Abstract

Language as part of our culture refers to both general and specific aspects. Specifically, a language has a distinctive aspect that makes it different from other languages. One of the distinguishing aspects can be seen from the greeting or register in terms of kinship. The term kinship in the discipline of linguistics falls into the scope of sociolinguistics. The term kinship according to Wardaugh (2009) is a characteristic in a language that is generally found in every language. The term kinship is being used to address or refer to other people in relation to ourselves (ego) in a structural system that is connected by blood relations, descent, or the occurrence of marriage. The Chinese Benteng community in Tangerang uses a different and distinctive kinship term compared to the Chinese community in other cities in Indonesia. In general the Benteng Chinese community no longer uses their original language as a whole, but speaks Indonesian with a mix of surrounding languages, namely Sundanese and Javanese. The language of their ancestors is still found used by the older generation, trading activities, traditional rituals, and kinship. In addition to the aspect of language use, other forms of cultural acculturation also can be seen such as in dance, musical instruments, and culinary arts. In general, it can be said, China Benteng has a peculiarity that is still upholding the culture of the ancestors but also absorbs the surrounding culture well. This study aims to describe the terms in the Chinese Benteng kinship system, namely through the classification of kinship terms (Chaer, 1997) and analysis of the language distribution of kinship terms. This study was structured using a qualitative descriptive approach. The interview method was used in extracting information from informants, besides that note-taking techniques were also used to document data mining. The results of the analysis show that the terms of kinship in the Cina Benteng community are grouped into three, namely the terms of direct kinship, indirect kinship, and due to marital relations. The distribution of forming languages or used in Chinese Benteng kinship terms are Chinese, Sundanese, and Javanese.

Abstract

Through the study of Virtual Linguistic Landscape (LLV), this descriptive qualitative research aims to explore the contestation of Indonesian language in a virtual multilingual space with Indonesian people as the majority, namely the r/Indonesia subreddit community, within a social media site dominated by English speakers, Reddit. Each of the top-down contents made by the community moderators and bottom-ups made by the community members is observed. The analysis consists of the identification of the language dominance as well as the informational and symbolic functions behind the use of the languages in both types of content to further elaborate the significance of the dynamic. The research found that although members of the community are mostly Indonesian, English dominates all top-down contents. This domination functions informationally as a form of language accommodation while symbolically signifying that positive attitude is more assigned to English than Indonesian language as a status symbol. However, both English and Indonesian language dominate various different bottom-up contents. While the use of both languages also functions informationally as a form of language accommodation, the symbolic functions are more significant. That is, English as a marker of competence within the space designed for niche discussions and Indonesian language as a form of closeness and solidarity among members. Additionally, the use of English in the semi-formal bottom-up content indicates an influence of language choice by the top-down contents.

Abstract

President has an authority to establish policies in order to run the government, one of which is through Keputusan Presiden Republik Indonesia (Indonesian Presidential Decree). As written documents, the Decrees have language development which can be seen from the writing patterns. Therefore, this study aims to examine the writing patterns of Decrees from time to time to support forensic linguistic study, such as document forgery analysis. We took sixteen Presidential Decrees from 1945 to 2018 as the data then analyzed them by using qualitative method. The data were obtained from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia and the official website of the Cabinet Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia (www.sipuu.setkab.go.id). This study indicates that language development in Indonesian Presidential Decrees is found in the structure of the Decrees, diction, and sentence structure. On the Decree structure, 1945 and 1946 Decrees contain one long sentence to explain the intent, whereas in the 1947—2018 Decrees, intents are elaborated in several clauses. Additionally, there are various types of diction used in the consideration sections. On the syntax, various types of sentences can be found in the Decrees. 1940s Decrees contain simple sentences and complex sentences while 1950s—2010s Decrees contain simple sentences, complex sentences, compound sentences, and mixed sentences.

Abstract

Written languages are present in various media in public landscapes, such as notice boards, banners, or bumper stickers. Studying these simple signs is the starting point in observing how a language variety exists and interacts with other languages. It is interesting to study how the instances of written texts found in public landscapes can be an indicator of what language variety is actually used by the inhabitants of Depok. Based on its history and its geography, a hypothesis states that many speakers of Betawi language and Sundanese reside in Depok. The study is aimed at demonstrating the written language varieties found in Depok public landscapes based on written evidence which are compared with language varieties based on the regional variation (dialectology). This qualitative study used the sociogeolinguistic approach combining sociolinguistics, linguistic landscape, and dialectology (geolinguistics). The results show there are two language use distributions in Depok, the Sundanese and the Betawi language. From the landscapes, Betawi language is used in billboards, restaurant signboards, and local government banners. The study is useful for the local government in their efforts to confirm the identity of Depok people.
