Abstract

Abstract

This report was created to provide a detailed understanding of the architectural internship program required by the Indonesian Association of Architects as the only architect association recognized by law. This program must be taken by prospective architects before submitting an architect registration certificate to be recognized as a professional architect. The purpose of submitting this report is also to correct the misunderstanding of the principles of a professional apprenticeship program which is generally equated with an interbship program conducted while studying architecture. This report explicitly shows that apprenticeship programs that are recognized as part of the process for submitting professional architects are apprenticeship programs for a minimum of two years which are followed after completing architectural education.

Abstract

This study investigates the embodied sensorial performance in material exhibition design as a way to enhance visitors’ experience about local cultures. Exhibitions and installations designed in museum or gallery context often incorporate a sensorial approach to increase engagement and to cater specific needs of society. This study takes particular interest in expanding such discussion, highlighting how a sensorial approach can be used in a more active way to experience localities, particularly in relation with food material. The study explores such sensorial aspects through reflecting towards an exhibition event conducted by the Indonesian Architect Association Central Java titled Rumarasa, an exhibition that explores the sensorial narrative of Indonesian spices. The exhibition consists of three particular stages that activate the overall senses that construct the experience of spices in Indonesia. The first stage consists of the visual stages of the spices, displaying the form and origin of spices in an interactive way. The next stage requires the visitors to touch the spices, inviting the visitors to experience the spice using their tactile, olfactory, and auditory senses. The third stage highlights how the spice can be used as a medium of creative play, transforming the spice as colouring material with different gradients. Through these stages, the sensorial journey constructs the overall local narrative of Indonesian spices, understanding the origin, building the intimacy, and enabling transformation of material. In conclusion, this study contributes to expanding the sensory experience as an approach to design cultural exhibitions, enabling an active and deep experience of locality.

Abstract

Abstract: Life's demands continue together with deteriorating natural conditions cause the community adjust its "space" which is exacerbated by the low economic conditions that occur in Morosari Demak Village.  Several public facilities in Morosari such as schools and health centers were available even though the conditions were not feasible. The study of this facility considered important regarding Morosari known as a marine tourism village, but in reality the village's maritime potential has not been well managed. This village has a funeral of an Islamic religious leader who is located in the middle of the waters that used to be land.  This is what drives the need for public facilities which can accommodate the needs of the community and visitors who make pilgrimages in Morosari Village as an aspect to support the needs and survival of the Morosari Village community where pilgrimage tourism can be one of the village's income sources. The method used is qualitative which uses field conditions (natural) as data then explores through various observations such as data collection, photographing, interviewing and observing.  The purpose of this study is to find out the most important facility needs to begin the design of the development of the Morosari village area. From this research, it was concluded that the first public facility needs developed by the Morosari Village community were focused on the problems of road infrastructure.  Then being followed by the needs of other public facilities such as schools, health facilities that are supported by a good drainage system and distribution of clean water, Morosari Village will become a good marine tourism village.

Abstract

This article analyzes the role of langgar in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta during the period of village development from 1773 to 1930. The three periods are when Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta first appeared, the second is during the batik industry period, and the third is during the birth of community organizations in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta, namely Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah. Langgar is a space for religious and social activities in Muslim-populated villages in Java, Indonesia. This study aims to explain the role of the seven langgars that still exist today in the socio-cultural life of Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta, related to local values, public space, and social roles. This research uses a qualitative method with the Grounded Theory method. This research explains that langgar in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta is not only present as a place of worship but also as a role of a node for the development of village settlements and community social spaces. The output of this article is expected to be the basis for a research framework that needs to be developed to study the role of the langgar and the sustainability of settlements in Kampung Kauman Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Energy consumption has become a major concern within academic communities, affecting everyone from undergraduate students to senior professors. In response, architectural schools in Indonesia have begun incorporating energy efficiency education into the curriculum for first-year students across various courses. One of the newest mandatory courses at the university is the Internet of Things (IoT). In the architecture department, this course not only covers the fundamentals of IoT but also emphasizes designing IoT solutions that support energy efficiency. This article describes the process by which architecture students integrate energy efficiency concepts into their IoT designs. A case study conducted during the Spring semester of 2025 in IoT classes for second-year students, using the updated teaching syllabus, highlights the positive outcomes. The results demonstrate that early-stage architectural education can significantly raise awareness of energy efficiency in both IoT and building design.

Abstract

This article examines a collaborative project that involves diverse actors in the co-creation of community-based design within an agricultural context. This study focuses on the implementation of the role-playing model as a practice that cultivates empathy, reflexivity, and collective agency among actors. The model is implemented through several methods, including collective reading of the context, dynamic role shifting, and the negotiation of architectural program. As part of community service, this seven-day program involved four groups, each consisting of four local students and two international students, four lecturers and design practitioners, and four household units, to participate in the role-playing and co-creation in designing for the community in Tajuk Village, Central Java, Indonesia. The exploration revealed that the co-creation process emphasizes the fluidity of roles, highlighting a dynamic decision-making process in which authority is distributed and continually reconfigured. Knowledge is co-produced through reciprocal engagement, enabling the integration of multiple perspectives into the design process. Furthermore, the role-playing model contributes to the broader discourse of participatory design study, offering a flexible and integrative framework that supports inclusive and sustainable community development by merging description, interpretation, and critical analysis by and for the community.

Abstract

This paper explores limited spatial conditions and access to water influence domestic arrangements in low-income urban kampong houses. It investigates water related needs to drive creative spatial strategies, including the appropriation of front house areas, shared courtyards, and semi public spaces that associate domestic service areas with the rear sections of dwellings. Water resources play a fundamental role in shaping domestic life and spatial practices in urban kampong environments. In Kampong Sekayu, Semarang, water is not only a vital element for everyday domestic service activities such as cooking, washing, and bathing but also a core determinant in the spatial organization of dwellings. The study also considers the impact of communal water use and neighborhood social structures on household spatial adaptations. By exploring how space is organized through the perspective of water-dependent household activities, this study highlights the unique spatial and social characteristics of urban kampong life, where water becomes a major organizing force in the everyday household landscape.
