Abstract

Politeness involves using the pragmatic approach that is most appropriate and specific to a given situation. Additionally, politeness is essential in making conversation, especially in the scope of the school, which builds the character of learners in the association. Furthermore, the textbook is an essential instrument for the teacher as an instructor to manage to convey the material in the classroom. The analysis of negative politeness strategies in English textbooks provides valuable insights into how these strategies help students understand approaches that avoid force or interrupt others' space, thereby fostering respect and minimizing potential threats to one's self-esteem or social status. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the use of negative politeness strategies in an English textbook entitled “English for Nusantara”.  This study carried out a qualitative method with content analysis. Content analysis provided deep insight into how these strategies were implemented and how they influenced students' understanding of respectful and inclusive communication through English textbooks. The findings showed that three sub-strategies were realized in the book. They are questioning and hedging, giving deference, and apologizing. The dominant sub-strategy was found giving deference. The implication of giving deference, particularly through honorific expressions, suggests a strategy where speakers employ respectful language or titles when referring to the person they are addressing. Additionally, Questioning and hedging involved making requests a politely and using language that softens the impact of statements, indicating a degree of uncertainty or politeness. Meanwhile, apologizing plays a significant role in maintaining harmony and repairing relationships when misunderstanding occurs.

Abstract

The study employed a descriptive methodology with a cultural perspective, with a key focus on dissecting the novel Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia by Jean Sasson published in 1993 to explore the impact of popular culture on the identity of Saudi women, focusing on the princesses within the royal palace. The cultural environment of Saudi Arabia presents a complex scenario for women as they reconcile traditional Islamic values with pervasive Westernized influences. This inquiry scrutinized how popular culture, introduced through migration and media exposure, molded Saudi womens attitudes and actions, particularly those of the royal lineage. This novel is the source of data for the research. The analysis focused on themes, representations, and cultural significance. It examined language, imagery, and narratives to uncover meanings and relate them to broader societal issues, ultimately revealing how popular culture reflects or challenges prevailing ideologies. The findings revealed Sultanas struggle to balance her Saudi princess identity with Western influences, revealing the complexities of cultural exchange, marriage practices, and societal expectations in both Western and Islamic contexts. Sassons narrative highlights how global influences, particularly Western culture, shape perceptions and interactions, enriching yet complicating societal norms. Vivid depictions of gender roles, sensory experiences, and emotional responses underline the ongoing struggles women face in patriarchal societies. These stories provide an understanding of the intersections of culture, gender, and identity, reflecting personal journeys while echoing broader themes of empowerment, resistance, and evolving cultural identities in a globalized world.

Abstract

Superintelligence plays an important role in the development of discourse about posthumanism. In this context, the researcher discussed posthumanism studies in the movie M3GAN (2022). The study focused on the moral status of artificial intelligence embodied robotic prototypes created by humans, namely M3GAN. In other words, how can the protocol system be implemented on M3GAN? Does M3GAN possess moral status regarding suffering, pain, autonomy, interactivity, and adaptivity? How did the humans reveal and interact with this technology in the posthumanism era as depicted in the movie? This article used the posthumanism theory from Robert Pepperell to analyze and answer the research questions. The study used descriptive qualitative data from the dialogue scenes and visual screenshots to represent the analysis results. The results of this research show that artificial intelligence in the form of the M3GAN prototype has moral status, such as autonomy, interactivity, and suffering. It becomes a dystopian reality for the robotic creator. Furthermore, the ethics of artificial intelligence or superintelligence must be unveiled wisely in the implementation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a correlation between the critical thinking skills of students and the level of reading comprehension that they demonstrate. To examine this relationship, the researchers employed a reading comprehension test adapted from the TOEFL proficiency framework alongside a critical thinking assessment. The data were evaluated using Pearson's Product-Moment Correlation, which demonstrated that there is a relationship between the two variables that is statistically significant. The results demonstrated a strong positive correlation between students’ levels of critical thinking and their reading comprehension scores. Moreover, students with high critical thinking abilities had significantly enhanced performance on the reading comprehension assessment relative to their peers with low critical thinking capabilities. These findings suggest that critical thinking plays a crucial role in the process of understanding written texts and may have meaningful implications for students’ academic development, particularly in the context of language learning.

