Abstract

The inclusion of ethnomathematical perspectives into the mathematics education of indigenous student is often described as being beneficial. Drawing on weaving activities from West Amarasi society in Timor Island, Indonesia, this paper examines the results from the exploration of mathematical concepts that exist and are practiced in this society. This is a descriptive exploratory with ethnographic qualitative approach research. Data were collected in March 2022 through observations, interviews, and documentation. Some indigenous people from Merbaun Village, West Timor, in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, were participants in this research. The results showed that there were several ethnomathematics characteristics in the weaving activities of the West Amarasi society: counting, locating, measuring, designing, explaining, the use of implication logic, and estimating. It was also found mathematics concepts and ways of thinking such as the concept of multiplication as repeated addition, parallel of straight lines, geometric shapes, reflection, rotation, sizes and units, and logical implication. This finding can be used as a source of mathematics learning by teachers, researchers or mathematics education practitioners not only those local in West Amarasi but also in other similar places around the world.

Abstract

The challenges of 21st-century learning lead the Indonesian government to make innovations in the education world, one of which is in the learning assessment system. The policy of abolishing the UN and USBN and then proceeding with the implementation of the National Assessment has been carried out since 2020. This is a good policy but teachers and principals' understanding of an assessment system like this still requires assistance. For this reason, this Community Service (PkM) activity was carried out. The PkM team from the Mathematics Education Study Program, Nusa Cendana University collaborated with the Astra Education Foundation – Michael D. Ruslim (YPA-MDR) and four Astra-assisted elementary schools in Takari, NTT, so that there were four principals and thirty-nine teachers who were actively involved in this activity. The Lecture method, question-and-answer, practices, and demonstrations were the methods used. This activity was carried out for three days and went through several stages: preparation, implementation, evaluation-reflection. The results show that this PkM activity has succeeded in achieving the set goals: 1) participants are able to develop Literacy and Numeracy tasks, 2) understand what school activities can be developed as part of implementing the Pancasila student profile and based on nine aspects of the Learning Environment Survey.

Abstract

Since the last six decades, linking mathematics and culture has been done. Experts believe that mathematics (whether published or not) was born and developed due to human activity. Therefore, building a mathematics learning environment in the classroom can be done by teachers based on daily activities including cultural activities, especially for students in remote areas. One of the local cultures that is the pride for the people of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia is woven fabrics. This is one of the cultural objects, where various philosophies of life that have existed since prehistoric times are embodied. Therefore, weaving, and woven fabrics can be used as a material for learning mathematics. Based on the results of mathematical and cultural studies on woven fabrics of the West Amarasi Society-a small village in East Nusa Tenggara, this paper discusses how to design a number pattern problem. This topic is often considered a difficult topic for local junior high schoolers because the context that is taught is barely visible in everyday life. Further how to implement the designed problem into classes is also discussed in this article

Abstract

In today's modern era, students are required to become learning centers. Thus, students must have prior experience and knowledge in order to be able to connect with the next concept (material). However, because the differences between the nature of elementary schooler and mathematics, teacher needs to structure learning that can be a bridge to neutralize these differences. One way to structure the learning is make a learning design such as Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT). HLT is an alleged learning process as an anticipation of things that might happen, both students' thinking processes and other things in the learning process. The term HLT refers to the teacher's lesson plan which is designed not only to consider the material, but also the level of understanding, knowledge and student characteristics of the material being studied, so that students experience the learning process from the beginning to achieving the expected mathematics learning goals for students. This article is a literature study that aims to discuss HLT in elementary mathematics learning.
