Abstract

Social media nowadays presents a venue for speakers to convey messages in different languages. This study aims at identifying the factors of language shift in social media comments for bilingual, multimodal content posted on an Instagram account, called Folkatives. The analysis was based on two data types, namely verbal (English) and visual (Indonesia) data from the post and questionnaire data. They are analyzed with reference to Holmes’ (2001) theory on the factors of language shift. The results of this study indicate there are three factors of language shift in the two comments with the most likes in every six Folkative posts on April 30, 2022. Based on the analysis of the data (comments) and the results of the questionnaire on twelve Folkative followers, it was found that a language shift occurred due to social factors, the economy, and demography. his can be reviewed further because social media is a form of internet communication that continues to grow and will not die in the social world. Abstract

Song lyrics are literary works created by musicians to convey their ideas, feelings, and emotions. In making song lyrics, the writer is free to choose the words they will use to express their ideas or feelings and the meaning they want to convey. Generally, in making song lyrics, musicians use implied meanings so that the songs are more interesting to listen to. The phenomenon that often occurs is that there are still many people who misinterpret the meaning to be conveyed, especially the implied meaning (connotative meaning). Based on the phenomenon that often occurs, the purpose of this study is to find out the types of connotative meanings in song lyrics. The documentation method and note-taking technique were used in this study. The data source is taken from the song lyrics of Pamungkas' Flying Solo album. Abstract

This study examines the sociolinguistics of the language style used in the 2017 movie Darkest Hour, directed by Joe Wright and written by Anthony McCarten. The study focuses on two main research inquiries: (1) What language styles are utilised in the movie Darkest Hour (2) What variables influence the predominant language style utilised in the movie Darkest Hour. The study aims to identify and describe the language styles in the movie using Mandell and Kirszner's (2005) theory, which categorises language styles as frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. Furthermore, Holmes' (2013) theory is utilised to examine the aspects that impact the primary language style found in the movie. The study focuses on analysing characters' speech in Darkest Hour to reveal language patterns and analyse the sociolinguistic dynamics shown in the movie. This research delves into how language styles and contextual elements interact to enhance our understanding of how language is used for characterisation, narrative development, and historical representation in movie discourse.

Abstract

Collocations, or word co-occurrences, are typically studied based on written corpus data. In this paper, we used preliminary experimental data to explore the inherent association between a verb and certain nouns. We hypothesized that specific verbs would vary with respect to the nouns the verbs are associated with. To test this hypothesis, we developed an experiment using the Gorilla Experiment Builder to simulate the preference selection of nouns with each verb. The research was done with a sample size of 17 participants and each of them performed 35 trials inside the Gorilla software. The responses were compiled into a set of tables as the basis for generating bar plots, showing the frequency of nouns selected with each verb. The overall results show that the studied verbs have certain preferences towards specific nouns. Even though this research found initial support for the hypothesis, the findings are not conclusive due to the small sample size of participants, being far from the population size initially measured. We discuss a way to corroborate the findings using different methods.

Abstract

Feminist existentialism highlights the struggles women face in societies that impose restrictions based on gender and societal expectations. This study aimed to explore how the movie Hidden Figures portrays feminist existentialism ideology through the experiences and resistance of its main characters. Using a qualitative research method, the study examined the duality of the sexes and the various forms of women’s resistance as depicted in the film. Data collection was carried out through documentation and note-taking techniques. The analysis employed Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist existentialism framework as its primary theoretical foundation to examine how the movie Hidden Figures represents gender duality and feminist existentialism through the resistance of its main female characters, focusing on the identification of gender duality, the evaluation of acts of resistance, and the contextualization of these themes within the discourse of feminist existentialism. The findings reveal that Hidden Figures present a clear depiction of gender duality, where women are marginalized in workplaces, education, and social spaces. Despite these limitations, the main characters resist societal restrictions by asserting themselves in professional fields, intellectual discourse, and social transformation, aligning with the feminist existentialism concept of transcendence. Through their struggles, the film challenged traditional gender norms and contributes meaningfully to discussions on gender equality.

This research analyses the types of code mixing and the context of the situation from the code mixing used in the conversation. The study applies the theory of code mixing by Muysken and the context of the situation by Halliday and Hassan. The data sources are the selected sentences, phrases, and clauses from a video titled JEN “IRFAN LAGI TIDAK BERKERJA! JADI SEKARANG SAYA YANG KERJA!” on Melaney Ricardo's YouTube Channel that were analysed with qualitative data analysis. The result shows that three types of code mixing were found in the content. Abstract

Negation is an essential aspect of communication. In English, one common morphological strategy to express negation is by attaching negative prefixes to base forms. This study analyses the morphological structure of words containing negative prefixes found in the Wrecker novel (Hiaasen 2023), based on the framework proposed by Plag (2023). In the novel, we identified a total of 89 unique words containing negative prefixes; words with the prefix un- is the most prevalent. The classification of these words reveals two distinct structural patterns (that are represented as tree diagram). The first pattern consists of a root word combined with a negative prefix, negating its meaning without altering its grammatical category. The second pattern involves more complex words, where two to three morphemes are used along with a suffix, modifying both the meaning and the word class. The findings contributed to enhance understanding of morphological patterns in literary texts, encouraging future studies to broaden the scope by analyzing additional works across various genres and authors to determine whether similar structures might persist or vary in different contexts.

Abstract

AntConc is an open-source corpus linguistic tool featuring basic corpus linguistic analytical techniques. A powerful element of AntConc is its various pattern-searching methods. This paper describes the flavours of AntConc’s searching methods and illustrates them for the query of phonological, morphological, and syntactic phenomena. The more advanced searching method, namely Regular Expressions (RegEx), is also discussed. The paper illustrates the use of RegEx for querying a rather complex morphological phenomenon in Indonesian, namely reduplication. RegEx search output is compared with the output from the basic Wildcard search feature to accentuate the sophistication and flexibility of RegEx for more targeted and specific results. The paper, overall, underscores the importance of mastering the different methods of querying texts with different complexities in AntConc for investigating a wider range of data-intensive, linguistic inquiries.

Abstract

The Balinese language is the mother tongue that is used by the people who live in Bali for daily communication and social interaction. Currently, the Balinese language just like many other mother tongue languages in Indonesia is in the process of being abandoned by the younger generation for many reasons for instance it is because there are limited resources available on the Internet.  Semantic ontology has been chosen as the backbone of this system due to minimising the ambiguity of the translation using the keyword-based query.  The development utilises the prototyping system development approach by focusing on the involvement of the user at every stage of development.  The system has three main features namely semantic browsing, semantic searching, and antonym searching.  We carried out two types of evaluation (functional and non-functional) by involving 30 participants and the results show users perceive the usefulness and ease of use to be positive
