. Qualitatively, the elderly reported an improvement in their physical (more energetic) and psychological (happier) quality of life, as well as a decrease in the frequency of minor health complaints. This program successfully demonstrated that community-based interventions optimizing local food resources are an effective and sustainable strategy for improving the health and well-being of the elderly, while simultaneously empowering the community.

Abstract

Abstract—Overweight is a condition of excessive fat accumulation that results in excess body weight, which can affect health. Overweight in adolescents is a major health problem in society in both developed and developing countries. The prevalence of overweight in East Java reached 11.3%, higher than the national data of 8%. The effects of overweight include obesity, chronic diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and others. This research method uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach with a control group design, which is divided into three groups: the control group, treatment group 1 (P1), and treatment group 2 (P2). The sampling technique used was total sampling with 30 samples. Body weight was measured before and after treatment in all groups. The treatment groups received 150 ml of Katuk and tomato juice in ratios P1 (0.5:0.75) and P2 (1:1.5) for 14 days. The statistical test results showed that the body weight of the treatment group (P1 = 0.019) and (P2 = 0.000), while the body fat percentage (P1 = 0.005) and (P2 = 0.000), which means there is an effect. Giving katuk and tomato leaf juice effectively reduces body weight and fat percentage. Treatment group 2 (P2) as the most effective dose in reducing body weight and body fat percentage in overweight students at MAN 1 Banyuwangi. Keywords: overweight, katuk leaves, tomato Abstrak—Overweight merupakan kondisi penimbunan lemak berlebih yang menyebabkan kelebihan berat badan yang menganggu kesehatan. Overweight pada remaja menjadi permasalahan kesehatan yang besar di masyarakat baik di negara maju maupun negara berkembang. Prevalensi kejadian overweight di Jawa Timur mencapai 11,3% lebih tinggi daripada data nasional sebesar 8%. Dampak overweight yaitu menyebabkan obesitas, penyakit kronis, diabetes melitus tipe 2, dan lain-lain. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan quasi experiment dengan pretest-posttest with control group design yang terbagi menjadi tiga kelompok, yaitu kelompok kontrol, kelompok perlakuan 1 (P1) dan kelompok perlakuan 2 (P2). Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik total sampling dengan 30 sampel. Semua kelompok diukur berat badan dan persen lemak tubuh sebelum dan setelah diberi perlakuan. Kelompok perlakuan diberikan 150 ml sari katuk dan tomat dengan ratio P1 (0,5:0,75) sedangkan P2 (1:1,5) selama 14 hari. Hasil uji statistik diketahui berat badan kelompok perlakuan (P1 = 0,019) dan (P2 = 0,000) sedangkan persen lemak tubuh (P1 = 0,005) dan (P2 = 0,000) yang berarti terdapat pengaruh. Pemberian sari katuk dan tomat efektif dalam menurunkan berat badan dan persen lemak tubuh. Kelompok perlakuan 2 (P2) menjadi dosis paling efektif dalam menurunkan berat badan dan persen lemak tubuh pada siswi overweight di MAN 1 Banyuwangi. Kata kunci: overweight, katuk, tomat

Abstract

Background: Direct height measurement is often difficult in immobilized patients. Knee height measurement becomes an alternative, thus encouraging the development of an electronic knee height measuring device (EKHMD). Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the EKHMD in estimating knee height, height, and nutritional status. Methods:  This study used a quantitative approach with 30 healthy adults (15 men, 15 women) through purposive sampling. Anthropometric measurements used the EKHMD and a microtoise as standards. Validity was assessed using Pearson or Spearman correlation tests, agreement or accuracy using Bland–Altman plot analysis, and reliability using Cronbach-Alpha. Results: The results of the validity test showed that knee height measurements (r = 0.929), estimated height (r = 0.863 (sitting), r = 0.869 (lying down), and nutritional status (r = 0.952 (sitting), r = 0.970 (lying down) with significance for all variables (p = 0.00) which means that EKHMD correlated strongly with microtoise measurements (p < 0.05). Accuracy analysis using Bland–Altman measurements was in the range of Upper LoA and Lower LoA knee height (2.13 – (-1.43 cm)), estimated height (7.89 – (-9.05) cm (sitting) 0.049 (-0.029) cm (lying down)), and nutritional status (2.35 – (-2.01) (sitting), 0.06 – (-0.023) (lying down)) and Cronbach’s Alpha showed high reliability (p > 0.60), knee height (p=0.61), estimated height ((p=0.936 (Sitting), p=0.928 (Lying)), and nutritional status (p=0.983 (Sitting), p=0.984 (Lying)). Conclusion: Thus, EKHMD can be considered as a tool to measure estimated height and nutritional status but still needs to be developed further.

Abstract

Members of the basketball club lacked an understanding of body composition and its relationship to sports performance. They had never undergone an objective body composition assessment. Their knowledge of sports nutrition, particularly the role of carbohydrates and the concept of carbohydrate loading, remained limited. The purpose of this activity was to conduct body composition assessments using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), accompanied by counseling and a simple introduction to the concept of carbohydrate loading. The activity was implemented through sports nutrition counseling and body composition measurements using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-tests. The target group was 19 students participating in the basketball club. The community service program resulted in 73.7% of participants with good nutritional status, 26.5% body fat percentage, and an average BMR of 1252 kcal. Participants' test scores increased from 66.4 to 75.7 at the post-test. Therefore, the implementation of carbohydrate loading, supported by anthropometric and body composition data, can assist athletes in developing more effective nutritional strategies tailored to individual needs, to optimally support training and competition.
