Abstract

A case study focused on the agroindustry of Baun smoked pork in the District of Amarasi Barat Regency of Kupang has been conducted from September to October 2016. The aims of the study were: (1) to assess consumer perceptions about the peculiarities of Baun smoked pork; (2) to identify the efforts made by the producer in maintaining the customers; (3) to analyze factors that influence consumer demand, and (4) to analyze the extent of the production response to the demand of smoked pork. Ninety consumer respondents were included in this study following a simple random sampling procedure during 30 days of interviewed (3 respondents/day). The data obtained were descriptively analyzed for both qualitative and quantitative. Cobb-Douglas function was used to analyse the correlation and regression for quantitative data. The results showed that Baun smoked pork had a distinctive taste, with simple way of serving and on time. It also had available lesehan dining facilities. Factors that have a significant effect on the demand of smoked pork were the income and the number of family member. Furthermore, the production of smoked pork is influenced by consumer’s demand and day of production. The smoked pork production did not corresponding with the consumer demand, where the total demand of 2,624 kg per month. Therefore, producers should have the right strategy to maintain their potential consumers through the efforts of increasing the number of pig slaughtered especially at the week end. ABSTRAK Penelitian bertujuan untuk: (1) mengetahui persepsi konsumen tentang kekhasan produk se’i babi Baun; (2) mengidentifikasi upaya produsen dalam mempertahankan pelanggan; (3) menganalisis faktor yang mempengaruhi permintaan konsumen; (4) menganalisis sejauh mana respons produksi terhadap permintaan se’i babi. Pengambilan contoh konsumen sebanyak 90 orang dilakukan secara acak sederhana dengan teknik pengambilan tiga orang per hari selama 30 hari. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Analisis kuantitatif berupa analisis korelasi dan regresi dengan pendekatan fungsi Cobb-Douglas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa se’i babi Baun memiliki rasa yang khas, cara penyajiannya sederhana dan tepat waktu serta tersedia fasilitas makan lesehan. Faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh nyata terhadap jumlah permintaan se’i babi Baun yaitu pendapatan dan jumlah anggota keluarga. Selanjutnya, produksi se’i babi Baun dipengaruhi oleh permintaan konsumen dan hari produksi. Produksi belum merespon permintaan konsumen dimana jumlah permintaan sebanyak 2.624 kg per bulan belum dapat dipenuhi oleh produsen se’i babi. Oleh karena itu, produsen harus memiliki strategi yang tepat untuk mempertahankan konsumen potensialnya melalui upaya meningkatkan jumlah ternak babi yang dipotong khususnya pada akhir minggu.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the variability of quantitative and qualitative traits of kampong chickens in Kupang City and Kupang Regency. A total of 140 chickens consisting of 66 male kampong chickens and 74 female kampong chickens were used in this study. The method used was a direct observation survey on the quantitative and qualitative traits of kampong chickens. The association between sexes and quantitative traits was analyzed by t-test, while the qualitative data was analyzed by counting for the percentage. The diversity was determined by calculating the coefficient of variation (KK) of quantitative data. The results showed that male kampong chickens in Kupang City and Kupang Regency were dominated by 41.89% black feathered chickens, 37.88% yellow beak color, and 39.39% yellow shank color. Meanwhile, female kampong chickens were 43.94% red feathered, 53.05% black beak, and 50.00% black shanks. Black mottled feathers were found in male kampong chickens, whereas not found in female kampong chickens. Based on the quantitative characteristics, the wing length, tibia length, shank length, and the third finger length male kampong chicken were significantly higher than female kampong chicken (P≤0.05), while the shank circumference was not significantly different (P≥0.05). It can be concluded that kampong chickens in Kupang City and Kupang Regency was diverse based on quantitative traits.

