Abstract

This study investigates the patterns and functions of code-switching (CS) employed by English teachers in an Indonesian preschool setting. In the complex linguistic landscape of Bengkulu, where students navigate multiple local dialects alongside the national language, code-switching serves as a vital pedagogical bridge. The present study is a qualitative case study conducted at TK Essential Education Bengkulu during the 2025/2026 academic year. It was designed to explore how teachers utilize tag-switching, inter-sentential, and intra-sentential switching to maximize a restricted 30-minute instructional window for students with zero prior English exposure. The results revealed that: (1) code-switching is a deliberate scaffolding tool that ensures comprehension and maintains emotional security; (2) inter-sentential switching dominates classroom management, while intra-sentential switching is primarily used for vocabulary building; and (3) the integration of local codes (Melayu Bengkulu, Serawai, Rejang) prevents "subtractive multilingualism" and fosters a culturally responsive learning environment. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the strategic use of L1 (First Language) and regional codes accelerates the transition from receptive to productive language skills in early childhood education.

Abstract

Abstract The Revised Bloom's Taxonomy provides a framework for evaluating cognitive levels in learning materials, and achieving a balanced distribution of lower- and higher-order thinking skills in textbooks is essential to fulfilling the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study aims to analyze the cognitive levels of reading comprehension questions in Interactive English 2 for Junior High School, Merdeka Curriculum edition, based on the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. Using a qualitative descriptive design with document analysis, 114 reading comprehension questions across 10 chapters were examined and classified into six cognitive domains: Remembering (CI), Understanding (C2), Applying (C3), Analyzing (C4), Evaluating (C5), and Creating (C6). The analysis revealed that lower-order thinking skills dominated, with Remembering (62.28%) and Understanding (18.42%) comprising the majority, while higher-order thinking skills such as Analyzing (7.02%), Evaluating (6.14%), and Creating (3.51%) were underrepresented. These findings indicate that the textbook emphasizes factual recall and basic comprehension over critical, analytical, and creative thinking. which is inconsistent with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, it is recommended that future textbook development ensure a more balanced distribution of cognitive levels to better support students' higher-order thinking skills. Abstract

Writing paragraphs in English is a fundamental academic skill, yet many students still encounter various difficulties, particularly in the digital era where technology influences writing practices. This study aimed to identify the barriers faced by fifth-semester students in paragraph writing and examine the factors influencing their writing, including the role of digital technology. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants were fifth-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed that students experienced linguistic, cognitive, technical, and technological barriers. Linguistic barriers were the most dominant, particularly in vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Other difficulties included cohesion, mechanics, organization, and coherence. In addition, digital technology acted as both a supporting and influencing factor. While digital tools helped students correct errors and generate ideas, excessive reliance on these tools reduced students’ confidence and independent writing ability. In conclusion, vocabulary and grammar limitations remain the primary barriers, and digital technology significantly influences students’ paragraph writing both positively and negatively. Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine students' perceptions of the role of poetry in learning English pronunciation. This study used a quantitative descriptive method involving students of the English Language Education Study Program at the Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu as research participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 20 statements using a five-point Likert scale. The data obtained were then analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques in the form of average values (means) and percentages. The results showed that students had a positive perception of the use of poetry in learning English pronunciation with an overall average value of 3.77, which is included in the high category. Poetry is considered an effective learning medium because it can help students improve segmental aspects such as vowels and consonants as well as suprasegmental aspects including word stress, rhythm, and intonation. In addition, the use of poetry also has a positive impact on students' affective factors by increasing self-confidence and motivation and reducing anxiety in learning English pronunciation. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that poetry has an important role in supporting the development of students' English pronunciation skills and can be used as an alternative learning medium in EFL classes.
