Abstract

In a literary work, two characters can be narrated as the attention center that contains the cultural identity from certain generation. Meanwhile, a symbol actually can cause an interaction within characters. This research discusses about cultural identity and symbolic interactionism reflected in a novel. There is a novel entitled “Recipe for a Perfect Wife” by Karma Brown that tells about two female characters that are represented as a housewife from different generation. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the research methodology and content analysis as the method in analyzing the object of the research, a novel entitled “Recipe for a Perfect Wife”. This research also uses the intrinsic approach to analyze the characterization, plot, and setting. This research reveals two kinds of a housewife. They are a housewife and working woman, and a full-housewife. This research finds five cultural identities in the past and present time that is related with a housewife reflected by two female characters in the novel by using cultural identity theory by Stuart Hall. This research also reveals the symbol and memory even three concepts of symbolic interactionism that is mind, self, and society based on symbolic interactionism theory by George Herbert Mead.

Abstract

The increasing demand for graduates who are able to communicate effectively in English across different professional domains highlights the need for continuous curriculum evaluation and learning material development. This research is related to the learning outcomes of graduates that have been determined in the English Diploma 3 Program curriculum, especially in the special skills points regarding to oral communication skills in the office, tourism and mass media sectors. In the researcher's understanding, the learning outcomes of graduates must be achieved through various efforts; one of which is the preparation of appropriate learning materials for courses related to communication, one of which is Public Speaking. To be able to compile the learning material in question, complete and precise research has been carried out. Based on this, the appropriate research to be carried out is development research because this research puts ideas into practice as an effort to increase knowledge regarding, for example, curriculum and teaching and learning; then the idea was developed to become a standard model. The results obtained from this research are an increase in what happens in the classroom and understanding of the basis of educational practices implemented. This research also presents ideas about learning materials for Public Speaking courses for students in the English Diploma 3 study program. The expected research results are a more complete set of learning plans and textbooks or modules according to the subjects that are the material of this research.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh pemahaman yang mendalam tentang pembelajaran menulis eksposisi bahasa Inggris melalui strategi Think Quest Project yang berlangsung di SMA Labschool Jakarta. Penelitian ini mencakup bahasan yang terkait dengan aspek – aspek penting dalam melangsungkan pembelajaran menulis eksposisi bahasa Inggris melalui strategi Think Quest Project yang terdiri dari: tujuan pembelajaran, materi pembelajaran, metode pembelajaran, media pembelajaran, system penilaian dan tema budaya yang terbentuk. Kata kunci: Think Quest, Eksposisi, strategi pembelajaran.

Abstract

Previous studies on The King of Staten Island (2020) have largely focused on themes of masculinity, adulthood, or autobiographical elements of the filmmaker, while psychological analyses of grief in the film remain limited and theoretically underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining Scott Carlin’s grieving process through Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s Five Stages of Grief, while critically acknowledging contemporary perspectives that conceptualize grief as non-linear and cyclical. Employing qualitative narrative analysis, this research integrates an intrinsic approach, focusing on characterization, plot development, and setting, with an extrinsic psychological framework to interpret Scott’s emotional responses to loss. Data were collected through systematic note-taking, in which selected dialogues, actions, and key scenes were categorized based on explicit emotional indicators corresponding to denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The findings demonstrate that Scott experiences all five stages in a non-linear pattern, with denial and anger recurring most prominently, while acceptance emerges gradually through relational transformation rather than emotional resolution. This study contributes to psychological film analysis by demonstrating how Kübler-Ross’s model can be applied flexibly rather than sequentially, thereby reflecting the complexity of grief representation in contemporary cinema. Practically, the findings highlight the potential of movie scripts as a medium for fostering emotional awareness and understanding of unresolved grief, particularly among young adults.

Abstract

Kegiatan Kegiatan Pengabdian pada Masayarakat atau Abdimas dalam artikel ini bermula dari permasalahan tidak terselenggaranya Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak pengajian di masjid Al Basyariah, Bekasi. Hal ini disampaikan oleh Ketua Dewan Kemakmuran Masjid atau DKM di awal kegiatan. Terkait permasalahan tersebut, pelaksana kegiatan Abdimas menetapkan topik kegiatan Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dengan metode bercerita. Metode bercerita adalah pengajaran Bahasa Inggris yang menggunakan cerita pendek berbahasa Inggris untuk praktek mendengarkan, menulis, dan berbicara. Topik ini dipilih dikarenakan pembelajaran dengan metode bercerita belum pernah dilakukan dan kegiatan bercerita merupakan salah satu kegiatan yang menarik. Topik ini juga penting untuk dilaksanakan karena metode ini dapat mengurangi kebosanan yang dialami anak-anak karena sebelumnya mereka juga telah belajar dengan metode yang berbeda. Selanjutnya, metode pelaksanaan kegiatan Abdimas ini meliputi tahapan penyusunan materi ajar, pembelajaran, evaluasi, dan penetapan kesimpulan kegiatan guna pelaporan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa proses pembelajaran telah terlaksana sebanyak 14 pertemuan. Materi ajar dapat terserap namun setiap unit membutuhkan eksplorasi kegiatan. Selain itu, terdapat peningkatan minat dari peserta yang tadinya hanya berjumlah 7 menjadi 10 peserta. Pihak DKM juga menyatakan kepuasannya atas pelaksanaan kegiatan. Akhirnya, penyelenggara dan pihak mitra meyakini perntingnya kegiatan ini dilaksanakan lagi secara berkala dengan materi dan metode yang lebih bervariasi.