Abstract

Pig farming has great potential for breeding in the city of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. The use of pigs as social livestock has led many people to raise pigs. In practice, farmers still rely on traditional habits inherited from their parents and experiences gained from the environment to raise pigs. Efforts are needed to address this. The adoption of innovations is a possible way to improve the productivity of the business, which will have an impact on its progress. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between farmer motivation and the adoption of pig farming innovations. The sample used in this study consisted of 100 pig farmers selected purposively from three districts in the city of Kupang. The analysis used in this study is Spearman's Rank Correlation analysis. The results of the research indicate that there is a very weak, significant, and positive relationship between economic motives and the adoption of innovations, with significance values of 0.019 (economic motives) and correlation coefficients of 0.023. Similarly, there is a very weak, significant, and positive relationship between the utilization of household food waste motive and the adoption of innovations, with a significance value of 0.027 and a correlation coefficient of 0.022. On the other hand, there is a very weak, significant, and negative relationship between socio-cultural motives and the adoption of innovations, with a significance value of 0.085 and a correlation coefficient of -0.019.

Abstract

The most popular business for the people of Kupang City is the pig farming business. In doing their business, farmers certainly have certain motivations. So far, motivation is often seen as one complete variable, even though in doing business farmers do not only look at one reason, but see multidimensionally from various dimensions. The dimensions in question are economic, socio-cultural and household food waste utilization motives. This study was aimed to evaluate and analyze the multidimensionality of priority motivations in pig farming and determine which motives are most prioritized by farmers in conducting a pig business in Kupang City. There were 20 pig farmers involved in this study selected using purposive sampling method located in three sub-districts in Kupang City. The variables measured were farmers’ motivations (economic motive, socio-cultural motive, and food waste utilization motive, farmer time and labor). Data analysis was conducted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results showed that socio-cultural motives had thehighest priority value (0.4032), followed by economic motives (0.3162) and household food utilization motives (0.2806).

Abstract

This study seeks to examinel the demand for pork and the various elements that impact meat demand. The process of determining samples invovels two stags. The initial step was purposelfuly selelcting the sample subdistricts. The second phase ilnvolveld sellelctilng a samplel of 90 consumelrs iln a non-proportilonal random melthod. Thel data was analyzeld iln a descriptive manner, incorporating both quantitative and qualiltative approaches. The method employed for analysis ils quantitative, utilizing correlation and regression analysis through the Cobb-Douglas rank function. This approach allows for a detailed examination of the data with a focus on relationships and trends. It's a powerful tool for drawing meaningful insilghts from the information at hand. The results of the correlation analysis show that there are five factors that have a strong relationship to the demand for pork (Y), namelly the price of chicken meat (X2), eggs (X4), incomel (X6), family responsibilities (X7) and education level (X8). The results of the regression analysis show that there are factors that influence the demand for pork in the city Kupang is Y=-12.561 X20,846 X4=1.146 X60,569 X70,104 X80,191. Factors that have a very real influence on the demand for fresh pork in Kupang City are the price of chicken meat (b2), the price of eggs (b4) and income (b6), with R2=63,7% Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memeriksa permintaan daging babi serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi permintaan daging babi. Contoh dipilih dalam dua tahap. Kelurahan contoh dipilih secara purposif pada tahap pertama. Kemudian, sembilan puluh konsumen contoh dipilih secara acak selcara non proporsional. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptilf, baik kualitatif maupun kuantitatif. Analisis kuantitatif menggunakan fungsi brpangkat Cobb-Douglas untuk menganalsis korelasi dan regresi. Hasil analisis korelasi menujukkan bahwa terdapat lima faktor yang memililki hubungan kuat terhadap permintaan daging babi (Y), yaitu harga daging ayam (X2), telur (X4), pendapatan (X6), tanggungan keluarga (X7), dan tingkat pendidikan (X8). Hasil analisis regresi menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap permintaan daging babildi Kota Kupang adalah Y=-12.561 X20,846 X4=1.146 X60,569 X70,104X80,191 faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh sangat nyata terhadap permintaan daging babi segar di Kota Kupang adalah harga daging ayam (b2), harga telur (b4), dan pendapatan (b6) dengan R2= 63,7%.

