Abstract

This study investigates the local wisdom within the Indonesian folklore Batu Menangis using the methods of coherence and cohesion. The narrative, originating from Kalimantan Barat, serves as a medium to explore traditional values such as filial piety, humility, and respect for one's origins. By analyzing its narrative structure, thematic connections, and linguistic features, the research highlights how coherence devices (e.g., repetition, conjunctions) and logical sequencing establish coherence within the text. This folklore is important to be analyzed because it is cultural context that carries local wisdom, moral education and gender values, social norms and intercultural meaning that are highly relevant to education, linguistics, literature and cultural studies today. The findings reveal that the story reflects cultural norms, moral lessons, and societal expectations, which symbolized through the transformation of the disobedient child into a crying stone. The study emphasizes the role of Batu Menangis in preserving Indonesia's cultural heritage and promoting educational values. Through a detailed examination of its local wisdom, the research underscores the importance of folklore as a vehicle for cultural transmission and moral education. This research highlights the discourse analysis and the importance of integrating folklore into educational contexts to strengthen character education and cultural literacy. By uncovering the local wisdom embedded in Batu Menangis, the study contributes to broader discussions on preserving intangible cultural heritage and utilizing traditional narratives as meaningful pedagogical resources in contemporary education

Abstract

This study aims to develop bilingual narrative writing materials based on local wisdom through the short story Antara Lepet dan Sura to enhance students’ writing proficiency, bilingual competence, and cultural awareness. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Dick and Carey instructional design model, which includes systematic stages of analysis, design, development, evaluation, and revision. The study was conducted at SMK Pancasila 1 Kutoarjo, involving 20 eleventh-grade students, two English teachers, and one lecturer as expert validators. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative analysis using Pearson Product-Moment correlation revealed that all instrument items were valid (r-count > 0.433), while reliability testing showed a high Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient (α = 0.905), indicating excellent internal consistency. Qualitative findings from expert validation and user responses indicated that the developed materials are pedagogically appropriate, culturally relevant, and effective in supporting bilingual narrative writing. The integration of Central Javanese local wisdom enhanced students’ motivation, creativity, and understanding of narrative structure, while also strengthening their cultural identity. The findings demonstrate that the developed materials are valid, reliable, and effective for classroom implementation. Therefore, the bilingual narrative writing module based on Antara Lepet dan Sura can be recommended as an innovative and contextually grounded instructional resource for vocational high school English learning, with strong potential for further development in digital and broader educational contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of a mobile learning application on the reading and writing skills of fifth-grade students in Purworejo Regency, Central Java.  Eighty students were divided into an experimental group using the LearnEnglish Kids: Playtime app and a control group using traditional methods. The data were collected through writing tests and questionnaires and anallyzed using Guttman scale Results showed significant improvement in the experimental group, with mean scores rising from 61.07 to 88.08 and 85% of students achieving an “Excellent” rating. The control group showed only modest gains, with mean scores increasing from 57.15 to 63.63. Tests for normality, homogeneity, and an independent sample t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (Sig. 0.000). Additionally, a questionnaire revealed that 71% of students agreed the app helped improve their language skills, and 96% felt it met their learning needs. These findings suggest that integrating mobile learning tools like LearnEnglish Kids: Playtime into the curriculum can significantly boost student performance and motivation. Future research should investigate the long-term effects of mobile learning on language skills and explore its applicability across different educational settings.
