Abstract

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is a highly anticipated sequel in James Cameron's groundbreaking franchise, promising a deeper exploration of environmental themes intertwined with indigenous cultures. This study employs eco-critical analysis, augmented by AI insights, to investigate into the intricate connections between environmentalism and Islamic perspectives within the narrative. By examining the movie's portrayal of nature, spirituality, and socio-political dynamics, this study aims to uncover underlying themes that resonate with Islamic environmental ethics. Through the lens of AI-assisted analysis, the researchers unveil nuanced layers of interpretation, shedding light on the movie's potential to inspire meaningful dialogue on environmental stewardship and cultural sustainability. The researchers examine the symbiotic ecology and its hypothetical biology, which is proposed to be "better" than the metal-based technology used by the 'invading' humanity. It challenges the idealized notion of nature as a collection of native animals, plants, and people. Lastly, this study explores the different anthropocentric themes that the movie explores, criticizes the Na'vi's subtly "humanistic" domination over other fauna, and explores the prospects of embracing a truly impartial perspective to capture the realities of oppressed not humans.

Abstract

This study analyzes the English research article written by Korean authors as one fruitful genre of academic discourse. It highlights how the discourse elements reflect Korean academic writing culture. This study employed a qualitative method with genre-based discourse analysis. The researchers chose one qualified research article on ELT written by Korean authors from a reputable journal. The article was analyzed in two layers: generic structure and rhetorical structure. The results showed that the writing of the Korean article uses the IMRaD as the international standard of research reports. The results also suggest that Korean academic writing places a strong emphasis on empirical evidence and formal language to ensure clarity, objectivity, and professionalism. Understanding these generic and rhetorical structures is essential for both writers and readers in the academic community, as it provides insight into how knowledge is communicated and legitimized in Korean education.

Abstract

Literature education is essential for enhancing students’ language competence, critical thinking, and engagement with literary texts. This study explores the implementation of a virtual drama project in literature classes for English Education students at IAIN Palopo, examining their responses, benefits, and challenges. Employing a descriptive-quantitative approach with qualitative elements, data were collected from 100 students across six classes through a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyze the findings. Results indicate that 72% of students viewed the virtual drama project as an engaging and effective learning tool, reporting improved language competence, pronunciation, confidence, and higher-order thinking skills. Additionally, 15% highlighted personal growth, citing increased self-confidence and creativity. However, 29% faced acting difficulties, struggling with emotional expression and performance adaptation in a virtual format. Technical barriers, such as poor internet connectivity (5%) and device limitations (2%), also hindered some students’ experiences. Despite these challenges, the study underscores virtual drama’s potential as an innovative pedagogical approach in literature education. Educators can enhance the effectiveness of virtual drama projects by integrating acting workshops, technological support, and stronger links to literary analysis. These findings contribute to the evolving landscape of digital literature education, offering insights for future curriculum design and pedagogical innovation in language learning.

Abstract

Integrating local culture into language material leads to improving the students’ reading skills. Conducted in South Sulawesi's Luwu Regency, the research employs the ADDIE model for development and assessment. Participants included five English teachers and 25 eighth-grade students from (Junior High School) SMP Negeri 4 Belopa. During the analysis phase, teacher interviews and student questionnaires revealed a strong demand for culturally relevant materials, with 92% of students and 100% of teachers expressing a need for Luwu-based content. Subsequently, the design phase involved selecting texts reflective of local culture, guided by the needs analysis. The development phase produced an initial draft of a reading book comprising four chapters: "Heroes of Luwu," "Folklores of Luwu," "Enchantment of Luwu Tourism Objects," and "Traditional Foods of Luwu." Expert evaluations rated the content and language quality as 'good' with an average score of 83.75. Based on expert feedback, the draft underwent revisions. In the implementation phase, the revised reading materials were introduced in English classes at SMP Negeri 4 Belopa. Teachers rated the materials' effectiveness with an average score of 3.64 (agree), while student feedback was highly positive at 3.96 (strongly agree) on a 4-point scale, indicating the materials' practicality in an educational setting. The final evaluation phase involved refining the book based on teacher and student feedback, culminating in the dissemination of the final draft to several junior high schools within Luwu Regency. This study underscores the positive impact of culturally tailored educational materials on student engagement and skill development in language learning.