Abstract

Abstrak: Masalah yang dihadapi oleh peternak di Desa Ponain, Kecamatan Amarasi, Kabupaten Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) yaitu sulitnya memenuhi kesediaan pakan secara kesinambungan baik mutu mau jumlahnya. Hal ini karena harga pakan yang tinggi, sehingga peternak memberikan pakan seadahnya tanpa melihat kebutuhan harian ternak babi yang menyebabkan produktivitas ternak babi menurun dan membutuhkan waktu pemeliharaan yang lebih lama. Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan bahan lokal menjadi pakan alternatif dengan cara meningkatkan nilai gunanya dan pengurangi penggunaan pakan komersial sehingga lebih ekonomis serta meningkatkan softskill dan hardskill masyarakat dalam mengelolah pakan alternatif. Pelaksanaan PkM ini menggunakan metode ceramah dan eksperimen langsung bersama masyarakat. Masyarakat yang ikut dalam kegiatan ini adalah 25 orang dengan 19 laki-laki dan 6 orang perempuan. Evaluasi kegiatan ini dilihat dari adanya pre-test sebelum kegiatan dan post-test pada akhir kegiatan. Solusi yang di tawarkan yaitu pembuatan pakan alternatif menggunakan batang pisang yang difermentasi. Hal ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan dan mengoptimalkan kandungan nutrisi dan nilai guna batang pisang sehingga peternak dapat memenuhi kebutuhan nutrisi harian ternak babi serta dapat menekan biaya pakan. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini peternak dapat mengetahui pemanfaatkan pembuatan pakan alternatif guna menekan biaya produksi pakan yang mahal. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi melalui post-test dari 25 orang menunjukan hasil 80% responden mengalami peningkatan pengetahuan tentang fermentasi batang pisang.Abstract: The problem faced by breeders in Ponain Village, Amarasi District, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is the difficulty of meeting feed supplies in a sustainable manner, both in quality and quantity. This is because the price of feed is high, so farmers provide as little feed as they can without considering the daily needs of pigs, which causes pig productivity to decrease and requires longer maintenance time. This Community Service (PKM) aims to utilize local ingredients into alternative feed by increasing its useful value and reducing the use of commercial feed so that it is more economical and improves the community's soft skills and hard skills in managing alternative feed. The implementation of PkM uses lecture methods and direct experiments with the community. There were 25 people who took part in this activity, 19 men and 6 women. Evaluation of this activity is seen from the pre-test before the activity and post-test at the end of the activity. The solution offered is making alternative feed using fermented banana stems. This aims to increase and optimize the nutritional content and use value of banana stems so that farmers can meet the daily nutritional needs of pigs and can reduce feed costs. Through this service activity, breeders can learn about the use of alternative feed production to reduce expensive feed production costs. Based on the results of evaluation via post-test from 25 people, the results showed that 90% of respondents had increased knowledge about banana stem fermentation.