Abstract

This study explores the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe through an ecocritical lens, using Greg Garrard’s theoretical framework. Employing a qualitative method, the research focuses on two major themes from Garrard's ecocriticism: wilderness and dwelling. The analysis examines ecological values conveyed through character interactions, symbolism, and narrative structure. The findings reveal that nature in the novel functions as a setting and a moral agent capable of influencing human behavior and values. Human actions depicted through the Pevensie siblings and their interactions with the natural world directly impact the ecological balance within the story. This study contributes to ecocritical scholarship by foregrounding the active role of nature in a literary work often overlooked in environmental studies. It highlights children’s fantasy literature as a valuable medium for promoting ecological awareness and ethical reflection on human-nature interdependence.

Abstract

This study investigates the balance between naturalness and accuracy in the Indonesian fan-sub of Kung Fu Panda 4. It examines the subtitling strategies employed by fan translators, utilizing Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling strategies and Larson’s (1984) principles of translation quality. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed 139 lines from the movie, focusing on their cultural and linguistic complexity. The findings reveal that paraphrasing was the most frequently applied strategy (63.31%), followed by transfer (15.11%), expansion (9.35%), condensation (7.91%), and imitation (4.32%). These strategies enabled fan translators to adapt the source text while preserving its meaning, ensuring the subtitles were culturally and linguistically suitable for the Indonesian audience. Most subtitles were rated as moderately natural (79.86%) and moderately accurate (50.36%), with a smaller portion achieving high ratings. The study underscores the need to enhance naturalness and accuracy while emphasizing the importance of incorporating subtitling strategies in translation education to address real-world challenges.

Abstract

This research examines the dynamics of power struggle through digital communication in the novel Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon using the Foucauldian discourse analysis approach. This study has three main objectives: first, to analyze the representation of digital communication in the story; second, to examine the construction of power struggle through digital communication in the story; and third, to explore the implications of power struggle in human relations in the digital era as depicted in the novel. The study focuses on how digital communication functions as a medium of power relations, especially in the context of the main character, Madeline Whittier, who relies on digital platforms to interact with the outside world due to her isolation. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, based on Michel Foucault's theory of power, knowledge, and discourse. The results of the analysis show that digital communication in Everything, Everything not only facilitates interpersonal relationships, but also becomes an instrument of domination as well as resistance. This study highlights how digital technology mediates emotions, decision- making, and shapes power structures in contemporary society. Through a Foucauldian discourse approach, this study contributes to literary studies and digital communication theory, and bridges the gap between classical discourse analysis and modern technological realities. In addition, the findings offer practical insights for educators, parents, and policy makers in understanding the complexity of digital interactions among teenagers.

Abstract

This research examines the representation and ideological construction of “Color Blindness” in the film The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The purpose of this study is to answer three main questions: (a) how colorblindness is portrayed in story; (b) How is colorblind community constructed in the story; and (c) How does colorblind community socially construct a power relation in the story. The findings of the analysis demonstrate that The Blind Side not only tells an inspiring story of Michael Oher’s life change but also represents the narrative’s dominance from a white perspective and the inclination to simplify the complexities of racial relations. The portrayal of the Tuohy family as white saviors, as well as Michael Oher being held in stereotypes, subtly emphasizes racial hierarchy. In addition, the movie contains forms of prejudice camouflaged in positive tales, which overlook the context of systemic injustice.  This study adds to media studies by demonstrating how colorblind ideology in popular media may be a tool of symbolic domination, masking issues of racism and socioeconomic inequality. It emphasizes the importance of critical readings of media representations to understand their influence on social constructions of race, power, and identity.