Abstract

Ponain Village is located in Amarasi District, Kupang Regency, where most of the residents work as free-range chicken farmers and general farmers. However, agricultural by-products such as rotten tomatoes and chilies have not been optimally utilized. These by-products can serve as a medium for cultivating Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots (Hermetia illucens). This community service program was conducted using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, which involves active participation from specific groups. The process consisted of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The implementation phase included socialization and training on BSF maggot cultivation. The evaluation was carried out through pre-tests and post-tests. A total of 30 participants attended the program, including members of Karang Taruna (youth organization), church youth, and farmers from Ponain Village. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge about BSF maggots, rising from 13.33% to 96.67%. Additionally, awareness of the potential use of agricultural by-products for BSF maggot cultivation increased from 26.67% to 83.33%. In conclusion, this community service activity successfully enabled Karang Taruna, church youth, and farmers in Ponain Village to utilize agricultural by-products for BSF maggot cultivation. Moreover, it significantly improved participants' knowledge of optimizing these resources for sustainable farming practices.Desa Ponain merupakan desa yang terletak di Kecamatan Amarasi, Kabupaten Kupang yang mana sebagian besar masyarakatnya berprofesi sebagai petani sayuran dan peternak ayam kampung.  Hasil sampingan dari pertanian adalah limbah tomat dan cabai yang tidak layak dijual dan masih belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Limbah sayuran tersebut dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai media untuk budidaya maggot Black Soldier Fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens). Metode pendekatan pada kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menggunakan pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR). PAR merupakan metode yang dilakukan dengan melibatkan partisipasi kelompok tertentu, dengan tiga tahapan yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Kegiatan pelaksanaan meliputi penyuluhan dan pelatihan budidaya maggot BSF. Evaluasi yang digunakan yaitu pre-test dan post-test. Kegiatan ini dihadiri sebanyak 30 peserta yang terdiri dari Karang Taruna, Pemuda-Pemudi Gereja dan Petani Desa Ponain. Hasil dari pengabdian ini yaitu adanya peningkatan pengetahuan mengenai maggot BSF dari 13,33% menjadi 96,67%, serta adanya peningkatan pengetahuan peserta mengenai bahwa limbah pertanian dapat digunakan sebagai budidaya maggot BSF dari 26,67% menjadi 83,33%. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa Karang Taruna, Pemuda-Pemudi Gereja dan Petani Desa Ponain mampu memanfaatkan limbah pertanian untuk budidaya maggot BSF, serta meningkatnya pengetahuan peserta dalam memanfaatkan limbah pertanian untuk budidaya maggot secara maksimal.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify various internal and external factors and determine the appropriate strategy for the development of beef cattle in Kupang District. This study employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches, with respondents selected through purposive sampling. The data collected were analyzed using SWOT analysis to identify Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) and External Factor Evaluation (EFE), and the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) to determine the primary strategic alternatives. The analysis results indicate that beef cattle farming in Kupang Regency has three strengths, three weaknesses, three opportunities, and four threats. Based on the SWOT analysis, the IFE value is 3,39 and the EFE value is 2,43 reflecting the potential for beef cattle development. The results of the QSMP analysis indicate that the recommended priority strategy is to diversify marketing channels and institutions by leveraging the strengths of farmers to address threats such as long marketing chains, inadequate infrastructure conditions, and price fluctuations through institutional strengthening and marketing chain efficiency. The conclusion of this study is that beef cattle farming in Kupang District is in a strong internal position to face external threats with the priority strategy of diversifying distribution and institutional structures.

Abstract

Oelomin Village is one of the areas facing stunting problems. This condition requires serious attention, considering the long-term impacts that can be caused on the growth and development of children. The purpose of this activity was to provide knowledge about the education of the egg-eating movement to prevent stunting in toddlers and pregnant women, as well as the utilization of yards as a green fodder source for daily nutritional needs. The implementation method includes the preparation stage, implementation (counseling and practice), and evaluation which was attended by 20 members of the Sejahtera social assistance group at the Oelomin Village Office. The evaluation of the activity was carried out by filling out a questionnaire before and after the activity. The activity results showed an increase in participant knowledge of 63.23% regarding the education of the egg-eating movement, making compost from kitchen waste and organic waste, and developing a living kitchen. It can be concluded that the activity had been carried out well. However, there needs to be support and participation from partners and ongoing active assistance regarding stunting awareness, so that it can reduce the problem of stunting and improve the quality of life in Oelomin Village

Abstract

The management of organic waste from the livestock sector is a significant challenge in achieving sustainable agricultural practices. The problem of poorly managed livestock waste can cause environmental pollution and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the Community Service (PkM) activity was carried out at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Marine and Fisheries, Nusa Cendana University, aiming to improve the understanding and skills of alumni and final year students of the Animal Husbandry Study Program in processing waste into quality bokashi fertiliser. This activity took place from 17 April to 14 May 2024, involving 23 participants, including lecturers and partners. The methods applied included distribution of extension materials, socialisation, bokashi processing training, as well as financial management and digital marketing training. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in partners' understanding of various aspects. The biggest improvement was recorded in the aspect of simple bookkeeping, with 65% of respondents feeling more able to record transactions systematically using spreadsheet software. In addition, understanding of bokashi fertiliser processing technology increased by 35%, packaging by 38%, and digital marketing by 50%. Overall, this activity succeeded in increasing the skills (soft skills and hard skills) of partners by 40%
